Called for, what sounded like, a "Dana Goo". It said if I was her to press one, if not press two. I kept pressing two, but all it did was replay the automated message again.

Why can't this be stopped?  I have no debt problem and I don't want to be called by some idiot at 8 AM.  Today she promiced to take my number off her list and I know all she did was change the name on it.  There should be a law covering this nonsence.

Under the TCPA, a consumer has a right to file a lawsuit and recover $500 for each call that violates the TCPA. The TCPA can also be used in conjunction with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in some situations.  

Generally, the TCPA does not apply to debt collectors making collection calls to debtors. However, if you are subjected to calls from a debt collector and you are not the debtor, you may file a lawsuit against the debt collector under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and the TCPA.

This right was recently recognized by Judge Legrome D. Davis in a case called Watson v. NCO Group, Inc.  NCO Group is a debt collector that uses automated prerecorded collection calls.  In this case, Mr. Watson alleged he was getting hundreds of calls from NCO Group after he got a new phone number. Mr. Watson claimed he owed no debt to NCO Group, Inc.  Mr. Watson filed suit under both the FDCPA and TCPA.

David Israel, defense lawyer for NCO, argued that the TCPA should not apply to debt collectors.  Judge Davis rejected the argument made by David Israel. The judge ruled that Mr. Watson had a right to sue NCO Group Inc under the TCPA for $500 for each call.  Judge Davis wrote;

[The] Court is convinced that a non-debtor's rights are in fact violated when he is subjected to repeated annoying and abusive debt collection calls that he remains powerless to stop.

Judge Davis' ruling was based upon his interpretation that collection calls to non-debtors violate the privacy rights provided by the TCPA.  

So what can you do if you receive "wrong number" calls from debt collectors?

1. Sign up for the Do-Not-Call registry.
2. Save the calls captured by your voice mail or answering machine.
3. Contact a consumer lawyer.

I just got a call from my ex mother in law asking me not to use her as a credit reference, which by the way I didn't, because she is getting calls from this number.  First of all, why would anyone use an ex in-law as a credit reference........

These people call our phone # on a daily basis. I have blocked their # from calling us. They have asked for different people when they were able to get through, and they do use different phone numbers.I believe that these people are scam related, cause we don't owe money to anyone or on anything. We have told these people serveral times to stop calling. They wont listen. So I suggest just blocking their number if you can, cause they will not leave you alone. Got 2 phone calls from them already (shows up on our blocked list), sometimes they will call 5 to 6 times a day (at times even late at night like at 8 or 9pm). It is annoying.

Called and left a message that they were trying to collect a debt, left a ref #, I called the number they left, left them a message to call me back so I can threaten them with the FCC

Now they are calling me at all hours, multiple times per day and I am sick of it!  I don't answer, but it does not stop them.  I have no debt for them to collect.

This number called me tonight. I answered the phone and no one said anything. I said "Hello" repeatedly and finally hung up.

Received a call from this number today. The voicemail said it's Academy Collections Service. I do have debt so that makes sense. Hope this helps others out.

They called my cell phone.  The cell phone is only for family and emrgencies, there is no way any company ahs my number.  Yet we have had the same number for three years so it cannot be a mistake, has to be a scam.

They call me all the time about a credit card that was charged off years ago.

I just dont answer the phone(thank god gor caller ID).All you gotta do is when they call answer and be a complete a__hole to them and they hang up.

This is a collection agency looking for someone that probably gave out a fake number.  Call them back and hold the line - someone will pick up half the time and you can ask to have your number removed from their call list.

We have received many calls from 800 503 3852 (Academy Collection Service).  After growing frustrated with their repeated attempts to extract personal information from my wife, I called them (FROM WORK) and explained that they are clearly tracking down the wrong person. This approach can work, IF you are careful not to offer any information.  For example, you can ask:  "Who specifically are you trying to reach?" In this case, the address and the middle name were both wrong, and they actually APOLOGIZED and promised to discontinue calling our number (we'll see!). Debt collectors do, in fact, provide an important service. So don't blame all of the nuisance on them.  If it wasn't for the very creative tactics of debtors trying to elude collectors, this message string wouldn't even exist.

This company has called my 13-year-old daughter's prepaid cell number sixteen times. We have perfect credit and no debts. I've emailed them a cease-and-desist email but, since there is no case number, I doubt that they will do anything about it.

These people call me constantly at my work.  I can't ever get a full name out of them, but today a girl named Tina called me.  This is total harrasement and if it doesn't stop I am reporting them.

This company is so stupid to think they can get info and or $$ for folks by simply calling them several times a day. They called my house and asked for "sorry bit_ch"...no lie forreal. I saved the recording and will be receiving $500 per call b'cuz they do not know the law - idiots!!! I'm coming for you fake company Academy of Idiots. Get a life and a real job.
