Oh, for a minute there I thought you wrote "decreased morals" of your minions, which would be IMPOSSIBLE to decrease any further. I did check the FDCPA and decreasing the "morale" of the boiler room personnel doesn't seem to be covered anywhere.

Is it true really little ol' 800notes can decrease the "morale" of the boiler room collection crooks? That is SO COOL!!!

I shudder to think how many old ladies and old man that don't have the info or knowledge about these thieves, who have been unknowingly scammed by them. Really, a full inquiry, and complete investigation of all money received by Portfolio Recovery must be done, and the people scammed should be contacted, and I'm sure all of them will deserve a full refund.

I think one year in prison for each case of everyone who has been scammed, would be appropriate punishment for Steven D Fredrickson...and the return of all money and property he has earned from Portfolio Recovery.

Steven D Fredrickson must not be allowed to profit off his criminal actions.

Hard to believe Mr Frederickson is out walking the streets. He is a very dangerous man with a criminal mind and it seems to me, he should definitely be behind bars for the rest of his life.

This a collections agency - Portfolio Recovery Associates. They call all the time and if you answer the phone you will regret it! Best advice - don't talk to them - let them send you a letter if they have a real debt to collect! They won't answer questions, they won't do anything but accuse of you of owing them money and accuse of you refusing to pay. They call several times per day. And if they confirm your name they will track you down and start calling you at your job.  They leave voice mail messages in public phones at your job. They refuse to provide proof of the debt, they ignore written requests to stop calling you at your job, and they will file false lawsuits against you if they think they can get away with it. These people are the worst and they will stop at nothing to get money. I don't understand how this company is allowed to continue their practices. It's all over the internet about all the illegal things they have done to harass people. They will post false information to your credit reports in an effort to get you to respond or react.  They are liars out to get money from innocent people. Once you talk to them one time, you will never get rid of them unless you change your phone number. Their so-called legal department contains the worst people ever - they will say any awful thing they can to you to get you to stay on the phone so they can continue to harass you.

Steven D Fredrickson is perpetrating a massive fraud with his RICO type company Portfolio Recovery Associates. This company in my opinion is similar in design and scale to the recent Madoff scandal in which Bernard Madoff is currently serving 150 years in prison. I feel Steven D Fredrickson's prison sentence, when it happens, should be longer.

Suit: Debt collectors scam residentsSt. Louis Business Journal

Two debt collection companies operate scams to collect debts from people who don’t owe money, according to lawsuits filed Tuesday by Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster.

Koster sued Portfolio Recovery Associates, of Norfolk, Va., and Professional Debt Management, of Kansas City.

Portfolio buys old and bankruptcy-discharged debt, often from another bad debt buyer, and then tries to collect, sometimes through court action and sometimes tries to collect from the wrong consumer or for the wrong amounts, Koster said.

A request for comment from Portfolio Recovery Associates was not immediately returned.

Professional Debt Management uses scare tactics, leaving messages on consumers’ phones that there is an emergency, Koster said.

Like Portfolio, Professional Debt Management tries to collect on accounts already paid or from the wrong party, he said.

Professional Debt Management referred questions to its lawyer, Jeffrey Zimmerman, who declined to comment because he hadn't seen the lawsuit yet.

Koster is asking the court to fine the companies and require them to pay all court costs.

I hope that the owners and management of this scam operation, such as Steven D Fredrickson and the rest of his gang of thieves also incur a significant prison sentence for their crimes...but I guess maybe that is going to have to get done on a federal level. Great that at least we got the ball rolling to finally eliminate this shameful, scamming company...but Stebven D Fredrickson and the rest must be made to pay back all the money they made from this scam, and pay punitive damages as well, otherwise they'll just start the same thing over again under a different name.

Got a call from these people on my cell phone today, told me that it was from my HSBC account.  Told me the amount was $376, when I said that I wanted a letter so I could dispute the debt, the collector had the gall to ask me why!!  WHY?  WHY?  How about ITS MY RIGHT AS A DEBTOR?  Or how about the fact that this has been paid off?  I know it was paid of because family members helped me out.  They claim that they sent letters to my residence, funny, haven't seen any.  Finally told her that I was at work and had to go, asked me what I did, told her under FDCPA Law never to contact me again and hung up.  I was a bill collector for a little over a year before I quit, this is NOT how I was trained to talk to someone.

Steven, first of all the correct term is "bold" faced liar... not "bald". Bald faced or bare faced refers literally to having no hair on the face.  Bald faced came out of people who misunderstood 'bold' and said or wrote in incorrectly.
Second of all, most of the people here that are upset at your company do not owe you money.  I am one of them.  I have been getting calls for a year or more asking for "Lars Nino".  I have no idea who that is, furthermore I looked up the name and can find no record of such person living in this area code so I question if this is even a real person.  I've called the company back twice or more requesting they please stop calling me because they have the incorrect number.  The keep telling me I will be removed from the list and apologize for the inconvenience - but somehow I STILL GET CALLS!!!  At obnoxious hours at that - early Saturday mornings, later in evening.  It's uncalled for, unprofessional and dishonest.
That is the problem with debt collectors like yourself.  You are quick to call anyone who has a problem with your practices 'deadbeats' and other derogatory names, yet you are throwing stones at people who are not in debt and owe nothing.  Remove yourself from your high horse and implement some changes at your company so that innocent people are not being harassed for debts they are not responsible for.  How DARE you say these people should be in jail, innocent people who owe nothing.  Shame on you.

I believe people are looking at this the wrong way.

Yes, these guys are bottom-feeding scum, but they are also in business to make money.  With that in mind, one could expect their return on investment is based on the volume of calls they make.

The more calls, the more likely they can sucker someone into paying.

So if you can slow down their ability to harass people, it directly impacts their bottom line.   Next time they call, ANSWER the phone and let them hear silence after saying hello (to ensure the auto-dialer connects to a representative) or jerk them around as long as they will let you.  I have heard of people giving the phone to their 2 year old children. =D

Hanging up doesn’t help since the auto-dialer will just call the next person.  By answering the phone, it ties up the bottom-feeder and robs them of precious time.  They might have auto-dialers that can call many lines at once, but they have a limited about of people to answer those calls.

The other option is to wait them out until they go away.  There is a limit on how long they will continue calling before giving up and moving on to new people to bother.

So I suggest the following, use your cell phone as your contact number.  I know this sounds counter-intuitive, but I have a good reason for this.  Once they start calling your phone, store the phone number as a contact with a name as “Do Not Answer” and set the ringer to silent for that contact!

From then on, all they will get is your voicemail, and those messages can be quickly deleted.

If you don’t want to give out your cell phone number, there are voicemail only lines you can use for credit card signups and the like. Good luck!

I'm going down the list of unknown numbers on my cell and this is one of them though they called a few months ago and it's Sept 29 2009 now. I remember that all of these numbers left no message so I never called back or answer if they call back again.

I have been receiving calls from this number since May of 2009.  After being constantly harrassed, I decided to answer the call.  They told me I still owed a debt from the previous year.  I had a letter from that company they were claiming I owed debt to, stating my account was paid in full.  I faxed that letter to Portfolio whatever it is and I hadn't heard from them again, therefore I thought...this was taken care of.  I just received a call from them today, November 3, 2009.  WHY ARE THEY CALLING ME AGAIN?!!!  They also filed a report on my credit as a negative report, that they are trying to collect a debt.  I disputed it yesterday with Experian....hmmmm, could that be why they are calling me again today? To try and get money I don't owe??!!!
