As everyone on the comment thread has already said, if you put the # the automated message gives you as the tracking, it will not work on the UPS website, but if you enter it as a reference number, it will. That being said, when I called the number and gave them the reference #, they immediately asked for my name and I told them I was not comfortable providing that information until I could confirm what the call was regarding, since I had not purchased anything that required shipping from the United States to Montreal, Canada. I asked the rep to tell me who the merchant was, and she gave me a company/merchant name I had never heard of. I found it strange that my phone number was linked to a shipment that I did not order, so I asked if she could give me the name of the person the package was supposed to be shipped to. She gave me the name of a man I do not know, so I am under the assumption that somehow the phone number in UPS records was wrong, or that the person who ordered their package got their own phone number wrong?? Weird, and then she said she was going to send a message to her department to tell them there was an error, and she AGAIN asked me for my name. There was literally NO POINT to her needing my name, since we had already established that the package is not mine, and I am NOT the person the package was destined for.  I told her there was no reason to give her my name and that I was under no obligation to do so since the package and identifiying details are not my own. The rep's attitude changed a little at that point and she was audibly more impatient with me and was trying to hurry me off the phone. I asked why she doesn't just e-mail the MR. X since if she has his supposed phone number (but it was mine), then it is highly likely that she has his e-mail address, since all online shipments are typically done with an e-mail! She was a little flubbed at this one and just repeated that the only reason I got the automated call is because that was the phone number given to UPS. Instead of the usual, "Ok m'am sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for calling UPS" that you would expect, she simply said sorry for the inconveniene and was there anything else...Obviously, not. Even if this service is legitemely UPS, they don't have a very confidence-instilling system to go about it, and though many things are automated these days, it's too bad that it all seemed so shady.

I got a call from this number. Called them back. Because I had shipped a personal package to a business address they needed to confirm it was for personal use. I guess Canada Customs needed that to be documented. Seemed legit. They didn't ask for any personal info other than the tracking number and they new who the shipping company was.

This is what I’d like to know as well. I started receiving the call so after the package had been delivered.

Because it's quite likely not UPS calling.

Same deal, was UPS and called after a package was already delivered. Amazon pays for customs fees in advance so there's NO BENEFIT to paying UPS as well. If it's an Amazon package, it's safe to ignore.

The code is for the UPS reference number not the tracking number. The code is real but I had already received the package (for a few days) when I received a call from this number. I choose not to call back.

Whether legitly UPS or not, I still find it fishy. I had the same thing today as other users described: I got the call about information needed to clear the package through customs AFTER the package in question arrived at home.
If this is genuinely UPS, it`s really bad service: they should have known that the package was delivered, and they don`t need any other informaiont. I`d strongly suggest not to call back. Not sure what the benefit would be of calling them.
Another thing I was wondering: if they need your "authorization" to act as the customs broker, what options do I have? Can I say "No, you cannot clear customs"? It`s totally stupid to ask that authorization when the package is at customs. They got the mandate to bring the parcel from the source to the receipient. That includes passing it through customs. Don`t get it.

Received an automated message saying it was a customs broker for UPS with a tracking number that could not be traced online.  I phone UPS and verified the tracking number is a clearance number only and not a tracking number (which is why it cannot be searched on their website).  They verified a package that had already been delivered - this is a legitimate number.

May be legit, but they left a message at my workplace number a day or two after we'd received a package from USA.

I called the UPS main number, _not_ the one left in the voice msg. (important when sniffing out potential scams), and after a short debate about the need to process paperwork after we'd already received our package, they said they'd email a form for me to fill out. Never heard from them about this again.

I should point out we no longer use UPS, because they repeatedly deleted our online account when we didn't use it often enough. Bit of a hassle when trying to log in, yes? 😆 Now we use a broker for discounted services, but UPS isn't offered there.

If the tracking number they left on the voice mail does not work.
Then its most likely a scammer spoofing the number and pretending to be from UPS.

Yeah, its the Holiday Season and scammers are on the move too.
    Heres a message from UPS:
    Quote:
In addition to fraudulent websites and e-mails, fraudsters also may use the telephone, a fax machine, letters, or other communication methods in an attempt to gather your personal information. These fraudulent communications are the unauthorized actions of third parties not associated with UPS. Fraudulent communications claiming to be from UPS may claim to indicate a package is waiting to be delivered. These communications will generally ask you for personal information and/or a payment in advance of receiving a package, or may indicate a need to update your account by obtaining personal information or a copy of your UPS invoice.

If UPS contacts you regarding a package, the UPS representative will always be able to provide a tracking number, which you can verify on our website. You also should know that UPS may contact you from time to time regarding service offerings or for marketing purposes, but you may always verify our phone number and call back before proceeding.

If you are ever unsure of the validity of a communication, ask for the caller's first and last name and a call-back telephone number.

Scammers spoof legitimate names/numbers to trick people into giving them personal info or to try stealing money with some sort of lie. People come here to help warn others about unwanted/unknown callers by telling about their callers.
People who know their call is legitimate don't generally look up a number after they get off the phone, just to read how legitimate it was for others. Scammers who spoof numbers sometimes go around and make " my call was legitimate" posts  to try convincing their call recipient victims its safe. They usually post right after someone makes an informed post, such as my previous post.

So what exactly are you here to warn people about, that YOUR caller was legitimate,  just trying to reassure people when you call them, your legitimate?
Never trust a caller to be who they claim, always call from an official number to verify if they did call.
