For Several months now, I am getting a call from the 866-265-7865 number stating that there is an important matter they need to discuss. I call the number and it is bon-ton whom I do have an account with, which is however, current. They do not know why I am getting the call. Collections dept claims they aren't calling me that my phone number isn't even in the system.

I have asked for an address to send a cease and desist letter, since the payments are on time and there is no reason for them to be calling me, but they refuse to give me an address.

For others' information Bon-ton, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's, and Younkers are all owned by HSBC bank who bought them out about 2 or 3 years ago.

We got a message from them for the first time today that said they were trying to contact us and it was urgent - no name was mentioned.  This number dialed our house NINE TIMES today.  Then, we had a different message asking to speak to a specific person (who isn't at our number obviously), originating from a different telephone number.  I Googled both and discovered that it is the same company - formerly Global Advantage but apparently they have a new name that I didn't catch on the message.  I called and actually got a human so I told them no one by that name was here and he said he'd remove our number from the list.  We'll see if they actually do...

These people called asking for my ex daughter-in-law and my stepson. My husband told them to stop calling, but they called back the same day. Are there no laws governing this type of harrassment?

American Express and Capital One must have finally gotten word that Americans will NOT deal with debt collectors calling from India with such names as ‘Bob Rogers’ and ‘Lisa McDonald!

Anyone who hires collectors form INDIA should be aware that no one in America wants to deal with them. These people are far removed from any type of training that gives them credibility and how DUMB an organization do you have to be to move all our private information overseas?

I urge anyone receiving calls from this or any other overseas debt collection organization to NEVER deal with them. You can waste as much of their time as you want because they will talk to you forever. Make them spend as much time as possible on the phone, tell them to send you validation notices, then tell them to do it again, they are NOT that savvy.

I doubt you will ever get involved in a lawsuit because once programmed, INDIA debt collectors run on auto pilot forever, so instead of getting mad, have fun with them. Keep them at arm’s length; let them think payday is just a few days off, then start all over with the validation. The more of their time you waste, the more money you make them spend, the less chance of anything escalating. These are VERY nice people, just in the wrong business. They get paid whether you send them money or not, so DON’T send them any money. Make their handlers pay for all the wasted time, calls and documents. NEVER give them you’re banking information.

    Robin--

Third Party Collection Agencies (such as this one) are regulated by the FTC
    (Federal Trade Commission).

And, yes, they do have laws on the books (Fair Debt Collections Practices Act/FDCPA) prohibiting such harassment. The problem is, the laws are over 30 years old and the CA's thumb their noses at them and either write off the penalties and fines as a "cost of doing business" or change their names and move their operations overseas, to avoid paying anything altogether.

But, don't let this stop you from sending them a Cease Communication letter VIA certified mail and requesting a return receipt. Keep copies of everything you send.

Go to this website: http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/disputing-debt-collections.html They have some good examples of some cease communication letters.

Under Section 809 of the FDCPA, you have the right to demand in writing that they stop calling REGARDLESS of whether or not you own the debt:

    c) CEASING COMMUNICATION.  If a consumer notifies a debt collector in writing that the consumer refuses to pay a debt or that the consumer wishes the debt collector to cease further communication with the consumer, the debt collector shall not communicate further with the consumer with respect to such debt, except --

    (1) to advise the consumer that the debt collector's further efforts are being terminated;

    (2) to notify the consumer that the debt collector or creditor may invoke specified remedies which are ordinarily invoked by such debt collector or creditor; or

    (3) where applicable, to notify the consumer that the debt collector or creditor intends to invoke a specified remedy.

    http://www.creditinfocenter.com/legal/FDCPA.shtml#805

If they continue calling after you have written proof that they have received your letter, they can face fines of up to $1,000.00 PER violation:

    Who          Why             Precedent/Law              Fine

Collection agencies if you have sent them a cease and desist letter and they still call you  Consumer protection afforded by the FDCPA (FDCPA
    Section 805 (c)). $1,000.

The FDCPA can be viewed in its entirety at:

I just found this site. I didn't know it was this bad. I am now getting phone calls from whoever these people are. I don't even owe any money.

Like most of you, they are calling from one number (201-210-3618) and leaving a recorded message with another number (966-265-7685).

Thank you, Alfalfa, for this information. I am certainly going to use it.

