Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question.  As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes.  The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question.  Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else.  So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you.  Let the FTC sort it out.

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.  Tell 'em  no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.

You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking).   the only thing they understand.

They called trying to confirm my year of birth and last name. Would not tell me the name of creditor.  Therefore refused to provide them any information.  Wouldn’t legitimate debt collector ask: Is this Bud Jones who was born on January 1st 2001?  rather then is this Bud?  What is your last name?  You were born January 1st of what year?    Sounded like a scam.

I didn't bother speaking I just picked up in a busy classroom. A man continuously tried to get me to talk to him saying "Hello? Hello?" and he became frustrated and said "If you're not going to reply I'm hanging up" and hung up. I haven't a clue who it was because they didn't state their business since I didn't say a word but I believe it's the same company as everyone else who has commented.

They called stating the company name (Aargon) which I've never heard in my entire life. Then he proceeded to ask me to verify my street address. As soon as I refused and said I needed to look up the company's name first before I verify anything, he proceeded to say that we had a bad connection and that my phone was breaking up. Told me he would call back. He called back and as soon as I picked up the "call ended." Haven't heard from them since. I also don't have any debts to pay, and I would have expected something in the mail if anything. Not a phone call from a third party.

Well known debt scammers around here.  They use a variety of names to scam people.  Using the following information as well as what CWG40 has posted:

You will need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation (by law they have to go back to the original creditor to prove you owe the debt), cease and desist calling, or "not me" letter (this will be the best money that you have ever invested).  Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it.  Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter.  You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to.  Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment.  If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.  Use these web sites to find an attorney in your state that will probably take the case on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket up front):  http://www.consumeradvocates.org/

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid. 

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Called wanting to speak with my Mother, Helen, advised the caller my mother died two years ago I am not sure he even knew her last name. Beware, not a safe number.

That's who just called my home which is on the federal do not call list and I don't owe anyone anything. So I'm not returning their call and if I do I'm giving my Atty name too cause talked to him about their call.

The DNC list doesn't apply to debt collectors, only telemarketers. And of course scammers completely ignore it.

They called me 17 times at 10:07 est and another 3 at 10:08 est. They are blocked but bless their little idiot hearts they try. Owed debt or not that’s harassment and illegal.

If it doesn’t show up on your credit report (or has been longer than 7 years) DON’T pay any creditor!

Snots call, say recorded line, of course not familiar with anything they are talking about-hang up, and block call.

I have received 2 call, so far, from this number. They refused to give any info, however they asked to speak with a relative who has been dead for 6 months. Something about the calls struck me as odd which is why I checked this site to determine if this was a legit company. They don't, judging from the comments here, sound like a very reputable company.

Called claiming I have debt in collections with them. I have no debts in collections according to my credit report. They hung up on me after telling me “you should check your mail more often”. Complete bs.

Called my cell phone but let no message,   Blocked.

I missed a phone call from this number yesterday.  The call blocker app on my phone prevented them from leaving a message.  According to the app the caller was a debt collector.  Some other users shared typical messages  left by this business.  I have no idea who they were trying to call and all of my accounts are in good standing.
