- Rex| 1 replyHave recieved many voice mail calls from 4206, they have my name & all state same urgent message & index # to call them at 888-654-0034. But I do NOT have AMEX account, (so I cant call phone # on back of card). But perhaps someone opened a fraudulent account in my name, so I call a published AMEX phone. AMEX searches their nembers & do not find any account in my name nor any reason why AMEX would need to talk to me.

- Kh replies to American Express| 1 replyThey just called us as well. Stating they were verifying a new credit app and wanted to make sure we had submitted it. They gave me the number of 1800-450-8738 to call back on. when you call back to this number it is answered by a person, right away. No prompts or numbers to push etc... seemed fishy. Called amex direct on their 800 number listed on their website. They don't have any 800 numbers ending in 8738, and they had no record of any application submitted on our behalf etc...
This is a scam, according to Amex. It ticks me off, because it took me over 30 mins to check this out. - jack-njcalled and asked if i applied for a credit card

- DebbieSame thing. They say American Express. I have two accounts but from Banks. Was told by banks its is a scam.
- 18004508738| 1 replyCalled to say we had requested information to apply for a card and gave a reference number. We do not have an American Express card or want one.

- kln replies to KhKh i I've just had a similar phone call and did call customer service. The 800 number you mentioned is not in their phone directory. I asked to speak with their fraud department (it took a few transfers), explained that I had received a call regarding someone opening up an account in my name and told them I had not. Yet somebody else had attempted to open an account online. I would suggest you do call back and speak to someone in their fraud department. In my case, someone does have access to my social security number and I've put a fraud alert notice with the credit bureaus. Better safe than sorry.
- BBArticulate, English-speaking woman, claiming her name as Phyllis, called representing American Express from this number. She said she was from an AmEx division in the Phoenix area which appeared to coincide with the caller ID. She indicated someone attempted to open up an AmEx account in my name, claimed to be concerned that it was not me because the applicant kept calling to see if it was approved. Phyllis claimed to shut down the account after I indicated I'd not applied, and that she would send a letter to my home confirming the same. Asked for the street portion to verify my address (not the house number), otherwise didn't ask for other personal info. Timing ironic because in my case, as with previous report, there is actual ID theft already involved and this seemed to coincide with that.

- CC| 2 repliesNot a scam. It was indeed Amex, verifying that I had applied for a loan (which I had) and that it wasn't fraudulently applied for. The voicemail left an 866 number to call and a reference code...this number, however, required being transferred 2 times to get to the actual loan department that was trying to contact me so that was weird. All in all, I did apply for a loan and they only needed to confirm it was me for approval.

Maybe for you it wasn't a scam, but scammers will spoof legitimate companies and attempt to fool people into giving them personal info they can use to further the scam or clean you out if given enough info.Quote:Not a scam. It was indeed Amex
Always call the number on the back of your card and get verification FIRST that someone is contacting you. - Martin StroleThey call repeatedly and never leave a message. I see by other reports on his is American Express. We do not have an Amex card.

- janeCall from this number, "on a recorded line" stating my husbands' info had been used to apply for an account, yet called on my cell phone. Was insistent about speaking directly to him (we were on speaker) and asked for no personal or identifying information. I contacted AMEX when we got home and they have no record of this number in their directory. Reverse look-up says it's a telemarketer. We have credit monitoring with lifelock and currently have a hold on our credit applications through the bureau.

- chris replies to RexI just got the same message today from 1800 450 8738. Total scam !!!!! beware!!!!
- Donald LI got a call from this number. it is actually American express merchant support (NOT THE CONSUMER CREDIT SIDE AT ALL). I made a large charge using a vendor that did not normally put through those types of charges with AMEX, all they had asked for was the last two digits of my dob after they had told me what the expense was and the amount. great to be weary of all the scammers out there, however hear them out first. if you don't have amex your right its probally a scam or at least a wrong number.

- ASMCalls my cell number and the web shows it as American Express. I contacted AE directly - they said it is NOT associated with them. The number has been blocked, but it is annoying and I’m on the DNC list. Fraud phone caller - I’ve had a zero balance and substantial limit for ages anyway.

- KristinaI received a call from this number, they told me it was from American Express. I do not own an American Express card, they told me they were trying to reach one of my neighbors and asked if I knew how to get ahold of them. I didn't recognize the name of the neighbor they were asking about. I asked them where the neighbor lived but they wouldn't tell me. They continued to ask me about different names, none of which I've ever heard of. I asked them to please not bother me regarding other people's business again.

- MarianaI received a vm from 623-492-4206. The caller ID showed "Scam Likely. Arizona." The message was addressed to my son and was about very very very (the guy emphasized it like three time) matter related to AmEx account and asked to call back M-Fr between 8am and 7 pm. The number provided was 623-492-7285. I am not listed as a secondary on any of my son's cards nor as his emergency contact. I told him to call AmEx to complain.
