- eblick replies to JeffPlease let me know what happened after you pursued this
phone call. Other websites list the number as a suspicious
one. Others, can't tell but look genuine. I guess best thing
to do is call IRS directly.
In your phone call, were you given a case number as they did
me?
Why call on a Saturday? besides, normally IRS will send you
information by mail.
Thanks, - Katdoh| 1 replyI got a call at 5:30 pm (after business hours)on my business line telling me that it was the IRS-- either there was a balance due or some other issue.I started to give him a cell number to call and he said it was a computer generated call and he wouldn't be able to call another number. He asked me for the last digits of our tax ID number. (Wouldn't the IRS have that?) I didn't give it to him.He said his name was Jim McCauley and gave me his ID number and a case number, and said for us to call this number back by Friday.
- morganI got an email that looked like it came from the IRS stating that they had calulated my taxes and I had a refund due. When I clicked the button on the page it took me to a pop up in which if I gave them my credit card info they would immediatly apply the refund. This looks very official with links to the real IRS site. I figured the whole thing was a scam and closed it all. My computer shortly after developed several trojan viruses and then my phone rang with a message from the IRS to call that number. It was like that movie the ring...I think the whole thing is a pretty sophisticated scam. Be careful and do not give out any info online or on the phone.

- May| 1 replyI received a phone call from this # on 5/20/08. She said she needed a copy of my 2290 for several different years. No money owed. She did not sound IRS nor did she offer her ID # and say this is MRS at the beginning of her conversation. She sounded like she was from another country. I asked her to give me the Fed ID # for the form that she needed. She would not. My husband walked in, she said she would give him the Fed ID #....she did not. Asked us for out B-Days, we would not give them out. But she asked us if these were the correct dates. So she did have our B-Days. She also called back 2 other times to repeat the same conversation.
She would put me on hold and them come back. We told her to send us a certified letter requesting document 2290. She seemed a bit concerned when I told her that I would speak to my CPA about this matter.- Caller: none
- Heather| 1 replyGot a call from an unknown caller ID. Message stated it was the IRS and I needed to return the call by Friday. I did, because I've had problems with the IRS in the past and wanted to make sure there was nothing more, and stupidly punched in my SSN, went through the whole English or Spanish, etc., rigamarole, and gave it to the woman who eventually answered the phone after waiting on hold for nearly an hour. I started to worry after hanging up and Googled the number. Fortunately, the number comes up as an actual contact number for the IRS (I don't think that even the best of cons can get irs.gov to list their phone number).

- John| 1 replyGot a call at around 7:30 pm. She asked if I had time to discuss a tax issue, her name was Mrs. Thomasello from the "IRS". I told her we had guests and that I needed to return her call. She gave me this 800 number and a case reference number. Please call between 8 and 8. It all seemed legit so I called back the next day. After a few menues, the system wanted me to enter my SS#, not the case reference number. I didn't enter it, was put on hold for over 30 minutes and finally hung up. I asked the woman on the phone if I would receive something in the mail regarding this matter and she said it was on it's way. I never got anything and haven't heard from them again.
- Brian| 1 replySame with me. Got a call around 5:30 requesting a call back before COB. Was on hold for approx 35 minutes. Turns out that it was the IRS, and I gave the case #. They were looking for the business that had my number previously. The attendant updated the database, and that was it.

- uhoh replies to JeffIt is the IRS. If you google the phone number using 1-800-829-3903 you will see.
- JP replies to Memphis TN| 5 repliesHave received this same phone call multiple times. Did return the phone call once just to see what they would ask when reference number was punched in. Totally automated & first thing they requested was Social Security #. Naturally we hung up, but unfortunately returning that call kept us on their "sucker" list. We just delete the calls from our voice mail. Total scam, IRS doesn't call citizens.
- J&D replies to BrianIts the IRS just call and wait and if you don't think its the IRS call the main Tel, # and it will take you to that same #.
- chaliellenA call came in from an unknown number on my caller id at 3:29pm, I checked voicemail and got the message which stated they were the IRS and to call them back before close of business today. Since I am in good standing with the IRS, I found this call suspicious. I dialed in to see what would happen and the automated message came on. It went thru the spanish / english request menu then on to where it request you to put in your social security or tax id; then it said to note there is a fee for something then I hung up.
