This is absolutely a SCAM and the rosy messages on this board are probably left by the scammers.  Think about it.  Why are so many people taking the time to look for a message board and post about a number they had a good transaction with???  That didn't turn out to be a scam?

    Have you ever done that???

I got a call from this number that was supposedly from "PayPal Security" to verify some recent transactions.  I called PayPal.  I have no recent transactions.  PayPal said they never called me.  They don't use 3rd party security either.  Enough said.

My experience does NOT square with the other messages on this board, I know they are lying and recommend that no one ever dial this number.

    Confused
An automated message was left on my answering machine requesting a call back to 800-830-8574.  It stated that they were calling from Chevy Chase Bank to verify transactions.  After Googling the number I was skeptical.  I called my local bank branch and was informed that this was a legit call and that I needed to return the call.  I made 5 consecutive purchases yesterday and it alerted higher ups.  Also, one store accidentaly punched in a $1049 transaction instead of a $10.49.  The bank just wanted to verify.  I believe that this number is used for several different banks/businesses to verify transactions that are either large purchases or purchases too close together in time. When in doubt, call the company.  But, this number is legit.  It is automated, but I got a person on the phone by declining one of the charges.

Got this on my voicemail as well to call the company back.  Less than 90 minutes prior to the message, I had made two fairly large purchases online, on Apple.com and Progressive.com, and one at a local restaurant.  I called the number back, they asked for my phone number and first name, which I gave to them, then they said they wanted to verify three purchases I had recently made, and they listed off the exact amounts of the purchases and where they were made and on what card (a Wells Fargo Visa).  I said I did make those purchases and they said that was all they needed to verify.  The company didn't ask me for any information about my credit card or credit card issuer.  I then called Wells Fargo to ensure they did indeed use this company and they confirmed that they do.  She offered me the same Identify Theft Insurance they offer every time I call, which I declined as usual.

This call sounds legit to me- and actually a great service for someone who rarely makes large purchases on her card, I am comforted knowing that Wells Fargo noticed an out-of-the-ordinary purchase.

Oh by the way, I found this message board as someone who was skeptical about the number and wanted some info before I called it.  After reading the messages and then calling the number, I posted because I was at the website already and I guess I like to post on message boards?  LOL just thought I'd respond to "scam watcher" who posted on May 16th.

They were calling on behalf of fidelity to check on recent activity.  I think it's great! I'd rather have them call and check then worry about going through Identity Theft again!!

This isnt a scam, as other have said.  I called, they had my transaction info and purchase amount.  I asked why they had that info, girl said they are a third party company contracted out by several credit card companies and banks to verify transactions.  This service limits the amount of unauthorized transactions, and lost money for these financial institutions.  Do not be weary of these calls, they are providing a service to help save you time and money down the road.  Call was very quick, only took about 2 minutes including the explanation of their services.

Do not let this make you comfortable with these types of calls however.  If you do receive a call that asks for info, do not assume that they are with this company, or are this type of company unless they have very specific account information.

This is a LEGITIMATE number.  I don't know how so many people are saying this is a scam.  Perhaps, there is another number that somehow uses the 8008308574 caller id, to commit fraud.  Anyways, here is exactly how the call went.  After I received a voicemail stating my name and the cc issuer I use, and to call back to verify transactions, I called the number.  Automated system, said thanks for calling back..., we have identified your phone number as xxx-xxx-xxxx is that correct, press 1 (call from the same phone as the one you got your voicemail, it will make it easier).  Then it says they want to verify my last 5 transactions.  Please enter the last 4 digits of your card.  Again, no identity theft issues there.  Then it reads the 4 digits back to you and asks you to press 1 if correct.  Next, it says press 1 if this is xxx xxx and it says your first and last name.  How would they have this if it were a scam?  Next it goes through and asks if x.xx was authorized at a place by you on or around x date and to press 1 if it is legitimate.  You can even press 2 and get more details, and it will read you the EXACT dollar amount, name of the place, and the city location.  You repeat this for 5 transactions, and then it says if you need more info, call the number on the back of your card.  It does NOT give another number to call, it just says call the number on the back.  If this is a SCAM, well, then they already have all your information anyways.  Seriously guys, this number / company is setup for your own protection.

