- MGThis phone number just called my cell phone, at almost 9pm! I didn't pick up, and no message was left.
- jDStop calling. The calls are late no message. Whoever it is must stop it!
- Landa Manders| 1 replyi have gotten 8 calls from this number in the past 2 weeks. I am tired of it!
- Tamianth replies to Landa MandersConsider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.
- Alum replies to Yo Mama| 1 replyThey are an independent organization working for various colleges and universities tryiing to solicit donations for your alumni association. I tell them I don't want to donate yet they seem to contine to call me.
- Red RaiderI don't answer but I'm sure it is a telemarketer for Texas Tech. Good way to make sure I don't donate!
- Caller: Tekemarketer
- Call type: Telemarketer
- Logical Thinker| 1 replyAll you people need to do is answer the damn phone and request to be placed on the 'Do Not Call' list permanently. Just a friendly FYI: Non-Profit organizations (like your dear Alma Mater's Alumni Association) are EXEMPT from state and federal Do Not Call requirements. Non-profits must maintain their own internal Do Not Call list. Do your self a favor, answer the phone and ask them to "PLEASE PLACE ME ON YOUR DO NOT CALL LIST" if you want to stop receiving calls.
- Call type: Non-profit organization
- me tooCalled 8:45pm. California Alumni Association (UC Berkeley). I said I'm not having this discussion this hour of the evening. Very polite woman apologized and said they would call back. Blocked the number. If I choose to donate to UC, it won't be through late night harassment.
- Caller: Direct Line Tec
- Call type: Non-profit organization
- Rational1 replies to Goslowla| 1 replyDirectLine ONLY calls for Colleges, Universities, Health Care Philanthropies, an Public Television. All clients are well know 501(C)(3) organizations with national reputations. Any post that claims otherwise is false and misleading - using the internet for character assassination - a popular hobby with some people.
- Resident47 replies to Rational1The client's reputation is not the primary issue. It's the conduct of the hired commercial fundraiser which matters, which can reflect well or poorly on its client's judgment. Using the internet to whitewash fraud and TSR violations is another popular sport.
- Resident47 replies to Logical ThinkerYou're correct about the DNCR exemptions and the internal no-call list required by the Telemarketing Sales Rule. Don't be too sure of your own compliance. The few articulate comments here indicate a pattern of violations, including scripted false claims of past donation, call abandonment, calls past 21:00, and ignoring verbal demands to quit. "We people" already tried it your way. You still need to obey your damned laws.
- Resident47Charity calls are commonly placed by a commercial fundraiser, such as Associated Community Services, Dial America, Donor Care Center, Donor Services Group, Harris Direct, Horizon Marketing, InfoCision, Insight Teleservices, MDS, and TeleFund. Like all non-sales calls, these are exempt from federal and state no-call registries, even though the call centers executing the recurring campaigns are very much for-profit and pocket most of what is collected.
At times the ''charity'' client is itself a closet profit enterprise, compounding the deception. Never forget that "nonprofit" is a tax category, not an indicator of actual earnings and not a guarantee that anyone who deserves your generosity will benefit.
As commercial entities, the hired call centers are expected to honor an internal no-call list and add any number upon request. Break that order, the FTC declares, and ''the telemarketer may be subject to a fine of up to $16,000.'' They can also be spanked for excess call abandonment and calling outside default hours.
Because the amounts collected are rather small, these call centers are quite motivated to repeatedly hassle you. The worst of the industry will "reload" a donor multiple times a year, preferring forgetful and easily confused victims. Most if not all such phone farms assume that your no-call order, when given verbally or by keypress, conveniently expires when a client's campaign ends.
In comments from November 2012 and June 2013 linked below, I've discussed simple steps I took to rid myself of a major pain fundraising boiler room by politely rubbing its face in federal laws. You will note that I never rely on verbal cease-communication demands.

Funny thing is we have Apple products for years! Never let anyone allow them access to your computer. They sound very serious and official.
- mwThey keep calling, I send them straight to voice mail, never leave message.
- Bob replies to JoeAmen, Joe! I could care less how these snakes feel! Hopefully they'll feel bad enough to leave people alone!!
- BeccaVirgina calling for UNLV? Umm no. And what happened to the students doing the fundraising? I remember it use to be students doing it. I refuse to donate to a company that's doing the fundraising. I use to work for a similar company and they get a percentage of the proceeds or a flat fee outside of the donation. Nope! Bring back the student callers.
