- GrantMy parents house got a call from this number today because I used to live there, and they were reporting a suspicious transaction of $1000+ on my card (which I did not make). I called this number back and gave them my last 4 digits and verified my name and address, and my card expiration date. The lady said they would report fraudulent activity on my card for me and put a hold on my card. I called visa and they redirected me to the 1st financial bank after hours number, who then verified with me that my card had been reported as having fraudulent activity, and 1800-830-8574 was the number of the institution that reported this. A hold had indeed been placed on my card too. So I do believe that this is a legitimate number, but based upon other posts and the fact that scams are getting more and more clever on a day to day basis, I kind of wish I had not called that number back and instead immediately called 1st financial and directly reported my card number as stolen.
- DANI ALSO RECEIVED A CALL FROM THIS NUMBER. I USED MY PAYPAL DEBIT CARD QUITE A FEW TIMES TODAY. I NORMALLY DON'T USE IT THAT MUCH. THEY ARE CHECKING TO MAKE SURE YOUR CARD ISN'T STOLEN. THEY ARE A LEGIT COMPANY. THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE COMPLAINING HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. THEY ARE DEFINATELY DOING THERE JOBS.
- MJHI have many calls asking to verify calls on a check card or credit account for a "mumbled name." The message said they were from PCNB. I got so fed up with the calls on my voicemail I called back on the 800-830-8574 number and it never even said PCNB but just a "credit card security company" and wouldn't verify further. They denied having called my number. I wouldn't give these people the time of day, if the company name (e.g. Citibank) doesn't appear in the Caller ID then it's a scam. Beware of giving any personal information over the phone!

- BWSThis is a legitimate call. I received a voicemail today from 1-800-830-8574. It was an automated call. Here is the exact transcript:
"This is a message for (MY NAME WAS HERE). We are calling from Paypal Security to verify recent transactions on your debit Mastercard. Please return our call at 800-830-8574 and any representatives can assist you. We are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Thank you."
I then immediately called PayPal and spoke with a representative. She told me that they did indeed call at the time specified. Once I told the representative that I checked my PayPal account and no fraudulent activities were present, she added my name to a list so that the card would be reactivated again. I didn't even have to call back the 800 number.
If you're unsure, simply call the number on the back of your debit/credit card and ask about it. It turns out that there is tighter security in place with PayPal. If you there are several small amounts charged to the card, then this will bring up a red flag because scammers will test your card with small transactions. I actually used my card for two $1.00 charges when looking up my credit report. This is what set the security measures into motion.
I hope this helps. - DLet me start by saying that these people are VERY MUCH LEGIT! I had missed their call this morning and got a message from them saying that they wanted to confirm recent transactions on my Chevy Chase Debit card. I was very suspicious and called my bank (Chevy Chase Bank) to ask them if they knew anything about it. The representative at the bank said the number was legit, that this their "security department" who verifies transactions that are out of the normal spending pattern. He said that if I didn't call them back, they would temporarily suspend my card since they would assume that an unauthorized user had gotten hold of it. He then transferred me to the 800-830-8574 number and I got a voice recording asking me for the number where I had received their call and the last 4 digits of my card number, and the voice also named the recent transactions on my card and asked me to verify them. And that was it. If you're worried though, you should call your bank first to put your mind at ease!
- lisaYes, I got a legitimate call from this number today. I had an automated call from another number a few minutes prior to this and I hung up and called Wells Fargo directly myself. They verified that they had flagged suspecious activity and we closed the account. A few minutes later I got a call from this number and told them what had alreay happend. They verified my address and the fraudulant charges and told me they just needed to clear things at their end even though I had already closed the account. They did not ask for any personal info. I wonder how Wells Fargo even knew to question these charges? Of the 5 charges they were holding 3 were actually mine (automatic monthly payments to charities)and two were for hundreds of dollars at WalMart and BestBuy made today...those were the ones I didn' make. I don't know how they do this but I'm glad they did! I only with they had caller ID that showed Wells Fargo instead of unknown...they leave themselves open to suspecion but it's easy to hang up and call yourself.
- backtobusinessJust got a call from this number, said they were calling to let me know
that there have been activities on my credit/debit card and to stay on
the line for the next available representative. I held for a few seconds
and hung up. Based on the comments here, i'm inclined to think that it
is a scam because i have no credit/debit cards with Wells Fargo. - normal| 1 replyGot the call. Called # on back of credit card to verify. Confirmed the number and transferred me to them. Verified my activity and hung up. You guys are a bunch of paranoid freaks! These people are trying to protect you. All it takes is a little investigation to find the truth. But I guess it's more fun to post scary "BEWARE" signs on this website!
- worriedInteresting that this number is getting mixed reviews. I got the call (my assistant). Said from paypal trying to verify recent activity. (I recently made an overseas purchase, so thought might be for real)
Instead of calling them back, I called paypal cust. svc. they said that no one was on my account, and no one tried to contact me. They said it was not paypal calling.
Of course, sometimes it depends on what cust. svc. rep you get, but she insisted that they use no 3rd party servie to verify things like this. - RobI received a call from this number stating it was PayPal Security - I stumbled upon this website & decided to call the number on my PayPal debit card to be sure that it's a legit company.
The PayPal customer service Rep told me that it is, indeed, a legit call - this company monitors purchases for fraudulent activity.
This is actually a good thing - I didn't know that PayPal went to this much effort to protect my money.
So - from what I'm told, this IS a legit number.- Call type: Unwanted
- concernedMEMBER replies to Dave| 4 repliesIsn't it illegal for a company to misrepresent themselves? They left a message on my machine saying they were PAYPAL. I still have that message recorded, and will be contacing the authorities. Well Fargo will be getting in a lot of trouble, according to my brother-in-law who is an internet security attorney.
- KATHIE| 1 replyThe call came in at my mothers place. She is in assisted living with alzheimers. Someone spoke to her and gave the name Eric J Howst. Mom said he was angry with her for not giving him the information he wanted. There was a reference to Wells Fargo. Mom was not sure but very upset by it. I called the number from the Caller ID and the recorded message said it was card services verifying a fradulent transaction on your credit card and to enter the last 4 digits. I hung up. It did not say a specific bank or credit card. We have all heard not to give information out to callers. I will check the bank in person to see if there is any thing going on.

