- CBThis is legitimate.
I applied for a business card recently, and they called the following day saying they needed to verify my physical address. After a few questions the woman asked for my debit card number so that we could call the bank and verify my address with them. I thought that sounded like a bit much to ask. I told her I would have to call them back and was provided with the 800-567-1083 number.
I called back on an alternate line with which I had applied for the card, and I was directed to the New Accounts department who confirmed that they did need to verify the address, that they had made the outbound call and that occasionally they will ask for the debit card number when using a bank to verify information. The operator and I called the bank and verified the address together. He did not make me give any debit card information and simply had the bank verify my identity through their own methods.- Caller: American Express
- AB| 1 replyThis is completely bogus. We got a call from this number. Dude had a heavy indian accent. Then called the 800 number back and some lady was speaking french on the voicemail. Then we called the AMEX number on my card, and the real AMEX people said there was no record of any call to us, and that there would be no reason for any call to us. We opened our Costco AMEX over a year ago, so it had nothing to do with opening a new account. I wouldn't call these people back. Big scam... They must have gotten our numbers illegally somehow. Here phishy, phishy, phishy...

It totally seemed sketchy when a message was left for me a week or so after getting my Delta AmEx card (since it had already been activated and used), so I looked it up myself (which is how I wound up here) but accents and phish-suspicions aside, it's for real.- Caller: American Express
- Terry HarikulThe number 1-800-567-1083 is legitimate.
I was worry at first. I have old costco AmEx card and applied for a new one with higher cash back. When I called the number they have information on my old AmEx card that phisher would not know.- Caller: American Express
- Debbie, New MexicoSo, I just spent 3 hours chasing this mess....turns out it IS legitimate. If you have questions, go straight to the AMEX fraud department. This is the AMEX East Indian Call Center. They are responsible for verifying any and all changes to an existing or new account.

- 8005671083I have to agree with PHIL, this number is a Phishing Scam...et.al, a telemarketer located in India. Got approved yesterday from a different phone number located in Wisconsin after speaking to an older woman in her 50's located in a different state and not another country, from American Express.
Waiting for the new card. This young girl at this phone number is only a 26 year old and located in India. We spoke about the new miss America....the first time in American History that an American Indian woman was chosen as Miss America. The poor kid filed a complaint on National Television, because she got more than 7,000 threats from Twitter, as she won... she must have been flamed verbally by over 7,000 Miss American viewers who weren't happy about something.- Caller: American Express Telemarketer.

- Donny B BadWe continued to receive calls from 800-567-1083.
We did not recognize the number so we allowed it to ring through and go to voice mail.
Never once was a message provided.
I got annoyed and called my phone company.
They suggested I enter the number in my browser
(I didn't know that would work so I learned something here...)
At that point I recalled having applied at Costco for American Express quite a few weeks ago.
Now it all made sense, however,
what is wrong with American Express to not have the courtesy to identify and leave a message?
Perhaps their mother taught them differently than mine.
All is well now.
Peace has returned to the farm ;-) - David| 1 replyThis is a legitimate number for American Express. You can verify it through their website. Go to American Express and search for 800-567-1083 from their website.
I recently became a victim of identity theft, and they contacted me from this number, for their fraud department. Someone had applied for a credit card in my name. I let it go to voicemail and verified it through their website before calling back.- Caller: American Express
- MariaI have been receiving a lot of calls from this number but no voice mail left. I checked and it is a legitimate number for AMX . I had recently applied for a card but when they checked my file, the system did not show any calls made to me. The customer service person said that have been having a lot of problems with the phone system the past few days.
