- X replies to Vicki| 1 replyThat's just NOT true and it is the IRS It's the federal tax levy division
- X replies to XAlthough the number can be spoofed best thing to do is call that number back The number does belong to the IRS But who's to say who's using it
- X replies to JPThe iRS does call citizens I've received calls about someone using my SSN as their Company tax ID
- DrewRecieved the same call and voicemail as others listed above. Did not answer and called back the number provided. When I did, and waited on hold for about 30 minutes, I was told that the call was a mistake and a number tied to anohter person. they appologized and removed my name. I asked her if the IRS would ever ask for SSN over the phone and she said yes, with two conditions. 1) Typically they send a letter first, and 2) they provide a case/reference number so they can look you up first. The SSN is used to verify who you are. However, she also told me if you get a call you are suspicious about to call the main number and give them the reference number as they can tell you what is going on. Anyway, sounds like it could be a scam, but if you ahve recieved previous noticies, I would follow up asap.
- LauraThis is actually a legit IRS number. You can find it on the website.
I called the IRS - a different number to see if it was legit. They told it me it was a legit collections number for the IRS. They put me through to both personal & business accts where I found out there was nothing wrong with my accts. Finally they directed me to collections where they took the reference no and saw that they had called the wrong phne number. But it was really from the IRS. If I had called the number directly and put in my IEN, I probably could have found this out in much less than the over 1 hr it took after being transferred from place to place. Oh well. Glad they weren't trying to reach me! - TiredGirl

- TheresaVery pissed off right now. I know this number is the IRS and I do know that I need to contact them but their customer service absolutely stinks !! This is the second time I have tried to call them. The first time I was on hold almost 15 minutes and decided to hang up. This time I am working while my call is still on hold waiting for customer service and my time meter reads that I have been on hold 33:55 minutes.. How the heck are we suppose to get in touch with someone if they are too dang busy to take our call !! Do they only have one or two representatives !!! This is total BS !!!

- PeggyYes. This is a legit call from the IRS. I had something from 4 years ago that I never knew about. This was the first I had heard. There were no letters. Don't think because you didn't get a letter you are not responsible for the information they need.
You can avoid having to put your SS# or EIN number in by calling the main number 800-829-1040.
Don't ignore. It is usually a very old issue, typically even an error that needs to be followed up on.
Be patient. It is a LONG wait and will require paperwork to get resolved but it needs to be resolved.- Caller: IRS

- RAI got scammed. Someone had left a message to call the IRS at phone number 800-829-3903. I called the number, which was the IRS and waited for 30 minutes to talk to someone. When I finally did talk to someone from the IRS, they informed me it was a scam. She said the IRS will never call and leave a message, it will always come in the form of a letter in the mail.
- johnIt is the IRS - they are withholding 15% of settlement we are receiving from Federal Government due to past year tax battles we have not yet won, and they sent us a letter to tell us when we would receive the settlement check and how much they were holding out of it and they listed this info:
Internal Revenue Service
Federal Payment Levy Program
Stop 686
PO Box 57
Bensalem, PA 19020
800-829-3903
PURPOSE: Tax Levy
Then it gave TIN Num: TOP Trace Num: Acct Num: etc. and all info was correct.
Funny part is that I have called them numerous times and each time sat on hold for over an hour, so I am definitely wondering how others commenting in this forum were ever able to talk with anyone.
Good Luck- Caller: IRS

- MSG replies to HeatherYes, this is the IRS. You may have received a warning call from the IRS and thought that it was a hoax, however it isn't . 1800-829-3903 is a legitimate phone number with the IRS. You may have not received any type of certification letter from the IRS, However again I advised you to contact the IRS before they place a lien against your property or take over your bank accounts. It happened to us.

- RAY replies to Sandra TXHey i got a message from a couple of guys with a very thick indian accant claiming to be from the irs and that they were going to arrest me etc. If i did not make a payment on outstanding tax and that the police and irs enforcement was waiting down the street. So as i caught on to their scam i played along and really made them feel like dumb in the end.. Remember that the irs will never i mean never call you unless you request a call...
- How? replies to Chris| 1 replyIf the number is on the IRS website, how is it a scam?
- BigA replies to How?I believe GW has said it very clearly. Since numbers can be spoofed you have no idea who is really calling. The IRS will send you letters first. Also that link for the IRS that was posted 6 years ago is dead. The person you are replying to also posted 6 years ago.
- orahthey never called they sent a letter
