HURRY and call your bank, and stop payment on the debit card!
A 13-year old debt is long past its expiration date.
    You have been scammed.

If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

Said they were from Capital One and wanted info on my credit card.  Told her I would not do that because I didn't know if she really was Capital One.  She told me to call 800-227-4825 Helen ID ARA725.  I didn't fine this number on Capital One's website.  I called Capital One and they were lost also.

The guy from Whitman & Associates said he had a judgement on me for a line of credit from HSBC, which I dont have, but they said that they would go after all of my assets and seize them. Also told me that they would go after my family members, contacts, and place of emplloyment to get the judgement satisfied. They gave me the 800-227-4825 and when you call, it says its capital one, but its not really them. They asked me if my card was active or inactive, and I told them that they should know if it was active or inactive. Thats when I said its inactive, and goodbye. I called the number on the back of my Capital One card and they put a fraud report out.

This number is listed on the Capital One customer service website.  Guess it is unfortunate there is a way it can come across and not actually be legit for some.  If in doubt, tell them you will call customer service yourself.

I just received a card that I didn't order from Capital One and it had this number on the back of it.  I called it and I've been on hold for the last 10 minutes or so waiting for them to close the account.

FYI -- I just checked their website and this number is listed as the customer service number.  Looks like it's a legit # for Capital One.

This number is the actual number on the back of Capital One cards.  It's the true number.  But scammers can spoof a number, so if you get one of these calls, hang up and then call back (using the number is on the back of your card).  That way, you'll know you're talking to an actual Capital One rep and not a scammer who is spoofing the number to make it appear as if he were calling from the legitimate site.

It's sad how careful you have to be nowadays. But I'm glad I called back because there actually was illegal activity on my card.

This caller is REAL. It is the Capital One fraud department.  I had fraudulent activity on my account today. I received an email from capital one telling me to go to the fraud section of their website, which is where I found this number. I tried logging into my account, and yes it was locked as stated in the email. When I called this number, they were able to help me and unlock my account while I was on the phone with them and watch it happen online.

"which is where I found this number"  So you knew that the number belonged to this group but looked it up anyway and then decided to post here?

Capital One's phone number is 1-800-CAPITAL or 1-800-227-4825. So this is a legit number, but scammers are spoofing it.

I don't understand the confusion here.
1-800-CAPITAL or 1-800-227-4825   IS the phone number for Capital One Customer Service, as printed on the back of their Credit Cards.
So, if YOU call that number, you ARE calling Capital One, and the call is legit.
BUT, if you GET a call from this number, it is likely spoofed, and you should NOT answer it, and you should NOT provide ANY personal info if you do.
Again, if YOU call, it's OK.
If you GET a call, hang up, then call Capital One if you have an account with them.

I have to tell you that the number posted is the number on the back my credit card, TO CALL THEM, not a scam (in August 2017). I was not called, I called them at the number to request a credit line increase.
It was legit Cap One. customer service.
