    I LOVE IT!!!

My mother-in-law received a call from these [***] this morning.  'It's your grandson, Howie--I'm in trouble in Canada.'

Fortunately, she had seen a segment on this scam on the 'Today Show'--so she didn't fall for it.  But, when she called me, she was in tears--not sure that she'd done the right thing (what if it WAS Howie??)

This is what these THIEVES count on--the frailty of the elderly.  It makes me SO angry!!!

I recieved the same mystery shopper letter. At first i was excited thinking it was legit but i made a few calls to family because i was unsure it seemed to good to b true. so i looked up the website listed on the paper, the company was real, HOWEVER they did NOT have an office in the location on the paper. I began using my head and looked up the bank listed on check online an called the office an after giving the checks information i found that the account for the check was cancelled. I was so glad i didnt make any hasty judgements. I dont have that kind of money laying around to repay a bank.

My Grandmother received a call from these people and they told her that they were me and that they needed $1,500 because the got into a car accident in Toronto. It makes me so mad that there are people who care so little about how devastating such a call could pose to a Grandmother who cares about her Grandchildren.

    Fed up with scams
Someone needs to wire a couple of dollars to the Walmart, then have the police waiting to arrest them when they try to pick it up..  This same guy called my mother last month and said the exact same thing about being her grandson. He said he was in an accident in Canada and needed $4500 to be released.. My mother told the guy to call his aunt (me) because I would know what to do...  The idiot actually called me and said he was my nephew.. I dedected the accent after a few minutes.. He also sounded like he had a cold.  I had already decided that even if it was my nephew, he needed to spend at least at day or 2 in jail and think about what he did or what could have happened... DUI is a serious crime and no matter WHO it is, they should be punished.   This guy called back about 4 times before giving up, asking if I was going to send him the money.  He listened to my lecture on drunk driving as well..  I'm sure he deleted my number from his list..

My MIL received a call from this number from "Reader's Digest" saying she had won the third place prize of $250,000 in their sweepstakes. I contacted Reader's Digest, and they confirmed that it was a bogus call. The caller wanted her to verify (?) the check at Wal-mart, (not the bank, because they said the bank had ties to the government and it wouldn't be legal...) which would cost $1,500.

My 90 year old father received a call on 5-28-09. he is hard of hearing and thought it was his granddaughter.  He only heard what he thought was familiar with his grandaughters whereabouts.  Fortuneately, he told the girl to call back another time because he could not hear or understand her. She said she was in London and ran into some trouble and needed some money.  This is a very scary situation, especially with the older community, who are far more trusting.  Who should this be reported to?  Local police?

This number is a scam. My sister applied for a loan through Sterling Financial Services. I called the same 800 number to find out internet info. They called back on this number and they refused to give the information until I was accepted for the loan.

Received a call from someone saying he was my grandson and had been arrested with 2 of his buddies in Canada. They needed $3000 for bail. If he didn't get back today he would loose his job.  When I spoke with the police officer he said that I could wire the money from any Walmart store. I told him I could not send the money and he hung up.  After a call to the Toronto police we 'googled' the number and found that it was a scam.

I can confirm that they are still trying to scam people. My aunt got a call this morning from someone claiming to be me. The person said that I was in niagra falls and was in an accident and needed $2000 to pay off the deductible on the rental car I crashed. It was really weird bc they knew what I call my aunt, and that she could be reached @ my GP's house...

my story is exactly like one reported in these testimonials. a caller saying he was my grandson.that he was in canada. he had been to a concert, had a few drinks, had an accident with a rental car. lost his cell phone, please don't call my parents, i'll tell them when i get home. i need 3200.oo to pay the damages from the accident. almost the exact same story. fortunatly when we went to wal-mart to send the money they refused, saying there had been problems with a scam. we will be forever grateful to wal-mart for not sending the money.
