I have 2 amex accounts, they are both paid monthly, This is a spoof number. If you dont have amex and you are pissed because they have no business calling you, and you don't know this is a spoofed number, you're an idiot.

Legit call from AMEX Merchant Services verifying a large charge. I called the number on the back of my AMEX card and asked for "Merchant Services". I gave them the reference number. It was legit. Unfortunately, the customer service people at AMEX don't know all the phone numbers for their different departments and can't verify all their reference numbers. It's just too complicated for them. You have to be speaking to the right department first. The company is too big. This phone number might be a generic number for many different departments in the area called Account Security. If you don't know which dept called you, call back on the number they leave you and ask which department it is and ask for a reference number.  Then call back using the number on the back of your AMEX card (or a verifiable number from the internet for AMEX) and ask for that department. If you don't have an AMEX, someone might be trying to steal your identity. This department in AMEX is trying to protect people.

It is American Express security.  They left voice mail and I called the number on the back of my card and verified they were trying to verify a large charge (which was valid but worth verifying!).

This number called and gave me the call back number 866-280-1887 and a case # to pass along to my daughter. The only giveaway that is was fraud was me putting the numbers in a google search. Both are scam numbers.

The woman was polite, friendly, unhurried and confident. She told me that there was a suspicious charge on my daughter's account and to have her call soon. No alarms went off when she was speaking. She was not alarmist or speaking in a foreign accent or a robocall. So ALWAYS call the number on the back of your card. That is what I told my daughter.

But I feel sorry for the victims of these horrible people. This woman gets up in the morning each day, "goes to work,' and steals from people. Very unabashedly.

The scammers are on this thread leaving messages about how helpful and honest the number is. Don't believe them. As if a lady in the call center is going to come on here in her off hours and tell us all to trust the number. That doesn't really happen.

Received a call today asking if I had applied for an Amex card.  I said that I did not.  The caller said that the application might have been fraudulent and they would reject it.  He recommended that I set up fraud alerts with the credit bureaus.  This is a good idea for anyone to do anyway.

Called me to check on fraud in reference to AMex card I had applied for....I did not apply for a card!!. Don't have one and don't want one. Now have the number blocked!

Caller ID showed 2 separate phone numbers.  602-537-9012 and 623-492-4206.  When I didn't answer they did NOT leave a message.  I would think that if this had been legit call they would have left a message.

Fraudulent number!  Called Actual amex # and they reported that they never called me.

This is actually a legit call from American Express Security/Fraud Department. I called the number on the back of my credit card and it went to the Security department, and it was verified that the call was From American Express.

Complete scam.  "Kadian Bigbee" left "important message" from American Express.  I called back with a fake name.  He first asked for whole card number, then whole soc sec number.  I said "Are you out of your mind?"  I pressed him - said he was from Sunrise Florida and worked in the loan department.  Kept asking for soc sec number. Beware.

unknown caller,  no message.   I read through the reports here and elsewhere.  Enough people claiming it is legit AMEX, to concern me about identity theft.   I checked my credit report which showed no new inquiries. (Annualcreditreport.com  is the official place to get the government required annual free reports from the 3 agencies. I recommend doing one at a time and spreading them out throughout the year. )   I don't have AMEX.  I wonder if the fraudsters leave false reports to make their call seem legitimate to victims?

Well... it is fraud. I don’t have an AMEX.

I also received a fraudulent call fro (623) 492-4206 as described by others, and I do not have an American Express account.  I reported both the 800 number given in the VM message and the 623 number called from to American Express' spoof e-mail address, and to the National Do Not Call Registry.

Received call at 6:21pm central time, id said arizona call. Message left said calling for "Richard Bumkis" (hard to hear the name but really?). I'm a woman for starters and my initials are KM. Stated she was from the fraud protection department and there had been an application in that name.  Left number 800-450-8738 to call back to with a 4 digit reference number.  Haven't tried calling back.

This # called me, was disconnected mid ring, or they cancelled the call themselves. Blocked the number as I have nothing going with anyone in that area code.
