Had this number with "American Exp" caller ID call over the past month at least 8 times.  Called them back Mar 16th, a sketchy guy says "whats your card number".  I told them I would not give this out, he then said "what is your full social security number"?  I refused again told him I was going to call the AmEx number on the back of my card.  He said " Its regarding fraud".  I hung up and called the real American Express who said they do no have any departments or facilities using that number (800-528-4800)  The American Express rep said they would investigate the fraudulent number.

This number called today (calls all the times, several times a week, at least a couple times a day), I decided to answer just to see what would happen.  They asked for my son, mispronouncing his name (a common name the world around), and that it was about his American Express, and I just said, wrong number and hung up.  If they call again I will engage them more to see what they are really after.

Honestly, if they are the "real" American Express, wouldn't the caller ID say so, rather than "TOLL FREE CALL"??  It's almost like they haven't heard of caller ID.  We, too, refuse to answer toll free calls from 800 or 866, unless (rarely) identified as some retailer or something we were expecting a call from.  Even then, it pays to keep your guard up these days.

Now if I could get my MD's assistants to call me on the office/clinic phone, rather than their personal phones, I'd know it was ABOUT MY HEALTH and not ignore!

If you visit the AMEX website >contact us> customer service, (800) 528-4800 is listed there. So, this is not some random scammer; just AMEX looking to suck the life out of you. I called the number to find out why they're calling me and they couldn't give me a reason. I asked to 'Opt-Out' of the calls and the rep whom I spoke with told me I needed to have the primary card holder call. I'm an authorized agent of the card. Why can't I make a decision like remove my number if you don't know why your end is calling my phone number? I'm the one on this end being harrassed. So, if they have the wrong number listed in their system, would I need to go and find the primary card holder for that account? AMEX, go scratch!!

    Annoyed at AMex
I just called them and told them off.  I demanded I be opted out of everything.

It is AMEX.  Call them and demand that you be opted out of EVERYTHING.  That increase in junk mail may be from Amex partners too.

    RED ALERT!  RED ALERT!

Hold back the phasers Captain.  Sulu belay that last command from the Captain.  Too much Romulan Ale, Sir.

It is illogical to receive unwanted calls.  My human friends, there is no need to panic.  Trek over to the internet and follow these simple instructions.   Just opt out of phone communication from American Express.  It is easy and emotionless.

    1.  Go to your American Express account online.
    2.  Log into your account
    3.  Go to customer services tab on the web site.
    4.  Scroll down to Alert and Communication Settings
    5.  Look for Privacy tab on the left
    6.  Look for "ways to contact you" and look for "TELEPHONE"
    7.  Simply choose "NO"
    8.  SAVE

It is that easy.  It's so easy even a  Klingons and Ferengi can do it with little trouble.  But beware of the Ferengi stealing your passwords online.  Worse than those Nigerians promising to wire you $1,000,000 into your bank account.

    I hope this helps you.

I did not know this.............I just followed advise of another email and called american express and she was tlling me that I had opted out of telemarketing calls so she ws not sure why i was getting them.......if you see this message, can you tell me what happened when your phone company investigated??  This must be becoming easy to do........I had another number calling me constantly and I called it back and got a voice mal for a "gun shop" - The owner returned my call and apologized profusely and said he was receiving a ton of complaint calls but assured me it was not him calling and he was also having Verizon investigate.........and I am still getting the calls..........

Just logon to your account online, go to your communication preferences, and turn off every single stupid option they have (minus fraud alerts, I guess)
You'll be shocked to see how many different ways to receive marketing messages you are enrolled in by default.

This number rings twice a week at my unlisted phone. So far, they have called 5 times in 8 days, with never a message left. The calls ramge from 10 AM to 7 PM in the evening. If I feel like it, I pick up the phone and put it back down, which breaks the connection, but it is annoying-I see that others here ARE on the Do Not Call Registry, so how is this slipping through?

I hope to never see that number again.

I'lve spoken directly with Amex counsel in Florida who works for Laura Kelly, SVP, Global Product & Marketing at American Express.  They claim it is NOT them, however, they agree that this is indeed one of their numbers at customer service.  Some how, some where, someone is having this number come up in caller ID when in fact it's NOT the number that's calling and is NOT Amex.  I have reported such to the FCC, but you know that's not going to help much.

I personally get 1 to 3 calls per day at my office, we have simply blocked the call from coming through at all.  Best part we've arranged for the calling party to actually hear the "this phone has been disconnected" and they still keep calling.  It's a bot making the calls.

Good luck, but that's what's going on.

Don't have caller I.D. so asked for a number to call them back and was given 1-800-5280-4800 (btw I clicked"0" vs. the requested "5" and got the sales pitch anyway). They knew my name but didn't know what brand credit card I use.  I suspect it is a marketing ploy to sign up American Express cards and transfer balances to them.  Regardless, my number is on Do Not Call so it is illegal as I have no account with AMEX and have not contacted them previously.
If it continues, I plan to file a formal complaint against AMEX and help them get a fine of up to $16,000 per incident for violating the DNC regulations (Call the registry’s toll-free number 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236).
Just like SPAM, which should be forwarded to "SPAM@UCE.GOV", if you don't takes some pro-active move against these scofflaws, no fines will be imposed or remedies will be administered!

    Just Moi
I've been getting these calls at least twice a day (or night till about 830PM EDST) for the last month and a half.  I screen for this number and never answer.  Me thinks this is initiated by a robo-call setup.  With no effort on their part to start a dialog, I suspect its some sort of effort to document when this call(s) is answered.  Maybe this is a survey to better understand when people are most likely to be home and THAT would be the best time for real tele-marketers to try contacting you... me.... EVERYBODY !!!   We're all doomed !!!
