Hi, can someone give me some advice.  I am getting phone calls  from this number constantly.  They also appear to have frozen my bank account somehow.  My husband recently passed  away, I lost my apt, my job and ended up in the hospital  for several months.  How can they freeze my bank act without a letter informing me of a lawsuit and judgement?

NO one can freeze your bank account without a court order. You need the advice of a consumer law attorney. If you can't afford one, contact your local legal aid society for assistance.

It's a collection company Total Credit Recovery collecting on behalf of Ontario Student Assistance (among other clients such as Capital One). If you have outstanding student loan with OSAP that's why they're calling you. If you don't want to get calls send them a registered letter telling them that you don't owe anything and if OSAP thinks you owe them money then they should go to court. Putting your number of the national DNC list will not help LOL! At the end of the day they are a collections agency who have quotas to deliver and you can expect all the usual tactics and lingo: call us now, call us by ... or you'll be in trouble, our lawyers are reviewing your file, etc. All [***] and empty threats. They will not sue unless you owe a substantial amount and they know they have a good chance of recovering the money. Ironically if you work for any government office that probably places you in the least favorable position LOL

The above post is a shill post and not be paid attention to. Its also highly doubtful you would even get a response since the forum does not send out notices for reply's either. It also never a good idea to post your personal information in a public forum since scammers, trolls & shills do read here. You open yourself for a ton of scam email. I've flagged admin to remove your information. Your best bet for this kind of information is to look up the BBB information on this company.

I just received a call from this number  - this the second company that is calling and leaving messages! And the recording says that they have a personal message and information for me.
And I have had enough. I have never been in thus KNOW that these calls are unwarranted.
I also do not like to be threatened with a 'call before or else...' when there is no legitimate reason for doing so.

What happens is.... old debts are sold off to these companies.  Who are generally out of your country.  They "TRY" to collect, using strong arm tactics.  The bullying is their way of trying to collect.  Just hang up.  Not worth an aneurysm!  :-)

I meant to add:  The debts are bought by these companies because the original people trying to collect have failed in their attempts.  So they sell the debt to these companies to make some money.. and these companies in turn try to collect from you.  This is why they bully.  They need to make money from the accounts that they bought.  Say you owe $10,000.  They buy it for $2,000. [because the company that you owed wants something] So if they can recover the 10,000... that bully company just made 8 thousand.

These people I have found from a online search are a collection agency out of N-S? Carolina in the States and they even use a 604 number sometimes to cover there tracks?

Jason, that's not entirely true. People (including me and others on this thread) have never had unpaid debt and are still getting these phone calls. We have never been contacted by previous debt collectors that were unsuccessful. Thinking of getting rid of our land line just to rid ourselves of all the calls.

Debt telemaggoters are notorious for calling outdated numbers and harassing innocent people. I know this because I have gone through it in the past.

Called numerous times claiming to be from "Ministry of Finance and asking me to provide my full name and address. I said "Ah , No, you called me, and it's Saturday morning and government people don't work on the weekend. This is a scam. He replies, why do you think this is a scam. I tell him, that you people call frequently, and that if this is legit, contact me by mail. I DO NOT DO BUSINESS ON THE PHONE". He hangs up.

This is fraud. Do not give them a single piece of information. They want you to confirm your address and SIN number for reasons of fraud. Look up the phone number for Total Credit Recovery, they are NOT associated with 1-800-727-4145. There is no point complaining about their business practices because they are not a real business, adding your number to the National Do Not Call List is irrelevant because they are a fraud firm. They hung up on me because I refused to give up my address and SIN. I advised that I spoke to Total Credit Recovery by calling their local number and I have no active account/debt with them, I also do not have any debt with The Ministry of Finance which they claimed I owe a debt to, they are full of it. Call Total Credit Recovery on the phone number they have listed on their website. Do not call this number back. A big red flag is the way they answer the phone...dont fall for this. Take the extra steps to avoid being a victim of fraud.

They've been calling us for almost 2 years regarding a traffic fine with the ministry of finance. The fine was levied on someone with alzheimer's driving the wrong way on a one way street. If I pay these parasites she'll get her license back and can go back to being a menace to public road and pedestrian safety. They've been calling using "out of area" 1-800-727-4145, locally spoofed #'s. They've left a message once, nothing threatening asking to call them back. They are so predictable, comical and desperate trying to collect a hundred plus $ over a period of almost two years. We leave the ringer off and only answer the phone when it's people we know. Eventually, the statute of limitation applies in certain cases (but not all) after a time period has expired. After which, they have to write it off as bad debt.

If you are getting these calls and don't owe anyone money - then there is a mistake.

However, this is not a scam IMO.

I had an outstanding student loan debt from like 1995.  After doing my taxes recently, I opened up an online account with the CRA.  Right on my CRA account hompage I noticed i had a note about my "debt owing" to the Ontario Ministry of Finance.

It gave me a number to call and it was 1-800-727-4145.  Im not saying these dudes don't make mistakes, they are probably [***] to many people BUT they certainly have a working relationship with the Ontario Ministry of Finance - that much I am sure of.