To repeat and sum up.  THE NUMBER (800) 830 8574 IS NOT A SCAM!!!

I just got a call from this number. They put me on hold for a minute and then the guy told me my last 4-5 purchases, one of them a notebook that I bought online last night. He did not ask my name, credit card information or any other personal info. I don't think it is a scam.

This phone number is LEGIT!  It is a card services company used by different banks.  I did a google search on the number and had a site for a Georga Trust bank come up, listing it as a number to report fraud on.  I am in Ireland and used my credit card twice today.  They called me within hours.  I called the number back and rather than typing in the digits to my card, I hit the # sign until I was transferred to someone.  They asked for my phone number and name, then verified purchases on the credit card I had used.

just got a call from my pops who I lived with about six months ago who said he got a call from these guys and inquired about a fraudulent charge, him and I have the same name and bank and they asked for the last four of his card which they stated was not the card in question so he assumed they meant me. I figured this was a little fishy so I called my bank directly and they said that they did have on file one of their 3rd parties trying to contact me over potential fraud, my bank cleared it up for me. sounds legit to me.

I just received a call from this number saying they were from my bank.  They were calling to verify a transaction for $545.xx(I don't remember the change) from Hollister.com.  I have never shopped there, and never will.
They were wanting me to confirm the transaction and asking for the security code on the back.

    NOT A SCAM.

It's a third party security company that just saved me 300 bucks. Someone tried to book a cruise on my checkcard and they caught it immediately. They called me on behalf of PNC bank, so obviously they work for multiple clients.

I received a computer generated call informing me of unusual activity and asking for last four of acct. no..  I hung up and immediately called my bank. The bank did not, and will not ever ask for account information over phone.

Received call and called the 1-888 number on the back of my PNC bank card. After getting through to an operator he connected me with Visa security. I asked the operator after verifying the charges....three total which they had the amount and locations...if the 1800 830 8574 number was correct. She said that the call would have come to them anyway.

I received a call from 1-800-830-8574, regarding excessive or questionable charges on my debit card, which was correct as I attempted a high-cost buys and other high-end transactions days apart. The verification process is basic and not intrusive on personal data; they just confirm data. This is managed by Card Services, a legit company. I spoke to no one, all automated, verified it was me on 5 transactions/attempts, was not up-sold anything. Advised to call my bank directly if there were other issues. This is a good service, since u can be taken to the cleaners if not careful; check our site blog & articles for info. I've been in Banking & Finance for 13years; so rest easy folks. However, i will say always good to be cautious with all personal data. Fraud is rampant out there.

I received a voicemail on 08/14/08, telling me to call 1-800-830-8574 to verify recent transactions on my PayPal Premier Business card. I called PayPal first to make sure the call was legitimate. They assured me that it was, in fact, legit. They just asked me to confirm the dollar amount and date of one purchase I made. She said it's just a random check that they do from time to time to protect people's accounts. She then instructed me to call the number and verify the transaction with them, as well.

This number is totally legit. It is in fact a third party bank card security number (Card Services). They are used by many different banks. When they call about suspicious activity on your card, they'll mention whatever bank the card is through.

I worked for PNC Bank for a long time, and they did and do use this service. They will call if any debit/credit card transactions are flagged as potentially fraudulent. I just got one of these calls for the first time after making an unusually large purchase. I returned the message; the automation confirmed that I was calling from the same number and asked for the last four digits of my check card. When I provided that, they read off my recent purchases, and I pressed 1 to confirm each. That's IT. If you say that you did not make the purchase -- or don't return the call -- then your bank will not pay it.

Definitely be wary of giving out sensitive info over the phone, especially if you didn't initiate the call. Things like your SSN, account numbers, full credit card numbers, etc., should never be given out unless you know exactly who's on the line. The last four digits of a card number, though, is not sensitive info. No one can do anything with just that.

It's a legit number. This one works for Paypal. They did not ask any personal information, just verified my recent transactions. They did all the talking. I merely agreed with the transactions.