We keep getting calls from 201-210-3618 saying to call this number it seems at least once a day. The female caller has a slight accent.  It is a recording and they leave no company name and caller id says unknown. I understand that some "toll free" numbers actually are not and they can charge you for calling them.  We have not returned these suspicious calls.  We don't owe anyone any money.  Must be some kind of very annoying scam.Isn't this illegal?  Do we have to wait for an Obama Administration to protect us from these "entrepreneurial capitalists" i.e. crooks?

I am providing a link to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act(FDCPA) which governs what debt collection companies are "supposed" to follow, no matter what country the call may be coming from or whether or not it is a third party and, in some instances, the original creditor. I've read all of these complaints in this blog and the paragraphs to pay particular attention to are 804, 805, and 806. The FDCPA was added as a statute to the Consumer Credit Protection Act in 1978 as "Title VIII". It is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission so all complaints, grievances, and formal suits should go to them first but you may also file complaints in your own state and federal courts. The link is:

    http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf

If you happen to get a call from 866-265-7685 again, or from any other number for that matter who doesn't identify themselves, please, PLEASE, do not be afraid to call back. When you do and you're able to talk with a real, live person, ask them:
    1. Who are you?
    2. Where is your business located?
    3. To whom am I speaking with?
    4. Write down the time and date of the call
    5. If you have caller ID, write down the time and date for when the call was made by them to you, the call that told you to return a call to 866-265-7685(this is information you'll need to provide when you file a complaint).

Then politely inform them that the message on your answering machine said to call 866-265-7685 but that it did not identify the name of the company or why they were calling, BOTH OF WHICH ARE VIOLATIONS OF:
    U.S.C.,TITLE 15, CHAPTER 41, SUBCHAPTER 5, PARAGRAPH 1692e, SUBPARAGRAPH 11.

Your next step is then to let them know you will be filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Don't debate with them. Be firm and make the call short. Then, above all else, TAKE THE TIME TO FILE THE COMPLAINT!!!!! This is the only way companies like this will be stopped. I hope this helps.

I received a call from this number at work???  The message was vague and in broken English.  I tried calling back and got put on hold.  The message said that the name of the company was Global Advantages.  Sounds like Telemarketer to me.  I am not going to waste any more time on them unless they call back - then I may report the number.

Caller was "Shane" with Aegis Receivable Management, Inc. Shane had an Indian or Pakistani accent. He was looking for a relative (had her first name only and it was correct) and said he got my name off a website. Shane gave me the number for her to call: 866-877-0003, ext 34056.

I am a front desk receptionist, who keeps getting this call for one of our employees, from party saying his name is Daniel Lee. This person works night shift so I keep telling this Daniel Lee from Aegis Company, that all I can do is take a message and have party call him. This Daniel Lee is getting very rude when I tell him that this is all that I can do. So today he calls again demanding that he talk to our manager to make employee return his call. Again I tell him that I can only take a message. I did later verify with manager that this company and person is not company related. He will give no other information as to what Aegis is or reason that he is being so rude and demanding to talk to party.

I am getting the same thing. A phone call from one number wanting me to call back on another number. Its gotten so bad that i dont even answer my phone anymore and want to change my number. My boyfriend gets so mad because the phone rings all the time and i tell him not to answer. Im tired of these phone calls late at night when i have to get up and go to work in the morning. There has to be something we can do to get them to stop these phone calls. And this isnt the only one they are coming from either.Im getting them from all different ones.

i'd just like to tell all these pple who have posted so kindly about Global Vantedge that they say that we are breaking their laws... want to ask them what they know about FDCPA? Global Vantedge or rather Aegis Receivable Management Inc. (the new name) also outsources some of their business abroad... u should know that we are only doing our jobs n that we, sitting in a foreign country, know more about your laws than u guys do! also, we know that we aren't breaking the law when we call, because if we do, we get punished! money from our salaries gets deducted! if u knew how to calm down n tell them its a wrong no, they aren't dumb that they'll keep calling u even when they know that they aren't gonna get a payment outta u!!!

one day, for kicks and giggles, i answered the phone from the 866-265-7685 number.  it was a recording that went on about some debt.  knowing i don't owe anyone, i hung up thinking it was a scam.  the calls continued, i just ignored them, then i started picking up and immediately hanging up.  every morning for the past week, around 8am est, they would call.  i googled the number, got this page, called them back, told them they need to remove my number, they asked who i was, if i knew so-and-so (my step daughter),  i told them she doesn't live here, they said they wouldn't call number anymore.  the man wasn't rude, seemed to have caller id on his end or something that the information was up so fast, i hope i'm not called anymore.
