They do have a contract with the Dept. of Education to collect on student loans, and they are obligated to abide by the FDCPA.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Attempted debt collection? I have no loans currently in collections. The one loan that isn't paid off is not through dept of education and also is currently in deferment. They have been harassing family members claiming that said persons numbers were on original loan apps. Horse sh*t! This kind of harassment is illegal as far as I can tell.

Yes it is which is why I have given you the information you need to take action against them which includes sending the certified, return receipt letters to create a paper trail, making reports of their criminal activities to the proper agencies, and the information you need to get a lawyer and to sue them.  It is up to you.  Put up with their harassment or make this the best year you ever had.

I didn't get a call from this Number but he said to call him back at it though. Being that my number is Area code 480, he called me from what appeared to be a local number. That number was 480-498-3800

That's what they do, to make it seem like it maybe someone you know. Would love if they say who they are rather than just saying call them back. Yeah, no thanks.

This number called my inlaws looking for me.  Stated they were with my work, which they are not.  Not even sure how they got my inlaws number for me or what they want.  All my student loans are current and even direct drafted each month.

I started receiving calls from this number on my work phone. I work for the Federal government and this is causing me significant problems with my supervisor. I don't answer calls that come through as UNKNOWN, and in the message she just says she has been trying to reach me for several days and that I need to contact her immediately. Doesn't say what it is in reference to or what company she is from. I haven't called back.

I got a call from a number and they left a message with this call back number (ending in 3352). They were looking for an ex I haven't spoken to in over 5 years. I kind of forgot he got student loans when we were dating and I was probably a backup number.
I called them and told them that I know who they were looking for, but I had no way to get in touch with him, seeing as I had not made contact with him in about 5 years. I almost said "If you hear from him, tell him to call this number. he owes me a new door." *long story*

    Fed Up!
Calling for someone that I don't even know and then claimed I was this persons ex-wife.  After threating with a lawyer for an harassment suit, he hung up on me!  [***].

I would recommend that if you have a student loan in default that you return the call, they can and will garnish your wages and take your income tax
refund and or up to %15 of your social security income.
