guy called my grandmother with the story of the car wreck and he needed 2900 dollars to pay for damages. She called me immediately and knew I was home. He said he was from Alberta a to moneygram the money to walmart. I filed a complaint with the FTC, and she has filed a police report. He used the same tactics, crying, urgency, can't come home to pressure her into the money. He knew some info on me which is scary as well. I am a lifelock member and notified them of the situation.

this number called my grandma and said it was her grandson and that he was in canada and got in an accident and needed 4000 dollars for the repair of the car that he hit. they added that he had a broken nose and jaw and that's why he sounded diffrent (which if you break your nose and your jaw i'm sure you won't be talking much) luckily my grandma wrote the name down wrong and the money didn't go through and i found this website before she could try again. the caller said not to call his parents and even knew my cousins name. total scam if they call back just say that you are the person they are claiming to be and they will hang up that's what i did.

I got a call on Jan 20th 2010 from this number. The caller said hi Mom, how are you? I said fine, but who are you? He replied,it's Dwight. I said my son's name is Dwight, but you're not my son. He hung up. When I told my son he googled the number and found this website. He then called me the next day and said the fraudulent number was a news item on T.V. and many others had received similar phone calls.

They struck again.  Today my Mother-in-law took a call he said he was her Grandson who had gotten arrested in Toronto after crying on the phone and giving her his sad story they handed the phone over to an officer.  The officer told her they needed $2700.00 wired to get him out of jail. They told her to wire the money - anyways Moms in her 80's and was having a difficult time trying to figure out how to wire the money. The fake officer called at least 3 times and kept dropping the amount of bail money.  When Mom and Dad finally told us what was going on we called the Toronto jail only to discover he was not there.  We cancelled Mom's credit card and notified the authorities.  By the way our son was in school attending his normal college classes when all this was going on totally unaware that someone was trying to get thousands of dollars from Grandma.  Makes you sick to know people like that are out there

Giving The Bounce To Counterfeit Check Scams
    http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/articles/naps29.pdf

NAPS)—A new scam is swindling consumers:checks that seem legitimate to both bank employees and consumers, but that are counterfeit and leave unsuspecting consumers footing the bill.
The Federal Trade Commission has a new brochure, “Giving the
    Bounce to Counterfeit Check
    Scams,” which explains common
angles used in these scams, the
    responsibilities of banks and consumers
    when it comes to counterfeit
checks, and advice on how to
    avoid them.
While the angles used by scam
artists may vary, the basics of the
    counterfeit check scam remain the
    same. The consumer receives a
    generous check with an explanation
that he or she has just won
an award, a prize, a lottery or
    some other windfall. The consumer
    is instructed to deposit the
check and wire a portion back to
pay fees, taxes or the like. The
    consumer deposits the check, the
bank credits the funds to the consumer’s
    account and the consumer
wires the money to the sender.
Some time later, both the bank
and the consumer learn the check
    was bogus.
    Unfortunately, the consumer is
out of luck: The money that was
wired can’t be retrieved and, by
    law, the consumer is responsible
    for the deposited check—even
though he or she didn’t know it
    was fake.
    The FTC advises consumers
not to rely on funds from checks
unless they know and trust the
person who gave them the check
or, better yet, until the bank confirms
    that the check has cleared.
    Other tips:
    • Throw away any offer that
asks you to pay for a prize or a
gift. If it’s free or a gift, you
    shouldn’t pay for it.

    • Resist the urge to enter foreign
lotteries. It’s illegal to play a
foreign lottery through the mail or
    the telephone, and most foreign
    lottery solicitations are phony.

    • Know who you’re dealing
with and never wire money to
    strangers.

    • If you’re selling something,
don’t accept a check for more than
the selling price, no matter how
tempting the offer or how convincing
the story. Ask the buyer to write
the check for the correct amount. If
the buyer refuses to send the correct
    amount, return the check.
    Don’t send the merchandise.

