Calls from this number may or may not be legitimate but as scammers spoof legitimate numbers all the time, you should never give them personal information of any sort. Instead, hang up and call a known number for them, such as the one on the back of your card.

I just love all the "Oh, yes, it is them!" posts.  They never give a good explanation for why (supposedly already knowing exactly who called) they have come to this site meant to help people identify UNKNOWN numbers that call.  This sort of behavior has more of the hallmarks of a shill than someone acting out of the kindness of their heart.

The answer I usually see is "To let people know it's a legitimate caller. That's what this site us for, right?"

First the good news: You are right, this is the number of the American Express fraud department.

Now the bad news: Firstly, “usaeagle” will never see your post; because they made their post eight and a half years ago and have not posted in this thread since.  Secondly, if you had bothered to read past the second post in this fourteen-page thread you would have found that most of the posts here are from people who called AMEX directly and found there was no problem or they had never had an AMEX card to start with.  There are posts that proclaim “It’s true!  It’s true!” but they have the same feel as the shilly folderol you posted.  It is obvious that there are one of more criminal outfit spoofing this number in hopes of stealing peoples account information.  Your post reads like you are one of their shills, come here to do some damage control by posting an “It’s True!” post on the first page.  Sorry to tell you, but the site changed to a “new posts go to the back of the line” policy a long time ago, so it appears you have wasted your time a couple times over.

Yes, my name does suit me, but, unlike you (whose education was apparently mostly hours spent plopped in front of the Idiot Box watching Bugs Bunny cartoons), I understand what the true meaning and history of my name is.

I did read your other post, and I am still waiting for a good explanation, since yours is not.  You can read my reply in the post that is just before this one.

My caller ID listed 800-528-4800, I did not answer. I later called back, and after a short music introduction, a Bot told me I had reached American Express. It asked me to identify my self asking for the last 4 of my SSAN. Fair enough, I gave it and the Bot then told me it was about my American Express Account and the Bot gave me the last four of my Amex Credit Card Number. When the Bot then asked me for the 3 number on the back of the card, my suspicions were raised. I didn’t know there were 3 numbers on the back of the card, as we always use the 4 on the front of the card. (I didn’t even know we had 3 numbers on the back as no one ever asked me before.) Since this was giving information that they should know, I hung up.
This bogs my mind, According to this very web site, people have been complaining about this obvious scam for 9 years. When I someone going to do something!

I spoke to AMEX earlier today after receiving calls from this number.  They confirmed that the call I had received from 800-528-4800, was in fact a scammer who obviously called from a different number and had the software to mask his number and replace it with 800-528-4800.  AMEX confirmed that they will never ask for and you should never supply any information to verify your identity if they call you.  You should only have to verify your identity if you call them.  And furthermore, they said they will never at any time ask you for any part of your account log-in information,  or any information that they have emailed you.  And the only time you should ever disclose any of this info is if AND when, you call them.

Got a text on my phone this AM.  Looks (and sounds) legit.  Tells me they've dispatched a 1-time code (that I "requested") to my email re my Amex acct. Instructed me to text STOP if not me, and to immediately call this number.  We called the #....but didn't follow through with their prompts, etc.  (Still suspicious).  Decided to search the number and found it to be a scam.  But as others have pointed out --- this very number IS listed on AMEX's website as a 24/7 number to call.  How are these people doing this....????

Have received 2 calls from this number, on a Sunday morning. All the posts above identify it as either being from American Express or spoofed so it looks like its coming from Amex. I suppose it could be, but I’m leery about answering since I get so many scam calls - sometimes 6 or 8 a day - and just don’t answer anything that isn’t from friends or family.
