- muducketI recieved a call yesterday,I was given the # there systems are down for the moment ,and i called back later, and the system is still down.
they still told me to call back.
If they called once they will call again,,i havent seen a swat team or irs collections van anywhere close ,so for right now Im not concerned. - RGarcia replies to JPI just got the same call from an agent called "Miss Turner". She ask that for confirmation I give her my social security and bank information for verification. She gave me athe (800) 829-7650 to call back. Knowing that the IRS will NEVER ask you for this (they already have it - if they were to call you) and will send letters first: I told her that we ran a private investigator firm and to please wait for 45 seconds to do an immediate phone line reverse trace to identify the physical source of the call. She IMMEDIATETLY hang up the phone.
I wish this will work as well with those 6-7pm telemarketers of online pharmacies that pester us daily!!! - RGarcia replies to JPI just got the same call from an agent called "Miss Turner". Said it was the Internal Revenue Service and gave me a reference number. When I searched within irs.gov for the number it came up with the following page.

We have a small business and have some tax issues, but this looks like a standard procedure for the IRS and the State of California to get us to voluntarily call in. Until I get a letter or talk to my accountant, I'm not going to waste time on hold for a 'trained monkey' to try and suck us dry. Must be nice to work for AIG eh? I certainly could stand to be bailed out as well.- Caller: Unknown
- DUH| 1 replyYou people are morons... I'll bet you all have one thing in common:
THE IRS WANTS TO TALK TO YOU! DUH...
This ia 100% legitimate. If you don't believe it check out this web page: http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=108342,00.html
(The number is listed at the bottom of the page)- Caller: Internal Revenue Service
- Call type: Valid
- aggravated JohnGot a call and discovered that it correlated with a letter I received from Department of the Treasury Financial Management Service Alabama. It is my belief that this is a collection agency and may, again MAY, be related to the US Dept of Education as my received notice did provide a TIN. They apparently got my number from a database. I have more information on the database. There is reason to believe that the database company is liable and we may be able to collectively file suit if you can prove the relationship with the company. The database service says they only use public records and cannot change anything in their database. The process is is full of flaws and people are getting harassed. They called to my cell.
- Call type: Debt collector
- MikeyMessage left on voice mail: This is the IRS, you need to call 800-829-3903 and leaves a file number. Within a minute, another call comes under under 546-751-9643. This happens several times a day.
- Sandra TX| 2 repliesOn 10/22/2009 had call from blocked number at 6:30PM. Caller, Mr Egar, said he was IRS, then wanted me to verify my SS# and more info. I refused to verify anything or give any info and told him I have no way of knowing if he really is from IRS. He told me to call back next day between 8AM and 8PM to get a problem straightened out. He did not give me any case # or any other info as to the nature of the "problem".
I informed my lawyer and gave him the number.
He said IRS does NOT call people without first sending a letter that you must sign for. He is currently checking it out.
I do not know at this moment whether it was legit or not.
Will report back here when I do know.- Caller: IRS?
- trapper replies to Sandra TXThis number called my home had the wrong name I usually get calls from debt collectors for this name and call back to have the number taken off their list so i decided to so the same. I work as a fraud claims officer for an airline so let me assure you the rule of thumb is to NEVER give out your own personal info to any company or collection agency even in the event that you are clarifying a mistake this is how toy GET into a scammes system. In this case the automates system said *they* are the IRS and then asked for a SS# to proceed. This is more that suspicious it is leading you down to ID theft. Do NOT give your SS# or your business ID #. The IRS does NOT call from an anonymous number let alone call with an automated message. They have procedures in place. Call the local office during office hours and talk with a rep and give them this info. Or go online and leave then a scam alert email so they may counter this. I bet you money this is a TEST RUN to see how many people they can get closer to tax season scammers will go wider and net more people.
BEWARE!!!! - A1The 800-829-3903 number may really be the IRS because it is listed on several IRS Official Web sites as one of their collection numbers, but the person who initally called and left a message may be calling as a prank getting people to call the IRS in a panic and wait forever to talk to someone to clear it up. I called and they told me that it was strange because unless they sent me a letter first, or unless they gave me a specific agent's number I wouldn't be getting a phone call - especially to what the person on the phone referred to as a main number.
- NOLAThey left an automated message on the voicemail. It said to call this number which is an IRS number and it said they would leave a case number but no case number was left.
Maybe the scammers are leaving these messages for people to warm them up for the follow up call where they actually get you on the line. They leave the message with the legitemate IRS number and when they call you back you assume that yes it is the IRS they already left me one message.
They then proceed to get you to give away your social security number and birthdate and all the info they need for identity theft.- Caller: ?
- cbmWe received a recorded message with the 800 number and a case number and to call back during business hours. This was on Saturday so we couldn't call til Monday. I just hung up from talking with them. It is the IRS and the number is legitimate. Fortunately for us though, it was for the man whose house we just bought.....and not for us. What I don't get is how they got our phone number associated with this property and his name. He is deceased, which I told them and they said they would note it on their records and sorry for the inconvenience. Problem solved.
- BeckyThe IRS will NEVER NEVER NEVER call you out of the blue and request information.....they already have your social security and date of birth. The ONLY ONLY ONLY time you give them your social security number is when YOU have initiated the call for what ever reason and they need to look up your account. I have been a CPA for over 10 years and have NEVER had the IRS call like this. THIS IS A SCAM...SCAM....SCAM....SCAM.....SCAM...SCAM...SCAM.....
If you get a letter from them, there will be a reference number on it. They can look up your account with the reference number..... - Bill| 5 repliesThe phone # is not fraud. It is a collection division of the IRS. Simply do some research instead of guessing or assuming that it is fraud. The phone number is listed all over the IRS website, here's just one location http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=100551,00.html
- Chris| 1 replyI just received a call on my cell phone from 800-829-3903. She gave me her name and case #. I told her my husband who is a CPA handles all our tax information and she said he could call the number by tomorrow. She didn't even know my last name and I have never put my cell on any tax papers. Called my husband and he said it was a SCAM. The IRS will never call you for information they send requests in the mail!
- Caller: 800-829-3903
- Chris replies to Bill| 2 repliesYes that number is listed on the IRS website but the call you received is a SCAM!
- i_owed_back_taxes| 1 replyIt is the IRS. It is legitimate. I owed back taxes. I didn't respond to the levy notices. In my case the call from this number was a last-ditch "Hey, we're about to levy your bank account" call that I appreciated.
- Caller: IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- i_owed_back_taxes replies to i_owed_back_taxes(But the CPA's advice above is accurate: caller ID can be faked, so the ONLY ONLY ONLY time you might provide your SSN [if you don't have a 'reference number'] is if *you* are the one initiating the call.)
- CJ| 1 reply800 829 3903 is a legitimate Internal Revenue Service phone #. I had to call this # based on a letter I received from them with regard to a prior tax year. I was on hold for 15 minutes, but an agent did answer and it is clearly the real thing. Anyone telling you it is a scam is mistaken.
- Caller: Internal Revenue Service
- Call type: Debt collector
- Akil replies to CJThe IRS would never give you a one-day deadline to return a call. They are required to give you sufficent notice to resolve any tax matter, adn would have already sent you a letter weeks before calling you. The idea of the scam is not for you to call back, but to catch you when you answer the phone. Leaving a legitimate phone number only builds your confidence, i.e. something you can verify. However, when you call the IRS you will get nowhere with the case number. But you will get a phone call at another time from the scammer and may reveal information, now that you think the matter is legitimate.