    • If you accept payment by
check, ask for a check drawn on a
local bank or a bank with a local
branch. That way, you can make a
personal visit to make sure the
    check is valid.

    • If the buyer insists that you
wire back funds, end the transaction
    immediately.

    • Resist any pressure to “act
now.” If the buyer’s offer is good
now, it should be good after the
    check clears.

To file a complaint and for more
    information, visit www.ftc.gov.

    Not your Grandma
On Friday, April 9, 2010, I got a call from a young man at the above number. "Hi Grandma. I don't know if you've heard about my little problem."  Then he goes on to say he was invited up to Canada with friends, had a little accident.  The problem was he had been drinking a few drinks.  I asked him his name, he said "Don't you know, I am (gave a first name).  Then I asked him what his wife's name was, it is very different.  He said nothing.  You know me, he said, I am (gave a full name).  I told him I didn't have a grandson by that name.  And as he started to hang up on me he called me a piece of s _ _ t.   I don't understand why this number, they are using, can't be blocked but then I guess they would just go to another number.  They are just too lazy to get out and work for a living so they prey on Sr. citizens.

My 72 year old mother received a call from the number 1 416 777 7775 with a woman pretending to be me stating that I had won tickets to a concert with a friend in Montreal.  She proceeded to claim that I had a few drinks, got in a car accident (saying I had stitches in my lip and my friend “Sally” was in a neckbrace) and now needed CDN$5000 to pay a lawyer who agreed to help get the car fixed and assist with the impaired driving charges.

A fake lawyer also came on the phone to claim that he was with my mother’s “daughter” and was going to help her.

My mother panicked and since she thought she was helping me she followed the man’s request of wiring $5000 via Western Union (plus $200 transaction fees).

When I didn’t call back, concern mounted and my parents called me to find out that I was not at all in Montreal and that my family had been scammed.

PLEASE report any incident to your local police as well as with the RCMP’s Anti Fraud Call Centre on http://www.phonebusters.com/english/index.html or by dialling toll free 1 888 495 8501 or overseas on +1 705 495 8501

We received a call from 416-777-7775 today.  They said this is your Grandson, and then started a
tale of being in trouble of Canada.  Before they got to asking for money, I started questioning them
and they said "oops" the connection is bad, and then hung up.  How do we stop thse people?

I received a frantic call from my grandmother making sure I was okay after she got a call from this same number. They gave her the same story as many above about a rental car wreck only they told her I was in Mexico. She asked them for a number that she could call them back on and they hung up. I understand cold reading to figure personal information out, but how did they get my first name and my Grandmothers name and number when we do not even have the same last name. Doea anyone have any other issues with identity theft after this occuring to them?

My grandma just got this call stating my brother was in trouble in Mexico and crashed his car. She said they knew his name, his sons name, and his son's mom's name. She was so frantic about it and thank the good Lord she doesn't own a credit card because she would have helped him right out! Make sure to spread this information to any and every elderly/non elderly person you know. When its about family, and your are older especially, it's easier for them to crack you! A**holes...

Just got a call from this number. The male voiced responded to my "hello" by simply stating my first name with a question. I said, "yes" and he continued to say, "This is Nick." At first I responded, "oh!", as I know a Nick, but realized it didn't sound like him. Thought it might be a different Nick and asked,  "Nick who?" The male voice then said, " can you hear me?"
"Yes, I can hear you. Nick who? I know more than one Nick and I don't recognize the area code."

"We have a bad connection. Let me try calling you again." He hung up and hasn't called back. Maybe he didn't think I had caller ID.

    Not HIS Grandma
Just received a call from a guy that also answered Hi Grandma (after a brief connection time)  He sounded like someone I know and since I got my first Granddaughter 7 weeks ago I thought he was for real.  I asked how he was and he stated that he wasn't doing very well, that he was in Canada..... I told him he had the wrong Grandma and hung up.  I can't believe this scam has been around as long as it has!
