This is NOT a scammer phone number.  If you owe money to the VA and it's over 120 days old, the VA is now forwarding that money to the Treasury Dept.  You can thank Congress for that.

The VA has been turning debt over to Treasury for years; I think of it as a 'payroll deduction'.  I've gotten at least 3 separate mailings over the last 2 years; 3 or 4 copies of the same letter.  No way this is legit!!!  Treasury sends a notice that $__ will be deducted from next SS check, and it is.  Sorta similar format, but SSN and dollar amounts to be withheld are printed in the letter, along with date of deduction.  DO NOT BITE!

This outfit also mails official-looking, but vague, letters that threaten.  I haven't gotten the call (yet), but my phone # does not appear in any directory; only can be reached by robo-dial.  I just get threatening letters about a debt I never incurred and don't owe.  Run your free credit report; any collectible debt will show up there.  Go to AnnualCreditReport.com and check for yourself; it's free, as required by law, and not a scam.

I got the letter with the same number. Thinking just like everyone else that it was a scam I looked up the Treasury number (888-826-3127) and after about an hour on hold a very pleasant lady answered.  She took my information and confirmed that a bill from the V.A. had indeed slipped past me.  She gave me an id number for the debt and I went to https://www.pay.gov and paid the debt, no problem, no scam that I can see.

The debt did not show on my credit report either because the V.A. did not request that, as the nice lady explained.  She further explained that once the V.A. sent the debt to Treasury they no longer show it on your bill.

Got a letter from U.S. Department of the Treasury, Bureau of the Fiscal Service, P.O. Box 1686, Birmingham, AL 35201-1686 dated 10/03/17. It read that the agency I owe is Fiscal Service - DMSC. It claimed that federal law requires Treasure to withhold up to 15% of my monthly SS payment because I failed to pay or otherwise resolve this debt. It doesn't mention what the debt amount is or to whom I owed it. This DMSC is supposedly a collection agency. It said the withholding will begin no sooner than 12/2017, and I have time to act. I was to contact them at 866-213-1714, and it listed an account number and another P.O. Box: 830794. It further claimed that only the agency listed (Fiscal Service - DMSC) can assist me in resolving this debt. At the bottom of the letter, it read "This collection action is administered through the Treasure Offset Program (TOP). If you have questions about this program, please call 1-800-304-3107 or visit our website at www.fiscal.treasure.gov/TOP".

I'm going to check out the website and see if I can get more information. Meanwhile, I have no idea why anyone thinks I owe money.

Update: I checked out scam website http://fernleynews.com/news/major-scam-affecting-vets-and-seniors/ and am now convinced this is a scam. One important-seeming bit of information was that the "seal" on the letter proved it was photocopied, and not an official Dept. of Treasure letter. It also mention the fact that the debt or debt agency was not listed.

I received the same set of letters.  Seven letters were sent in the  envelope, each with a different account number.  I took the letters to the VA, and was told that $301 was sent to the dept of treasury for collections. I asked about the different account numbers, and was told that each individual amount is assigned a different account number.  A concern for me is the fact that I have talked to four different people at the VA, and I get conflicting answers from a couple of them.  The first three I talked to said that the total bills sent to me totaled $506, from 2016 till now.  Out of that $301 has been sent to collections (Dept of the Treasury).  Since Sept, I have made payments totaling $404.  These are all rounded figures by the way.  Where does the $301 come from?  Hmmm, puzzling,  Now, I talk to a lady today, and she tells me that my account goes back to 2008.  The odd part about that is that my doctor didn't put me on atenolol, for high blood pressure until after my wife passed away in 2011. I'll have to check with my doctor to find the exact time.
The number to call about paying the debt, 866-213-1714 is the same number given to me by the VA.
There just seems to be so much that just doesn't add up.

I got the same letter mine was dated 10/03/17 there were 18 photo copies  in the envelope that came in my Post Office Box.
The zip on the envelope was 64117.
The envelope had no return address and there was no Blue govt seal onthe outside of the envelope or anyplace inside the envelope

Do Postal Inspectors still go after Mail Fraud?

Willthe Office of the State Attorney General of the zip code 64117 go after these bottom feeders?

You are wrong. These letters are still a scam even though the phone number checks out as legitimate. I'm a Korean War vet and the few times that I've fallen 120 days behind, the Treasury Dept doesn't send warning letters.  They just send a letter stating that you owe the U.S. government an exact amount and if you don't pay it, then they deduct it from SS or collect by other means. Sometimes this happens when your co-pay insurance is slow paying your claims. I've compared the fake letterhead address and zip to the real Bureau and they don't match. The Treasury Dept always states the amount you owe. These scammers haven't a clue what that is, so, I don't care what ph no. these guys use, these letters are still a scam.

Got the same letter, and after researching everything on it, one of the numbers is actually H&R block!  Also it claims  dept. of treasury is in Alabama, but to contact them in Texas. They said they may garnish 15% of my s.s, but s.s has ever contacted me. Also the logo is wrong. This appears to be a scam. Do not contact them.

The notice I received showed that telephone number but showed that my SS had already been deducted for Veterans Health Admin. I have no idea what the deduction is for. I tried to look up on TOP "Who do I owe?" but could not find anything. What do I do?
