- JujuI received a message from 800-567-1083 couple of days ago, by a person named 'Ashish', calling from American Express about a "personal matter." Sounded odd, so I called the number (I had it saved when I first applied for an AMEX card) and the representative requested my SSN over the phone. I did provide the information as I considered this a trusted number since I had previously spoken with other representatives via this line before.
The representative told me that there were no "notes" on my account about a call and even checked with the Fraud Department and found no security concerns. When I looked at my transactions, I found no fraudulent activities either.
So bizarre...- Caller: Amex...?
- TrevorThis is an extremely elaborate phishing scam. Many positive reviews are left by those partaking in this scam. The 18005671083 number leaves a message to me addressed by my first and last name claiming they are with American Express “high risk” department and someone has tried opening an account in your name. Give reference # and ask that you call back 18004508738 and business hours. I called back the 18005671083 # as there were many reviews saying it’s legit. There is an automated recording with options of 1 check status, and 2 respond to msg regarding someone opened a card in your name. You get this call is recorded for quality assurance. After saying I got the message and didn’t open a card the very first question is what’s your first and last name so I can look up what happened.., (didn’t ask for the reference #) 2nd question that’s asked is what’s your social? RED FLAG no companies call you and ask you this!!!. I said no way I’m giving you that because I don’t even know you’re Amex... how about just the last 4? No you have my name and phone number and I won’t give you any of my social. Ok but I assure you we are Amex look up the number and see. How about your birthday? No I will not. But we need to verify you are first (first and last name) How about just birth year? And your address? Then you get transferred to RED FLAG “Concerns Department” while holding there is an automated message about JD Power associates ranking American Expresd app #1 and how to download app. Then Concerns department says ok we have removed this credit inquiry and you should report to your credit agency. anything else to help you with? - 1800 528 4800 is there real American Express fraud department #. BEWARE of this sophisticated phishing scam! Do not call back. Again no company, Amex or other will ever contact you via phone and ask for your social!!!! Do not believe the misleading reviews of any #s associated with this scam. It’s elaborate and disheartening that it’s happening. Many of the reviews say “I applied for a Costco card and had forgot I did.. it’s legit” how many people forget they applied for a credit card???? SCAMMERS. Stay vigilant

- B-Edwards replies to Greg KimHummm..... posts going back to 2007, reporting both AMEX and even Delta. Some say Legit. Some say scam. Could be both. I am guessing that crooks are spoofing the name and number.
The safe way to go is to be careful about what info you offer or confirm and then call AMEX yourself on a number you know is good. - post pending moderator approval
- Tygerkat replies to X.L.Do you often look up known phone numbers when there's no logical reason to do so?

- nevermind replies to ABSome people say its a legitimate number and some say it is not. Two reasons why: 1. The people posting positive remarks are the criminals themselves 2. It is a legitimate number that is flashed across your caller ID reader but the caller is actually a criminal on a different, hidden phone number who will scam you if you answer the call. Best if you do what some people have said: call the bank/credit card on the number on back of your card and ask if they are trying to contact you. Do not rely on your caller ID reader anymore; it may be lying to you.
- Ed| 1 replykeep getting call from this number. finally called the number. This is a very slick operation.
Very realistic posing as American Express. I followed the automated directions on checking status of request for an account. I have never requested an account with American Express. So I responded 'identity Theft". Automated response to this was We are experiencing trouble with your call, please call back later. This is definitely a scam. - TelcoKittyMy spouse got numerous call from this number shortly after applying for a new business Delta/American Express card.
Unsure what they were trying to sell, but they wanted information, so it seemed like it was either a timely telemarketing follow-up call or phishing attempt.
