Does anyone know how to stop these calls? I think it is an automatic dialer because when I answered, they hung up. I called the number back and got a message that the number is not in service. I have heard of companies that sell packs of bogus phone numbers to solicitors so that their calls cannot be traced. This is just my opinion, but this practice should be against the law and any company selling bogus number should be prosecuted!

You probably got the wrong person at FCC or FTC; I complained to the FCC about a 419 scammer in Jamaica and received a letter that they had enough information to investigate. Although the number is registered to Embarq, which should indicate it is a bona fide landline, it has apparently been ported off since the DSL availability check indicates that the number is based in Embarq territory rather than displaying available packages and offers or being registered to a business. If they really are in Tallahassee, then Charles H Bronson's Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, who regulates telemarketers in Florida, should have no problem sending AgLaw and the Division of Consumer Services after 'em; they're in the same city as FDACS and the attorney general! Call them at 1-800-HELP-FLA (or 1-850-488-2221 outside of Florida) and tell them that you want to report an unregistered telemarketer. If they respond to you as they have to me, the scam artists will be locked up in less than a week.

Actually, the number appears to have been ported off; the DSL availability check does not recognize the number.

I used to do that a long time a go; I bought a coach's whistle at a sporting goods store specifically for that purpose. Funny as heck!

Don't be nice to 'em either; tell 'em that number spoofing is illegal, Do Not Call violations are pricy, you know where they live, they are stupid Tarpon lovers, emergency rooms will turn them away for being low lifes, they will die in jail as elders, you have friends that work for the FBI in Atlanta, Charles H. Bronson hates their guts for not registering with FDACS and will sue them for everything including their clothes, their spouses will live on the street, their children will go to foster homes and be informed of what bad people they are, their children will probably be bullied in school for being the spawn of such hell cats, and the media will make them seem like even worse donkeyholes (you know synonym for donkey) than they are if it's possible. I'd recommend worse, but I don't want to get in trouble. :P

I am a victim of having the same cell phone number as the first 7 digits of the people who are trying to scam people.  Therefore, when people in my area code do not dial a "1" before dialing the number they get my personal cell phone.  I have been called a "cranky b***ch" and cussed out by numerous people on a daily basis.  I try to explain what is happening to all the people that are calling me but it is getting ridiculous how many phone calls I get each day.  Telemarketers and people engaging in illegal activity should not be allowed to spoof using a invalid number.  Someone needs to do something to get these people and put them behind bars!!!
