You need to send them a certified, return receipt debt validation letter (think of it as the best $6.47 you ever invested).  Also send it first class mail in case no one will sign for it.  Make a notation of that fact at the bottom of the letter.  You also need to report them to the proper agencies to which I have provided links to.  Then you need to go out and get a consumer lawyer to sue them on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket) and let them pay you for the harassment.  If everyone did these three things, these crooks would be bankrupt and we would all be the richer for it.  Use these web sites to find an attorney in your state that will probably take the case on a contingency basis (no money out of your pocket up front):  http://www.consumeradvocates.org/

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Constantly calls looking for someone who does not live at my home.  I tell them they have the wrong number but continue to call at least twice a day.  They dont give a name or leave messages.  I believe them to be a debt collection agency.

They call relentlessly at home, at work. They won't stop. Really, there is nothing you can do until you file bankruptcy.

Received a call no message, I did phone back and it is a collection agency and they had a wrong number on file for ehomever they were looking for. Actually they were nice when I called back.

Threatened that they had papers to serve me even gave a case number.  I would not verify any information until they mailed me copies with there letterhead and backup information,  person on the phone got upset.

Northstar Collection Services - scammer, going to directories and calling people trying to get personal information

What should I do? They keep calling me and they don't leave a name just a number to call back. Are they legit in any fashion or is it just a scam? I do not owe anyone money and I don't have any collections pending on my credit reports.

It's basically a debt collection scam.  Simply ignore and block the calls.

BBB has seen a major increase in collection agencies starting business in the Upstate New York area over the past several years. In an effort to keep consumers informed about which collection agencies are operating in accordance with federal and state law, we have asked for specific information from all collection agencies located in our service area, including proof of licensing, bonding, and or registration required by NY state or other governments where the business is located, as well as proof of licensing required by any state in which the business operates. This collection agency has not responded to our requests. BBB advises consumers to be aware of their rights in regard to collections. This includes New York States law prohibiting any collection agency from collecting on Payday loans in the State of New York. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) outlines prohibited behavior when attempting to collect a debt, and outlines specific rights for consumers. There are penalties for agencies found in violation of the Act. BBB advises consumers to become familiar with their rights under the Act, which can be found at the Federal Trade Commission’s Website at: ftc.gov . Consumers can file with us at bbb.org/complain.

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question.  As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes.  The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question.  Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else.  So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you.  Let the FTC sort it out.

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

Just got a call from 855-211-4583 stating they were northstar services about a airlines elite mastercard. Told em I dont have any such cards. Knew my full name. Kept telling him I dont have a card like that. Going on my call reject list!!

This is an urban legend and patently false.  No one (even the scammers) can charge anything to you using a recorded "yes."

NorthStar debt collector....total scam....I have no debt for them to being calling about.

i repeatedly receive calls from this number both on my home number and cell.  They never state who they are calling or give any details.
