If it was a letter, go to your Post Office and talk to a Postal Inspector, the Post Office gets upset about MAIL FRAUD! - Karen Lii replies to Not Falling for It Guy| 2 repliesIf you notice, they fake letter has real information on it from the U.S. Department of the Treasury; however, the contact information under "how can I stop this?" is the fake scammers information. It does look legitimate unless you know that 866-213-1717 and Debt Management Servicing Center is not associated in any way with the U.S. Government. I called the real number, 1-800-304-3107 at the Treasury and they had no idea this was going on. They told me to contact the AG office in Birmingham and see what they suggest, and keep the letter, but don't call or provide any information to the debt company. I wish people would not go by the fact it looks like a legitimate letter and they were smart enough to put a real phone number in the letter; although they suggest you can only call them to settle the debt. It's fake. It's not the U.S. Department of the Treasury who sent the letter, they copy and pasted their own information under How can I stop this to trick you.
- Karen Lii replies to EvaYou called the right number, 800-304-3107. They don't know that this scammer has inserted their own information into the letter. You have to actually talk to an agent at the ..3107 number. That is the real number. They don't know anything about the company noted and will have you contact AG.
- Lenny replies to Karen LiiI received two different envelopes of this same notice, four copies in each envelope. Same as others, you cannot get through to the number. I called for the final time about 30 minutes before they were supposed to be closed and the recording said they were closed. This is certainly a scam, thank for your informative post.
- Lenny replies to Brian GDid you check with the VA?
- Laura replies to EvaAny questions about Treasury collection call the TREASURY OFFSET PROGRAM 800-304-3107 PRESS 2 AND THEN PRESS 5 FOR ALL OTHER INQUIRIES OF COURSE NUMBERS CHANGE BUT THIS WORKED for me in April 2016
- CWG40 replies to Patricia ChaneyYou should go to police and make a complaint of fraud. If you used a cc or debit card go to your bank and see if the transaction can be reversed for fraud. I'm pretty sure that money went to the pockets of the scammers. If you have an address for these scammers, please post it here.
- CWG40 replies to Not Falling for It GuyAny documents received by US mail which appear fraudulent, should be taken down to the local post office so that the postal
inspectors can take a look at them. This is mail fraud. - CWG40Anyone in receipt of these clearly fraudulent letters should take them to the local post office and request that the postal inspectors look into the mailings. This is clearly mail fraud.

The letter states that I owe the 'Bureau of Fiscal Service'
I called the 888-826-3127 which is the number i found on the website at https://www.fiscal.treasury.gov/fsservices/go ... contact_dms.htm which I checked the whois database for the url and it is registered to the Treasury department
When I talked to the person on the other line i asked about the 866-213-1714 and it is one of the numbers they use
its for the VA, So if you owe the VA for anything that's what it might be for
The letter states that I owe the 'Bureau of Fiscal Service'- Caller: 866-213-1714
- Call type: Debt collector
- B-Edwards replies to JohnThis sounds worth checking carefully. There is indeed a "Bureau of Fiscal Service" and there are also a few scams noted on the .gov web site. There is even a thread here on 800notes that is related. https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-888-826-3127
In general, I am a fan of read, listen and verify with a phone number you look up and call for yourself. - ChristinaMy father received this letter from them! This is a fraud, I called them number and as I was on hold something didn't seem right and I stumbled across this post. Total fraudulent. DO NOT send them anything. Scammers @ 1-866-213-1714
- N replies to Not Falling for It Guy| 1 replyActually. I called the US Dept of Treasury official number from their official website and this number and used the official line, where you enter your information to find out if you have any offsets, and 866-213-1714 was given to me as an agency that I have an offset amount for. So this number is valid, to a Federal agency (my guess is VA or state). I triple checked and even used the automated service twice just to make sure. This number was given to me both times.
- BigA replies to NThis phone number is not listed on the official government website. Nothing even close to an 866 number.
