    Threatened to take to court and collect money on a mastercard that was paid in 2011 and have a Paid In Full Letter to prove it and faxed a copy to them. They say they can still collect the money because it wasn't reported to the credit bureau. They said I have until the end of the week to pay them or they would take me to court and have over 4,000 dollars in court costs. Contacted the Attorney Generals Office and they said it's a scam. They advised me to file a police report.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    said they have a case against me;  I called back and they said unless I give them more info about myself,
    they can not talk to me.

    They told me husband ( he took first call) that they were representing the sheriff's dept.  Now they tell me,
    that they did not say thought.

    When they answered the pho - they said they were a consulting firm; then later a law firm;  every
    sentence changed who they were.  I  told them I would have my attorney call them - at that point - give us
    his number & we will talk with him.   I said no.  But I do have an attorney.

    This afternoon, I got a call from a gentleman who identified himself as Mike O'Riley from SNB Processing. His # on my Caller ID was 720-544-7880. He sounded very professional and stated that my name came up because someone was about to file a lawsuit against me in a federal court. He then proceeded to give the # of the "law firm" (1-866-252-3492) that handles that lawsuit and a case # (DR5006). I called this # and the receptionist picked up. I asked what firm I reached, she replied "R&J Consulting Firm". I asked her what kind of firm that was, and she told it me it was a LAW FIRM and asked for my case #. I gave her my case # and she transferred me to some guy who immediately asked me for my name and Social Security # to "verify that he is speaking to the right person" because "this is a highly sensitive matter". I told him there is NO WAY I am giving him my SSN, to which he replied, "then we're going to file a case against you" and hung up! I then called "Michael O'Riley" abck to see if this was a working # and he picked up! I told him I am about to file a case with Attorney General, and he said, "Good luck with that" and hung up. SCAM SCAM SCAM! Report both #s if you hear from either of them!

    Then they MUST identify themselves as such. Why are they pretending to be a LAW FIRM? And who do they think they are kidding? What a bunch of pathetic losers!

    Do your homework Jack, R&J is not a collection agency, it wouldn't suprise me if this was Shawn Bradley possing as Jack Smith. I called the attorney generals office and this IS A SCAM! If you did your homework R&J consulting and JJD collections are the same people, same phone # and same address. In fact, the address they gave me is in a plaza and is the address to the ups store, imagine that. And the phone # that calls with a case # is a land line, in fact, when I called the # back and asked for an address where there located, John Howard didn't know what to say and hung up on me. Get the facts and don't fall for this scam!!

    Almost certainly a scam.

    These [***] just called my ex-wife and proceeded to threaten to sue her.
    We've been divorced over 20 years...
    Pretty obvious when they cant be bothered to check any public records

    If they call back, they'll get a follow up from my attorney.

    I recvd similar call on our land line - but was for a relative. Weird that they had our number - but said exactly what I just read. How did you handle. Pretty scary that they had birth-date and last 4 digits of social. I did not mention how I was related but said I would pass on the message. I would appreciate any feedback as this is so wrong!

    Just call a voicemail from this phone number asking for my husband. Said it was in regards to a "legal matter". How ironic that we just get a call when we are trying to buy our first home. We believe it's b/c our credit was just ran to try and qualify for a house which we did. How also uncanny that a debt is getting ready to fall off 08-2013 and now "all of a sudden" we get a call about an "urgent legal matter." Whatever.

    Lady didn't leave her name just said for him to call back to 866-252-3492 but the number she called from was: 740-777-1274. If it's truly legit, leave a voicemail with your name and what the call is truly in regards too. How bout a company name too.....ugh.

    Called me too
    Called myself and my parents stating that I needed to call back and give them a 'case number' because it was 'an important legal matter'. These clowns called from another number a few weeks ago. I have no outstanding debt. We keep reporting the phone numbers and they keep switching to new ones. My identity was stolen and those [***] must have sold these [***] my info. This time they called my cell number, which I thought was illegal. When I asked if they were lawyers, I was told that they were, so I asked for their Bar Association number, and what states they are legally allowed to practice law in. I was transferred to a number for a guy 'who could give me that info' but all I got was voicemail. Don't give them any personal info, they already have enough to be able to contact you, possibly have your Social Security Number, and are harassing your family (if you google your name, you will also get a list of family members), who they call and state that you gave them their number as a contact person. No, you didn't, they got it on google.

    stupid me
    I also got a phone call from 702-421-1272 telling me to call 866-252-3492 they told me I was going to be sued over a credit card I had in 2006 and stopped paying on. I filed bankruptcy 2 years ago but they said they don't have it on file I was stupid and gave them the last 4 of my ss# and they repeated the rest. Now I see it is a scam. I'm calling the bankruptcy lawyers I used and see what can be done.

    Just received a call from a "Processor"...she didn't give her name or who she was representing, just stated there was a case against me and that I had 15 minutes to call and get it straightened out with the collection agency. I called this collection agency and they told me that I had a case against me from a credit card that I opened and defaulted on in 2006. Apparently my account stayed open until 2011 which I know is a lie because I got a notification from Capital One. Anyway, they are apparently sending me debt validation letters and other documents which I should be getting in 45 minutes to an hour. I did refuse to pay them until I had validation of the debt. The statute of limitations in Washington State states that collectors have 6 years to collect on debts or I can't be sued. We will see......