- Kevin replies to Dave| 2 repliesI just received a message from this phone number stating that it was Paypal security wanting to confirm recent transactions on my Paypal Premier Debit/Mastercard. I immediately went online to research the number and found this web site. I then called the number on the back of my Paypal card and asked the Paypal agent to confirm the 1-800-830-8574 number and tell me whether it was really a number for Paypal security. The agent confirmed that the phone number is indeed just that.
I then called 1-800-830-8574 and the computer has you confirm the last four digits on your paypal card. It then asks you to confirm the last 4-5 purchases on your Paypal card. IT IS NOT A SCAM!!!!!
What is up with all of the paranoia about this phone number? All of the people who are saying this is a scam couldn't be more wrong. If you have a Paypal debit card and you get a call from this number, you really should call it back to confirm recent transactions. Otherwise, they'll probably freeze your account until they get hold of you. - Heather replies to DaveTHIS IS COMPLETELY LEGIT.
If you make a large purchase, you can guarantee this protective service will track it and make sure you actually did make this purchase. it seems to be through PNC which was the case with me. I was afraid but calling PNC, they verified the information with me. - Jacob DelphThis is legit. Before I called the number back (they told me to call 800-830-8574, and I think the exact number varies by whichever company hires these [***]), I called my bank and asked if they used a third party to help identify fraudulent transactions. My bank is San Diego County Credit Union. My bank said that they did hire this company and that the call is legit. Further, my bank told me that they will de-activate the card if I do not confirm the transactions. Needless to say, this pissed me off. This is the same racket that our government uses. They tell you "be very afraid of the terrorists" and then they getcha by the balls. These scumbags operate the same way. This isn't about fraud protection. This about moving us one step closer to the police state, in which we have to ask Big Daddy for permission to wipe our own [***]. I digress...
I think they said their organization's name was CardServices. The entire message they left (at 7AM, no less) was automated. After my bank confirmed that they do use this third party, I called the number back.
When I called, again, everything was automated. They already knew my phone number, asked me if my name was [my real name] (the pronunciation was actually quote good, though, I do have a simple name).
Next, they read-off three different transactions I HAD indeed made in the last week or so, the amounts, and they provided information about the charge, .e.g, "This charge was from a fast-food restaurant" or "This charge was from a charitable organization".
So, everything is legit, but you can REST ASSURED that some scam artists will take advantage of this and call you with the SAME ROUTINE, but they'll be stealing your information.
RULE TO LIVE BY: Don't ever tell them anything that they don't already know about you. Let them do the talking and YOU do the confirming.- Caller: CardServices

- Rich in Utah replies to FrezI had two of these calls (from different numbers) in very short order after two failed online transactions with the same Wells Fargo card. Because I don't answer unknown numbers, both were live-person please-call-us messages. In both cases, I called the customer service number on the back of the card, and they quickly confirmed the calls and handled the issues.
Like Frez, though, I still think it's in everyone's best interest to be careful every time, so I will continue to exercise my option to call a known telephone number instead of giving my info to an unknown caller. - GeneI got this call from this 800 number claiming to be from Paypal. They verified my account activity with correct values. What happens is if there is an account activity over $200, Paypal's credit department looks into it. Itunes tried to charge me $206 for I don't know what but it was denied. The people on the phone recommended I cancel this card and start a new one. I agreed and that was it. This call was legitamate. I googled it and found this list of people who think it's a scam. But I called Paypal's customer service number right after I hung up and Paypal verified that it WAS their credit department that called and already started the cancellation of my Paypal card to start up a new one. If your credit card company can verify account activity with valid numbers, you should trust them. If you don't, just tell them you'll call their customer service and do it that way.

- SUCKERStupid guys called my parents home, my parents call me all worried so i called the number cause I was worried about "fraudulent charges" I called and like a dumb @SS gave the info they had asked for.
a few days later I have three charges of $75 from some company listing itself as walmrt in Charlotte, FL.
DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER SUPER SCAM.. whoever is posting saying it's not must be part of the scam.
seriously when was the last time you saw someone go out of there way to say it legit? or even a security company go out of their way to post on blogs???
don't be dumb I hope you see this before they get you!!!- Caller: WALMRT CHARLOTTE, FL
- BobI got a call from this number, then called Wells Fargo and they verified that it was in fact a service they use to verify suspicious transactions. Anyway, turns out my card had about 18 fraudulent charges, so I immediately reported it for fraud and got a new card. So the advice to call the card company to verify worked out best for me, as I'd of had to call them anyway.

- SidIt's completely valid, I'm not sure who decided it's a scam. For one they aren't asking for enough personal information to be a scam, they ask for you to verify 4 digits on your card, and your name, then they tell you what the past 5 transactions on your account were and ask you to verify that they are valid. I called paypal to check if this was all fine and they said yes, you can call paypal directly to fix it or the number, but you need to verify one way or the other.
