Claimed to be from Fifth Third bank, saying they detected some potentially illegal activity on my account and placed a lock on it.

Before I called them I got service numbers from Fifth Third's website and called them. My account was not blocked.

Call was obviously a scam. I gave them no information and I suggest you don't either.

Lady called for my wife and said there has been some charges to her card. We share the same account. Then check our bank account and everything was normal. Can't wait to call them back and mess with them.

I called the Bank from the customer service number on the back of the card.  They said that the card number had been compromised.  They didn't ask for any private information concerning me or the card.  They said thay would have to deactivate the card.  They said they would send me a new one in 3-5 business days.  That was it.

    Completely legit......1-866-422-0251

I called 5/3rd customer service, they then call the 866-442-0251 on a three way call.  The card monitoring company notice a small charge that they could not identify and put my card on hold and they will issue me a new credit/debit card in three days.  They were very helpful and it is great to have someone looking out for me.

    it's real
I got a letter in the mail today stating my card may be being used without my knowledge.  I googled the number and found this website.  I called Fifth Third and they directed me to their fraud dept. which was the number on the letter.  Someone did try to use my bank credit card.  So.... it is legit.

Real number to Fifth Third bank fraud department.  They caught 6 "manually keyed transactions for different amounts" and called me.  They also blocked my online credit card access on the same day, so I knew they were legit, since no one else could have gone into the bank server and blocked just that account alone.

866-442-0251 is the Fifth Third Bank fraud dept. They catch fraudulent charges. They only ask for your address to verify the card, and don't ask for ssn or DOB or anything sensitive.

They are real. I was skeptical at first but they are real. I am a victim of fraud, and I called them and now things are taken care of.

This was indeed from 5/3. I called the number on their website to report a stolen card because all other customer service numbers were closed for the weekend. I explained the call I received, and they verified that my account was currently on hold for fraud and transferred me to the number. They had also blocked my online access, and I had a card declined while I was out.

So, just check with 5/3 directly first if you are dubious.

This is 5/3 Bank number. They are on top of it. My money will be returned and
it is so good to know they caught it. My weekend is now restored to peaceful
knowing my money is safe. And for a retired person (or anyone), this is especially
    comforting.

I am not so sure that this is legit.  We just got this letter saying our account was blocked.  We do not have an account with 5th 3rd bank.

With some trepidation I called the number, they asked for the case number, asked for the a couple digits of my SSN for identity confirmation, then they listed off all recent charges I had made without my having volunteered information on any of them. The most I did after they relayed the information was to confirm the payment amount for one of the charges. I was purchasing an item on eBay from a seller in Hong Kong which is why their fraud detection kicked in and blocked the charge. Either these guys are master hackers with root level access to Fifth Third's bank records or this is just their fraud detection department (possibly outsourced to Vantiv, since that was the name displayed on caller id).

This is the number of a third party contracted by 5th3rd Bank.  The voicemail I received said it was from a "financial institution" which concerned me so I called the bank myself.  After speaking to a bank rep they transferred me to the third party which had detected fraud on my account.

Had a message to call stating suspected fraud and they had blocked my card.  Went online to check card and was unable to do so as it was blocked.  Called 5th 3rd as message did not identify themselves as representatives for 5th 3rd.  5thth 3rd then transferred me.  The only personal information they asked for was the last 4 of ss#.  They provided all other inforamtion.  Card had been used in another town/airport, just one charge.  We also reviewed other recent charges for my sanity to make sure there were no other additional charges.  THE PHONE NUMBER IS LEGIT!

LEGIT 100% I answered the phone and only had to say "yes I am the cardholder" they provided all the other information for the over seas transactions they wanted to verify. I wasn't aware where they were coming from! Be thankful you have people out there to watch over your accounts for fraud!

This is a real # to the frau department at 5/3 bank. I made a purchase over the phone for tickets in Orlando after making two small local purchases so they locked my card and sent me an email to call the # on the back of the card.

    Scam
This line is a scam.  Do NOT under any circumstances provide them with your SSN or account information.  They will call you from a random phone number (in my case it was 513-900-400) first and direct you to return their call to 866-442-0251 and provide your "reference number."  Both times I called this number, the same woman named "Josetta" answered.  What are the chances of the same person answering a legit nationwide credit fraud detection vendor for Fifth Third two days in a row?  When I challenged her that she was involved with a phishing scam, she proceeded to argue with me in a very unprofessional manner.  Anyone working for a legit company would not behave in the manner she did.  She also asked for my FULL Social Security Number and account number.  Your bank will tell you any legit representative will never ask for that information over the phone.  There is a reason you have security questions on file to answer in such a situation.  When I called the ACTUAL Fraud Dept at Fifth Third at 800-676-5869, they confirmed that no one from their company or any of their legit vendors would have asked for that information over the phone.  The scammers tell you that they put a block on your account so that you will let your guard down so they can make further, much larger, purchases on your account (the initial charges are small as they "feel you out").  They want you to give them your SSN, making you think you can fix the problem with your account.  Do NOT do it.  The legit number for Fifth Third Fraud Dept. Is 800-876-5869.  Those of you who gave out your info better keep a close eye on your accounts.
