contacting Statistics Canada:

Email: infostats@statcan.gc.ca - SumGuy| 1 replyI'm pretty sure that 8339778287 is Stats Canada. My business got an email from stats canada a few months ago (I checked the email headers, the IP source of the email was the Can Gov't). I never answered the email. When stats canada wants you to answer a survey, they will hound you forever until you do it. I think they even have the law on their side. Today I just got a call again from 8339778287 (but I'm blocking 833 area code). 20 seconds later I get another call, from anonymous (caller ID is blocked). I have those calls go straight to voice mail, and an actual person (of oriental extraction) said he was from stats canada, wanted a call back, gave a number. I haven't followed through with this, don't know if I will.

- SumGuy replies to SumGuyThe email I got came in early July. It is a survey on Canadian Small Business conditions, 3'rd quarter. The phone number they want you to call them back on is the same number (8339778287). In the message they give you a code, you're supposed to call, press 4, then enter the code and wait to talk to someone.
- GWe received survey letters from the Federal Government in Canada a few weeks ago yes. It says they won't call us if we don't call them to participate. The government of Canada wouldn't have a caller ID name of 18339778287 and an impossible 833 number without a 1 in front, it came in as if it was a local area code call on caller ID as 833-977-8287. A man who's likely not born in Canada according to his voice left a voicemail (!), very rare, and he said "C like Charlie H like Hotel) reminding me of scammers on scambaiter videos I watch on Youtube lol.
a toll free number will never legitimately show the number on caller ID without the 1 in front, putting it as numbers without dashes in the Name above the number is to confuse people into thinking it is a legit call.
So I guess this is phishing by people aware of that survey the federal government in Ottawa has sent to all households in the country regarding mostly Health services issues, by mail, for us to call them and that they wouldn't call us first...- Caller: Scammers/Phishers

- G replies to deeThat's right.
So far every 833 toll free calls I ever received were scams or phishing attempts. Not having the 1- in front of the number on the caller ID is a big clue, they're counting on people not noticing it by having the name as 18339778287. I've had calls from the Federal Government before and caller ID always said GOUVERNEMENT DU CANADA (I live in french speaking area, they know where to use the language). See my post below to have more clues as to why it is an obvious scam/info fishing. Not to mention they called past 9PM, which is impossible.
As for other 1-833 toll free numbers calling, once they tried to impersonate NBC (National Bank of Canada), I called a local branch and they said they have no number at Corporate or elsewhere starting with 1-833. The other time it was some kind of overly good offer for a loan which would be impossible in these times of high interest rates from some woman who had a phone sound as bad as if she was calling from India but had a typical western Canada/maybe even northern midwest USA accent. At least those knew that 1- should precede the rest of the # with toll free numbers. I've seen fake 1-800 and 866, 877 (maybe even others) who didn't enter a caller ID name that made sense and had no 1- prefix in their number, when that happens, do not pick up the phone. - G replies to janeGood job Jane, I know this happened last year, but it seems there's a dedicated group of scammers using this number, posing as Statistics Canada. I replied to your post because this is also what was said in the voicemail they left me, I didn't even finish listening to the arms-long reference number and double pressed 7 to delete the voicemail.
- DGReceived VM from this number asking for call back and to quote a provided reference number. The reference number was quite garbled (meaning mostly unintelligible) because speaker rifled through it like it was a hot potato mashed up with her accent. Her mastery of the phonetic alphabet was severely lacking. The telephone number displayed appears to be legitimate but when I called it (and it was truly Stats Canada), they had no information about me at all -- so, why me getting a phone call/VM in the first place? Worrisome!
My advice:
1) Never respond to an unsolicited call (most especially if it "appears" to come from your bank). Just don't!!! If you answer by accident, take a call-back number (and, even a reference number, if provided). Do not answer any questions unless you initiate the call! And, double-check the call-back number to know whether it belongs to whomever they say.
2) If a phone number is provided in the email/phone call/whatever, check it out on this site or others. This number (833-977-8287) appears to be legitimate for Stats Canada but can be spoofed to fool you to answer "statistical questions" only to have you lose your identity and, maybe, money. That is, don't respond to questions involving personal information on a direct call to you -- always call them back after verifying the phone number, assuming (of course) you want to call them back.
If only Canada could implement better protocols to stop SPAM? STIR/SHAKEN would be a good start but is likely not sufficient. IP Phone numbers shouldn't be just "given out without regards" but this is a multi-national problem not easily solved by Canada, alone.- Caller: 833-977-8287

- SophieCaller ID shows Statistics Canada. Our household recently received a mail survey from them, adressed in our names, with a request to go online, answer a few questions, and MAYBE you'll qualify to answer the actual survey. This may have been a follow-up call for that, but they didn't leave any message.
