I received two voicemail messages two Mondays in a row from Natasha Cook of Jay Smith & Associates asking me to call 855-693-3504 because they want to serve legal papers with regard to some person we don't know. Seems like a fishing scam. They want you to call them back so they can get your real information and possibly sell it or use it for a future scam. Note: If law firms have papers to serve you with, they don't call you ahead of time, they just show up at your door and surprise you, and you've been served. Another note: From what I've read, if you call an 855 number back and block your number, they will still have your number, because you cannot block a call to a toll-free number so don't volunteer any information to such scammers.

I received a call from the same company and they said the same thing. Thanks for this information.

Received a voicemail from Jessica Sanders of J. Smith and Associates asking me to call back this number.  They are looking for a "William Braden".  I don't know this name, after the above reports, I'm not calling back.

Received a call/ voice mail from Martin stating he was calling from Johnson Smith and Assoc.He said that legal papers were filed at their office and will be served on the 30th. He said that they needed a call back to confirm or reschedule if no one would be home.

Well known criminal enterprise.  Not registered in any state.  Not registered in Massachusetts as a debt collector.  We haven't tracked them down to a real address just yet.

Website was created in March of 2017 according to Whois.
The BBB has no page on them under that name
The address is a UPS store, but another criminal debt collector by the name of Receivable Management Corporation aka RMC is listed at that address with a “suite” number
They are not registered under that name with the Massachusetts Dept. of State or registered as a debt collection agency, which legally preclude them from doing business.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.  

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Same-they called me today- I'm guessing by the dates it's something weird, they asked for my father whom I have not been in contact with in 10+years

I received a call from Natasha Cook today too. Same story, they need to send legal papers and it is "imperative" that I call back and confirm that someone will be there to sign for the papers. She must have said imperative 3 times. What made it sound fishy was that she was asking for my dad, not me.
But if it is not a scam then your best legal defense is to not return dubious phone calls and you're untouchable :-)

same experience, Jessica left voicemail with a almost grunting voice trying to sound serious. She wanted to confirm next day delivery of legal papers and to call back back to re-schedule. I believe they first want to know they have the right number (or any working number) and then would probably ask for your address (wanting to confirm they have the right address). Fishing for info scheme and reason why I don't answer numbers I do not know.

The main motive of the call is to try and scare you out of money. This is one where you'll be able to cut a deal to make the attempt to "serve you papers" magically disappear. They'll take what they can get, though, including personal information as well. The only thing that won't happen with these calls is having a computer ransacked. If you can avoid unknown callers getting a chance to leave you threatening messages, they've got no way to do anything to you. BigA provided useful information as well.~I Was Prepared~JustinCase

Kelly Wasson-- From Johnson, Smith and Associates- said they have legal papers to serve, and to please call back if "someone" is not available to sign for them on Thursday (no date given). The call came to my phone with "unknown" number. I did not answer, the message went to voice mail.

Received two voice mail messages from Natasha of this company, looking for my son, who has not lived with me in over 30 years, lol, wanting to send him some legal papers.

Martin has called from blocked number. Legal, civil papers to be served someone 18+ needs to sign. He has called several times, left voicemails, i have saved two of them.

Natasha Cook called from J Smith & Associates claiming that legal documents were to be delivered on Tuesday between 12-3 and someone 18 and older needed to sign for them. She said their legal dept. needed to be contacted to confirm or reschedule delivery. The number given was 855-500-5957. I've worked in a law office and this is an absurd way of trying to serve legal documents. SCAM!!
