- ElvisSo I got the call also. Claiming to be from the IRS and so on and so forth. They gave me a reference number, a call back number and a time frame to call back. I offered no information, and when I called the IRS back from the number that was listed on the web site, they had no information about the call. However, a few days later I got a notice from the IRS requesting a back dated return, the letter had the same reference number that they gave me on the phone, I called the number and discussed the return. I then asked about the call, she said that the collections dept does make outgoing calls and will ask for a TIN for ID. I guess the bottom line with my experience is that this was the real thing. I would not give any info over the phone to the first call, but make suren that you contact the IRS directly, lets face if they were able to bring down Capone, they can take you down too.
- Caller: IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- CJFWe are constantly getting collection calls for everyone in our family with the same last name, then I got this call, they asked for my husband who wasn't home and told the guy I was his wife and what was it about. He wouldn't tell me, he would only talk to my husband. This would have to be a scam since both of our names appear on the tax return, wouldn't I be privy to discussing the matter? It's probably just another collection agency giving us bogus information. And I just recently filed a complaint with the FTC on a collection agency that kept calling us over one of our son's debts, so they might be retaliating.
- Caller: Unknown - they say the IRS
- LYNNSubject was calling regarding a tax problem and needed to discuss the issue tonight. I started to give information -- accidently gave my SSN # -- they are really good at what they do. Then he asked me for my birth date and that's when I knew something was wrong.... his accent was quite strong and foreign sounding. I hesitated in giving him my date of birth and he said he would hang up if i didn't answer him within 10 seconds.... then I knew for sure, it was a scam -- possibly the from another country. I then called the FBI and they told me to send in all the information I had on them directly to their field office
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ANY ONE RECEIVING A CALL FROM THIS NUMBER -- REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY TO THE FBI OR IRS and give as many details as possible. (caller ID shows "out of area"- Caller: said they were from IRS
- leslie| 1 replythey called and said they were the irs, said to punch in you rsocial secutiryt number...of course the irs does not ask that..this must be a scam, want it blocked
- Caller: IRS
- Papaw replies to leslieI received a call from this number as well and it turned out to be very ligit. They left a case # and I called back on my landline and they asked what company I was calling about. I told them the case number and they told me what they were calling about - a company I had sold 9 years ago and now they went under and owed taxes. I told them I sold the company 9 years ago and they told me to disregard the call. They did not ask any personal info and already had my information.
- Chris| 1 replyI received a call just like others have described. I didn't answer it because caller ID said "no number." The message that was left told me to call the IRS and gave me the (obviously legitimate) IRS number as well as a "case number." The message also told me to call back at the end of the business day (8am-8pm) but I received the call after 9pm. I have no issues with the IRS (that I know of). I found this site through IRS.gov and felt it would be helpful to others:

I'll start to worry if I get official mail from the IRS.- Caller: Claims to be the IRS
- Vicki replies to Jeff| 3 repliesWell, I can't tell by your postings if this is legit or not to be honest. I heard somewhere that the IRS Will NOT call you on the phone asking for info.
- kurtjust rec'd the exact same message as indicated above. the number is a real number and it does reach the IRS. the IRS, however, had no record of having called us and their were no problems with our account. seems like many of you might be right that the call itself is a scam, but the number is legit. i will now be on the lookout for the "follow up" call. i even wondered if i was really talking to the IRS, but after they asked several questions about me, i asked them to tell me more about me, like where i worked, etc., and they were able to do so.
- SteveThis is a legitimate, though poorly designed computer system used by the IRS to try to locate and collect money owed. I have been called twice (once on cell and once at home) and I owed no taxes. The system apparently is not good at matching phone numbers to accounts so it is knowingly calling innocent tax payers and causing concern. I was on hold 70 minutes in total before finally getting a person who could pull up the record and confirm it was for a person that was not me. I would ignore them unless you owe taxes.
