I received a call today about tickets from 1999...18 years ago but I don't remember these tickets...I don't even live in NY anymore for many years ..I went on the Nassau County DMV's website and it stated I must attend court...Anyone have advice what to do? I do not have the means to get off work and go to NY.

It’s ironic regarding this call that I didn’t answer because I live in New Jersey and never gotten any tickets in Long Island. Definitely a scam. Block it.

Received a call from this phone number on Sat., 01/13/2017. When answered with a simple "Hello?", there was a complete silence on the other end, no live person, recorded voice message or any other sounds. I promptly ended the call (hung up) within 15-20 seconds.

That's a definite confirmation of a working number on your end. Likely a computer fishing for working numbers ONLY. Any kind of answer allows them to obtain numbers to resell. With a computer, they're able to call a slew of them at one time. Numbers that just ring probably don't get added and aren't bothered as much, if at all.~I Was Prepared~JustinCase

    In any event,

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question.  As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes.  The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question.  Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else.  So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you.  Let the FTC sort it out.

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

The only way for them to remove your phone is for you to communicate with them. 800 Notes is a public site for posting comments and information, but not responsible for your personal phone listing (which number they do not ask for); nor can they manage your phone issues.

CID Unknown. I too received a request to call them; it was for someone else with my name (they've called before) but the best way to handle them is request (its a legal right) a written copy of the billing and all payment(s) made on account (including insurance or adjustments).
They  must provide one on request, and if they don't (many bill collectors only have a line item on a computer download- called a 'package') and you have no responsibility to this or to any other bill collector without a written verification of what the bill represents. Often one collector will sell their uncollected package to another, whether or not the line item is legitimate, and they knew it.

Be sure to ask for the 'original billing', source of debt, payments (including deposits or co-pays - some billings don't show the co-pays until the bill is marked 'paid in full' and any other credits or charges to the balance. In our case, it was a dentist we had never done business with, so we know we don't owe the balance requested.

But, the only way to do this is to 'talk' with the collection agency.

Then, make a call to you credit agency (local or nation reporting agency) to record the 'disputed' balance.
