Received two phone calls that showed up as "Private number", one at 8:20am and the next at 8:28am. A voicemail was left at 8:28am with a woman's voice stating my name and to call #1-800-829-3903, between the hours of 8am to 8pm. She said to call back on Monday, Nov 7th and ignore the identification prompts, wait for live representative and give the case number. I immediately dialed this number after I got my message about 9:30am, and there is nothing but silence on the other end. I don't know what to make of it...but very strange that she has my name and number.

I called an old IRS# that I had and it did route me back to this number 800-829-3903, so it was a valid IRS call. Unusual that they are now making calls to taxpayers. The case number given was also valid. So if you have an unfiled tax return or delinquent account, you may get a call from the IRS.

Wanted to give everyone a follow-up...

I got a message from 800-829-3903 which asked me to call back between 8am-8pm with a case number. and I did not get any letter from IRS. I called and provide my personal info. But the lady who received my call checked my tax account and the case number, said I did not have anything open and nothing wrong with my account. I just explained the reason why I called. she did not anything about. that is it.

received a call on my cell phone saying they were from the IRS and I had to call back by the end of business today.
I get at this time of year, this would make many people nervous IF their taxes had already been filed.
Since I have not and never would have given the IRS my cell phone number. Decided to check here first.  guessing its another scam.

It is the IRS.  It is a computer dialing program to contact tax payers who have issues that need to be resolved.  Normally the last action before a levy or lien is filed.

This is not a scam people. My bank accounts were levied due to back taxes that I'm fighting. The notice I received in the mail about the levy from the IRS  uses ACS  in levy collections. 800-829-3903 was the number on the form. This is legit.

    U R WARNED!
Call came in about 8:30pm.  Caller id said private number.  Left urgent message saying this is the IRS and I needed to call 800-829-3903 back before midnight.  Well this IS the number to the IRS, but the office is closed.  The IRS doesn't ask you to call during the hours they are closed...duh...first clue!  Next, they also send a notice in the mail.  If the IRS calls you, they know your SS # and everything about you...you don't have to tell them a thing.  If you do, you are telling a SCAMMER, so BEWARE!

WORKS LIKE THIS...You get a private call so you don't answer...they leave a message saying it is the IRS and you need to call immediately...then you call the IRS # and don't get through because they are, duh, closed...you look up the number to verify that it is truly the IRS number...then the so called IRS (aka, scammer) calls you back the next day (again caller id says "private")...you answer thinking, well I verified the number so this really must be the IRS, so you proceed to give them all your information.  YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

I am suspicious that posts here saying that this is not a scam have been PLANTED BY THE SCAMMERS THEMSELVES!....Previous post (U R WARNED 11 May 2012)  describes this scam perfectly.   Thanks!

This seems like a mix of real & scam calls spoofing with no caller ID & hoping someone will answer & give private ID info. I'd say just beware, know your tax debt status & only give info on calls you initiate to the IRS.

I received an 'end of business' request voice mail from a 'Private Number' near the end of the day. I do have tax issues, both business & personal, but I know the status of each one and am already in communication with the IRS on a regular basis and there's no reason they'd call me like this.

Again, I repeat, know your tax debt status & only give info on calls you initiate to the IRS. That seems like the end of that to me.

Just received a call from this number this morning.  Knowing that the IRS sends mail prior to any phone calls (phone calls are very rare) I called the number to play the game.  After holding for about 20 minutes a man answered, I gave him the reference number left on my voice mail.  First of all they called my cell phone and were supposedly looking for my husbands business.  I verified that I was him and the idiot on the other end of the phone just kept going.  Obviously I am not a man!!!  He then proceeded to ask for my tax id number and I said to him, well you already have it and then....surprise, surprise, he hung up on me.  Be careful people, the IRS DOES NOT CALL YOU without sending mulitiple letters.

a.) It is the IRS Account Collection Department
b.) Visit the IRS Website on the following link and read the numbers at bottom of page...
    http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=100551,00.html

Notes: "Contact us toll-free at 1-800-829-7650 or 1-800-829-3903 to resolve the issue by paying the tax bill, entering into an installment agreement, or proposing an Offer in Compromise. Please do not contact the FMS, OPM, SSA, or any other federal agency."

As you see two numbers, call the first one, 7650 and if you hung up on the representative on 3903 or asked for any remarks to be stored, the rep that answers when dialing 7650 quotes them precisely.

Thus, there are two numbers used during collections, both are noted on the IRS site link mentioned here, one is the number you guys think is a scam, and either can be called to access same data.

That said, the system of you giving name, social, and dob to the caller, without them providing proof that they are looking at your account is a poor system.  Unfortunately, it is the system they use and if you buck it, your account stay in trouble and eventually action or levy occurs.

There is no good way to get them to quote data from your account to make you comfortable.
Worse, anyone could propose to be the IRS, ask the same info and have what they need to assume your identity.

In conclusion, the number is authentic and if you call it and give your info, you are talking to the IRS.
If someone calls you, it is suspicious, but you can hang up and call them back through either of these two numbers to insure you are calling the IRS.
If you don't, your problem can get much worse.
If you call either of those numbers back and the IRS does not have an issue with your account, then the inbound telemarketing call could have been a scam, but this number, in particular is not.

    Verify it yourself...
Contact us toll-free at 1-800-829-7650 or 1-800-829-3903 to resolve the issue by paying the tax bill, entering into an installment agreement, or proposing an Offer in Compromise. Please do not contact the FMS, OPM, SSA, or any other federal agency.

It is a IRS Phone number for Small Business...it is the Levy department. When I called it, it asked for my SSN and then gives you a series of prompts. I hit 6 because I do not have a small business and it took me to the right person. Evidently they had my number in the system for a small business that was in trouble and after I talked to them they cleared my number from their list.

I received a call on my answering machine from 1-800-829-3903 stating I needed to call back by 5:00 p.m. the same day.  I called and the number seemed to be from the IRS, but the IRS "agent" had a foreign accent.  I refused to give him my SSN, then he said the call was intended for someone else.  I made a trip to my local IRS office and was told that the IRS always contacts a person by mail, not over the phone. The local agent reviewed my account and I was assured that the call wasn't from the IRS.
