- Chewbacca-the-Wookie replies to Carl| 1 replyEasy. Low-income people who are struggling to make ends meet are the most likely to patronize these payday lenders. Drive through any city and notice where all the storefront payday joints are located. They're all in low-income areas where there is the most need and temptation go "grab a few bucks to get over the pay day hump". You never see these places in the more affluent areas, because wealth people either don't need to use them, or know what they're really all about and wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole. Then there are the online outfits that Montel Williams and others hock on TV all day long (at least the storefront joints, bad as they are, are bound by state usury caps). It's no secret that these spot are placed in programs that appeal to lower-income demographics. Those outfits are run by outright crooks who charge exorbitant interest rates as insane as 850% APR, with many of them operating offshore to avoid the domestic authorities. They cater to those who just need to pay the rent or keep the lights on (and I'm not saying that all payday loans are always used responsibly by the borrower, but I'll give credit where credit is due). Some of these folks are so desperate that they're willing to make a deal with the devil without realizing who they're really dealing with. The "lenders" also know that payday loans are a downward spiral that ultimately leads to robbing from Peter to pay Paul, and they count on just that. The blowhards who man the boiler-room phone banks may not be bright bulbs, but you can bet that the bigwigs who run these outfits know exactly what they're doing!
The problem, IMO, is a basic lack of financial education among the middle and lower class in America. Money is something we have to deal with every day, and yet, you'd be hard-pressed to find a school in this country that teaches financial education. Sure, they might teach you how to balance a checkbook, but when it comes to principles to saving vs spending, they leave that to the kids to figure out once they enter the real world, and by that time, it's a much harder lesson! You would think that in the world's foremost bastion of capitalism, people would be prepared for this at a young age, but then again (and pardon me while I put on my tinfoil conspiracy cap), I honestly believe that there is a concerted effort in this country to keep the impoverished in poverty and the indebted in debt so that bigger interests can ultimately benefit. I really can find no other explanation as to why "Personal Finance 101" isn't required study for most of our middle-schoolers. Really sad!
I honestly don't understand why the FCC allows these Montel Williams spots and their counterparts to air. It is, in my opinion, deceptive advertising designed to rope in people who never learned any better. Plus, given the fact that these are almost exclusively illegal outfits that violate the usury laws of all 50 states, there is no logical reason why these commercial spots should be allowed to air. I'm sure they're sliding them through some "loophole" in the law, but it's well past time that loophole was closed and this garbage yanked off the air! - Chewbacca-the-Wookie replies to CWG40Yeah, and they'll "mediate" you out of every penny you have and then some if you give them the chance.
- PookieOokie replies to PudgeOr they read your credit report because they are a "legitimate debt collector" aka bottom feeder and find something like "Zales" and then they call you and say " You owe us $$$4 for jewelry you bought 15 years ago so pay up" because they figure "Zales" = Jewelry and figure you won't remember. Had it happen. Except the dummy forgot about SOL and didn't know the debt had been paid. They will try anything! Quote "I am sending someone over there to take you by the ankles and shake the money out of your pockets!" I laughed at that guy. And then I told him he had revealed info to a third party and that I was not the wife but the mistress and screamed "What is that so and so doing buying that so and so wife jewelry for?" Oops! Hang up! Golly, the creepus never called back! Will never forget that one!

- Jane| 2 repliesI saw on the state unclaimed website that a place I had applied to live (gave them permission to run credit check) I backed out but am finding that they opened security, something to do with GE money and cable in my name. Maybe more.
When I called GE Money, they said they found nothing under that address but found old JCP and Mervyns accts. And transferred me to "Recovery" and gave me a number. The call disconnected but was on hold so long I hung up. They state this is to collect a 30 yr old debt and doing so have reinstated my liability.
So now I'm a victim of ID fraud and in reporting it, I am now going to be sued for a debt I paid but no longer have proof of. And my deceased ex maxxed out the one card while I was bedridden and my only alternative was to sue. He was my caretaker, how do you think that would work?- Caller: GE Money

- William replies to Jane"They state this is to collect a 30 yr old debt and doing so have reinstated my liability."
You have no liability. They are lying about their legal ability to collect. Make them send paper documentation that the original debt still exists. - BigA replies to JaneUnless you made a payment to them, the SOL has expired. Just talking to them about this does not reset it. They have no ability to legally sue if the debt is that old since it is out of SOL in every state. GE money is in a finance company in Australia and New Zealand. I am assuming you are in the US? If not then you will have to check the laws in your jurisdiction.
- Janet replies to doNothingAnd you are embarrassed because your picture can be viewed, and you have been exposed for what you are, a fat, sweaty, miserable, bloated, stinky hippo who can't even see his own willy because of the fat tummy obscuring the view. Go back to slapping your sack to pictures of Justin Bieber's armpits, and stop commenting on my personal business.
