I did not get to answer this call.  Recently, I started asking for the name of the company when I get unwanted calls.  Then I tell them that I'm sending the company an invoice for my time and the use of the private phone number for which I pay.  I really need to find out who is behind this phone number!!!!

My recommendation is to check out ALL charities/organizations on Charity Navigator (http://www.charitynavigator.org/). This wonderful site rates all organizations and provides details of where the money goes. After reviewing some of my regularly giving, I changed almost all of the organization I support! Fantastic tool and avoids getting scammed.

It's safe to assume all calls from "charities" are actually telemarketers, and that at least half (if not nearly all) the money you donate is going to the telemarketer.

As Molly points out, it's far better to pick your charities and donate directly to them. Use sites like Guidestar.org to vet them - they publish the charity's IRS 990 forms so you can see where their money is going. But as we've seen from the Wounded Warriors scam, the fraudulent ones are manipulating how they report fundraising and other expenses.

    Still at it!

Even if it were legit, would anyone want to go on a cruise out of Boston at this time of year?
(Re: cruise ship in the news recently that almost capsized in 30 foot winter storm waves!)

Same case as for Scott a few messages above. Kinda customer service, start from "Do you hear me OK" and then running their script. And also this is my business cell so I can't ignore unknown calls.
Interestingly enough, I use this number for 3 years, and for the first 2 years I didn't get a single spam call. Last year got maybe 5 in total, 3 of them hang-up on answer. This call is third for the year, so I see it as a proof that someone is doing a simple data mining job:
    1. probe all numbers, filter out disconnected and no response,
    2. enrich the data with each call (who answered, how long before hanged up)
    3. resell this data
    4. rinse, wipe, repeat, collect revenues, show profits, bring new investors, upgrade equipment, scale out.

    Lonh live free business!

I answered the phone before checking caller ID.  Mistake on my part!  Recording stated I won a free trip to the Bahamas.  I immediately hung up.

I have friends in my town police department. According to them, no police department, no police union, no chiefs of police, no state police will ever, ever, ever call soliciting money. If you get such a call, it is 100% pure scam. Tell them you are reporting them to the real police, see how fast they hang up.
