you're the idiot here.  The number is actually legit for BOA - its a robo call to notify you that you have been sent a new card and to activate as soon as possible because your previous card will be deactivated soon.
Just because the # comes from NY doesn't mean that a local # isn't tied to a toll-free number for consumers to call in to.  So again, who's the moron now?

Not a Scam or IS IT?!?
    This is real simple folks,

Yes it is a LEGITIMATE number! I received a call informing me that they've sent a new card due to a merchant being compromised and to activate the new card ASAP. They DO NOT and SHOULD NOT ask for personal info...

However I could also call you and SPOOF Caller ID to show it to be BANK of AMERICA with the very same number! SCAMMERS use this technique daily to TRICK people into giving their address, SSN, bank account #'s etc...

HOW CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE? WHAT should you do?

Well, your bank is not going to CALL YOU and ask for this information.... if you are SMART you will CALL THEM using their KNOWN customer service numbers published on their website, statements or invoices.

** NEVER GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION to ANYBODY CALLING YOU! It's just creepy SCAMMERS trying to take advantage of the elderly and uninformed.....

This is a message to all of you good people: I think we can all agree that this is a world where things like identity theft and internet scams are prominent. Sentiments range from being overly cautious to naive. It is good to always verify and go straight to the source. No one should be shamed for being skeptical. Its alright to question things. It is true that not everything is a scam, but best practice is always to go to the source. I too went to the official  bank of america website and was led to this URL: https://www.bankofamerica.com/contactus/contactus.go. I didn't investigate further to see if the Syracuse number was listed somewhere. However, I don't need to. And neither does anyone else. It doesn't really matter if its a scam or not, if you simply follow best practice (go to the source). I wish all of you peace and happiness.

    Not A Scam For Me
Yesterday I received a text message (FREE TEXT: Bank of America ....) indicating a problem with my debit card and instructing me to call 1.877.248.6278.

Then received a call from  315-724-4022 (showed up as Utica, NY).  I didn't recognize the number so let it go to voice mail. The voice mail said they were from ATM data customer protection department at Bank of America....  They said there was unusual activity on my ATM debit card and asked me to call 1.877.248.6276....   (Note is it not quite the same number as specified by the text, but certainly might belong to the same block.)

I called the number on the back of my card and indeed there was an issue with my card. They were cancelling it and sending me a new one.  The lady said the text and the call I received were legit.

Further, I just stopped by my local BofA branch and spoke to someone there about this.  I showed him the call and text on my phone.  He said yes, the text and telephone call were legitimate, the numbers I was instructed to call belonged to their fraud department, and he offered to call them with me if I wanted. (He said he just went over this with another customer a couple of hours before I came in.)

By the way, he couldn't see the specific "unusual activity" that triggered this event, but again offered to call the fraud department who would have access to that information.

So I'm not sure why some people are apparently being told that this number is bogus (and of course in situations it can be spoofed so I always call the number on my card) but they did not require information from me and directed me to the fraud department.

NOT A SCAM. My debit card was used at a Speedway in Tinley Park, IL that has had multiple reports of phishing. BOA sent me a NEW ONE (which arrived last week before leaving on business) -- This call was to REMIND ME TO ACTIVATE THE CARD.

My card was copied. I live in SF Bay & my card was trying to be used in LA (with drawing cash of $400 twice). I just happen to be in RWC buying McDonalds for kids. B of A sent me a text Alert. My card has been replaced 3 times in the last year. The 1st was a test attempt try for $1. The 2nd was the Bank breach. The last.. In July they coughs something & I didn't ask. I can only say I think it IS A PLACE I GO.... Every Once in awhile. I can remember a guy standing behind me, & my thoughts where.. "I have my card, so weather  he sees my Pin,  I still have my card & he can't do anything with it,  without the card. I NEVER, ever thought of TEAM WORK w/ cashier. And I've only shopped there 3 times. I will check my statements to see if the problem occurred after each visit.

Now back to the number. YES. I've now received call 3 time from this number &  when I returned the call a prompt said
"if this is an operator and overseas calls we will except the call". As this point I  Believe it is B of A.  Could a thief be bold enough to except charges on a scam? Hell yeah !!!  all I can say is that B of a has been ON THE BALL and give them a call directly. I won't take the chance by being lazy. Hope this helps.