- Caller: IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- MikeI can't say 100% if it's a scam, but this is what happened:
I received a call indicating it was very important I call the IRS back by end of business regarding a tax levy. This seems odd as it is August and I paid my taxes in April (I am a CPA and use another independent CPA to do my taxes each year). Also, I know the IRS usually contacts taxpayers by US mail.
When I called the number, I was immediately asked for my social security number. When I did not input it, I was transferred to an operator, who then transferred me to another person. Supposedly, they had the "wrong number" as they were looking for a "Mr. Beauchamp" that owned "AXA Management." The entire call was just weird... the second operator asked for my social security number to "compare it to their records" a couple of times, then wanted my address, my name and my date of birth. If it really were the IRS and it was a legit wrong number, there is no reason they would have asked for any of this information.
Like I said, I am not sure who this is really, but beware of what info you give out.... this just seems really fishy.- Caller: IRS??
- TOOK123 replies to BillYES BUT THEY FIRST TRY TO GET YOUR NAME AND SOCIAL WOULDN'T YOU THINK IT WAS LEGIT CALL THAT THEY WOULD ASK FOR TAX ID NUMBER NOT YOUR SOCIAL ....!!!!! THINK ABOUT IT THERE IS PEOPLE OUT THERE TRYING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OLDER CITIZENS IT TIME TO GET THE WORD OUT BEWARE

- T. NewmanWe have been getting tel . calls from an unknown, unidentified number. Today the message was left to call this number by the end of business day, with a ref. number. They called twice back to back with the same automated information left on our machine.
After reading this information online about this number possibly being a scam and them wanting to know our tad ID's, we never did call back this number.- Caller: Says its from IRS
- Matt replies to ChrisI believe that this is a scam as well. I gave them my biz ID and then they asked me my social security. Why would they have that already....
Everyone needs to report this to the BBB and Attorney General of your state. This is BS. - Matt replies to DUHNever give your personal info over the phone. I've talked to the IRS before they haven't asked me my SS # before. Have them send you a letter to verify....don't fall into identity thelf.
- qmanwell first off i got a private call at around 8:04 in the morning. i answer and said hello and no one answered. i then got another private call number at 8:40 am. This time it was a woman claiming to be from the automated something from the irs. she asked me if i knew i had a federal tax return issue and i said yes. she wanted me to give her my social and i said no. she then asked if she gave me my last four would i give her my first five. i was like no. i figured they should already have it and i said to her that i'm not giving it over the phone. she gave me a case number but i felt that if they wanted me the should write me like they always do. furthermore it was before 9am.. i felt like it was a scam.. i bing ed the number and now i'm reading all of this stuff here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- MaryI received a call from a "Mrs. McMahan" purporting to be from the IRS asking me to give her my SSN for identification purposes. I have exchanged correspondence with the IRS and she said she was calling about this and described the correspondence. I did not give her my SSN and am now on hold with the IRS to report the incident. I suspect (strongly) that this was not a legitimate call. I also wonder how she would have any information about me. That makes me wonder about security with the IRS.
- GW replies to BillI wish I could answer every one of these comments--clearly a lot of confusion and that's what the scammers want. It's even possible they are posting on sites such as this one to further confuse matters. The KEY is that they WANT you to look up the number on the IRS site or a site like this and see it is legit. Then when they call you back you think you're really talking to the IRS and so you are now willing to give them the information. But they aren't really calling from the IRS. If YOU Call the IRS what have they lost? Nothing--one out of thousands of people they're trying to scam.
Even if you think those of us saying this is a scam don't belive it--fine! But that doesn't change the fact that when someone calls you you do NOT know if they are legit ... and you should never, ever, ever give our your social security number or other personal identifyers over the phone! - GW replies to ChrisJust because they leave a legit numbher on your answering maching does NOT mean they actually called form that number. This is 100% a scam. NEVER give your soc sec number out over the phone unless you initiated the call! Even then, usually the last four digits are sufficient for identification.
