Just got a call from this number, which I had blocked on my cell via the Mr. Number app--good app.

Ask them if they are police officers and if so what department. If they are not, ask them what percentage of the donation will actually go to the police. Often times these callers are "legitimate" in that they do give a percentage to the police but it is usually a very small percentage just to legitimize them and the rest they keep. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't even ask and assume they are doing a good thing.

This number tried to call me again on my cell phone. Auto reject list did it's thing!

"Can you hear me? You have won a trip...." I hung up immediately. They called my business cell phone and I accidentally answered without looking at the number (don't give out my number to too many people anyway). Shows on phone as (617)829-4511 Quincy, MA

Thanks, but I've got so many legit contacts that start with "S" that the "ZZ" idea actually works better for me.  That way I don't have to scroll through a million 'scam contacts' to find a number I actually want to call!  (I was doing Scam1, Scam2, etc. but it got oppressive) But thanks for trying to help!

I came back here today to check on a call I got with this number on my landline this time.  Another to block.

I'm in the same boat. I'm forced to use specialists in Boston, 150+miles from my home and never know exactly what # they will call from.  A lot of the numbers medical personnel use are call-out-only 'dummy' numbers generated by their phone systems to prevent other household members from knowing who called, due to strictly enforced HIPPA laws in MA.  I used to use the pick up/hang up method to break calls that I thought were spam from getting to my ans. machine and therefore letting the spammer's computer on the other end from registering my # as 'live' to harass us further. BUT, I unintentionally hung up on several docs using this method, so now I'm **stuck** letting all numbers go to ans machine at least once, to verify whether its a valid call or not.  Then, I have to block all the unwanted #s.  But, using this 'new' method, I've seen my spam calls INCREASE from 2-3 daily to 6-10 daily and sometimes more.  They need to tweek the DNC laws to be even stricter, and have more options to opt out or limit these calls.  I know it won't stop the criminals, but, if they are ever causght it could make it easier to 'throw the book' at them.  We also need INTERNATIONAL laws regarding this.  If we severely sanctioned the countries from which a lot of these calls are originating with the cut off of their Foreign Aid Funds, (talking to YOU, India!) I think you'd find these nuisances greatly reduced.

The DNC Law doesn't work as well as it used to because:
1.  Contrary to popular misconception, it is NOT an individual, personal "Call Blocking Service."  It is merely a gov't agency tasked with documenting and disseminating information about the DNC law(s) for the public & business and the violations of such, as reported by the public.  Each individual who has a phone line is responsible for monitoring and obtaining call monitoring or blocking devices or services for themselves either through their carriers or on their own.
2.  It is mostly CRIMINALS who are calling now.  Most legit American companies - including REAL charities - have dropped this method of marketing, knowing the risks are too high for fines and it generates too much ill will amongst the populace.
3.  A lot of the Call Centers are located Overseas, beyond the jusidiction of the US gov't. (Set up on purpose for this reason by less than above board/Extremely large US Corporations (Big Banking, Big Pharma, Big Insurance and others) and the Uber Rich American Scammers (Watch "American Greed"; google "REYNOLD FAMILY SCAMMERS")
4. The US Gov't budget has been emaciated to the point where Enforcement is nearly impossible.
5. The callers exploit loopholes in the Law, and the stupidity and guilability of uneducated or elderly Americans who perpetuate the scams by falling for them, thereby funding these scams to continue.

The best we can do as citizens is to:
1. Refuse to answer any calls whose name or number we do not recognize (assuming one has Caller ID Service.)  Or, let ALL calls go to Answering Machine or Voice Mail, screen them carefully, and only return calls that are likely legit.
2. Obtain a phone, service or device that allows call blocking and use it liberally!
3. Register with the DNC and then REPORT all violators ASAP.
4. WRITE your legislators (calls are less effective) and INSIST that Local, State and Federal Laws are strengthened on this issue and budgets are provided for enforcement.
5. Do your best to stay calm and ignore the onslaught of inevitable calls, knowing you've done the best you can, if you follow these steps.
