- Crimson| 5 repliesIt's Progressive Insurance. They needed my updated info for my car.
- Caller: Progressive
- Steve replies to Crimson| 2 repliesYou think it's Progressive? How do you know? As a matter of policy, NEVER respond to a robocall. AFAIK it's phishing. I got this and hung up immediately. If Progressive needs anything from me, they can send me an e-mail. Then, I will go directly to their site and contact them (never click on a link in an e-mail either).
Just remember this simple rule: the client always contacts the server.
If the server contacts you, flip the conversation over so that it becomes a clean client-server contact. Go directly to their site, call them directly, etc. That way you know you're not being phished. - S. SmithClaimed to be Progressive Insurance asking to verify your driver's license. Asks for Date of Birth to 'verify' your identity. When I asked caller why they were calling me, he couldn't tell me. I actually had business with Progressive, so I immediately called Progressive and asked if they were trying to contact me. My file showed no record of outgoing calls at all.
In short -- this number is trying to phish for your personal information. Deal with them with extreme caution. - Relieved| 3 repliesGot a call from them claiming to be progressive. Asked for my birthday and DL #. Confirmation of online account confirms that this is Progressive as a call record was in my account immediately after the call.

- Star| 1 replyJust got a call from this number which I didn't answer. They didn't leave a message ... so it's either not Progressive or not important - in which case, why call in the first place? Always - if the caller is not showing as someone in my book then I don't answer and if it's a legitimate call the caller will leave a message. People, it's not rocket science!!!
- DaveI got robo-called from this # earlier this morning. The robot said it was Progressive and something about they have a driver's license in a state other than the one my policy is in on file for my account. I hit the one or 2 requested #'s to talk to a representative, and that is when I went from thinking it was probably legit, to feeling like I was on the phone with a Nigerian Prince (crook). I confirmed my name and birthdate right off the bat, but from that point, the guy could not even provide a straight forward answer to a straight forward question. He kept talking in circles, and no matter the question I asked he would end up saying something about, I don't need to worry about any penalties or things like that if I don't give him the info. WTF? What penalties would I be worried about and why? Who are you and what are you talking about? I told the guy he was creeping me out and hung up.
So then I called the customer service number on my proof of coverage card, 1-800-776-4737, and the rep was able to confirm that they do have robo-calls of this nature currently going out. I told them they either have a serious problem in their customer service dept, or a serious security breach. I gave them the 866-840-4246 # that called me, and they will be looking into it specifically and getting back with me to confirm it was actually progressive.
Long story short: it appears to be a legit call from Progressive conducted in an absolutely ridiculously shady manner.- Caller: Progressive
- cjIn this case it does appear to have been Progressive but I didn't believe it mainly because they've always only contacted me via email in the past! I refused to call the 866-840-4246 number provided in the voicemail though and called the contact number from my policy instead. It turns out they did need to update our license info because we moved to a different state and they neglected to request that info when we changed the policy. HOWEVER I agree with other people who have posted ....***you really can't be too careful!!!***

- HollieThis number has called me 3 times. I called back to see who it was. They claimed they were Progressive. I am not with Progressive. My parents are with Progressive. I am not on the same policy as my parents. The number that they keep calling is a new number. & its bot that keeps calling. So I know this number is scam.
- Caller: Progressive.
- Call type: Telemarketer
- Hollie replies to StarAgreed. If they can't leave a message than it isn't important & its a scam.
- joeI had a call from this number claiming they were Progressive. When they asked for information, it sounded extremely sketchy. I called back Progressive myself, and they were able to confirm that the original robocall did come from them. However, I still would not recommend giving out personal info on this type of robocall. I informed them of how sketchy that was and they said they would send that up the chain...
- Allie MGot a call from this number. They called twice, didn't leave a message. They called a third time and left a confusing message about calling back and entering a confirmation number to get my message from progressive. I googled the number, found this site and went online and chatted with a progressive representative. She said it definitely was not Progressive and that they do not call as part of their marketing strategy. She said they would be looking into the number and that I should not give my information to these people.
- Caller: Not progressive
- ConcernedThis is a phishing scam. I just called progressive to see if they needed anything from me and they said everything was fine with my policy. Do not provide them with personal info.
- BotheredI got a voice mail saying "this is an important message from progressive for {my first and last name} - please call 866-840-4148 and enter message code # ...... to retrieve your message. Thank you from progressive direct insurance company... or one of it's corporate affiliates. goodbye!"
The number they left (866-840-4148) doesn't seem to be a Progressive number nor is it listed on their website... customer service is the somewhat similar 877-280-8418 or 800-776-4737 (800-Progressive). When I called that number just to see who answers, the recording said "welcome to the progressive message retrieval center." I hung up and called the Progressive number from their website, and they said nothing is wrong with my account. They were super nice, but didn't seem to care that much that this happened. They did opt me out of sharing my info at least. Not sure how much that helps after the fact though.
Definitely shady and creepy since they had my full name on there (and pronounced it correctly, which most people don't on first attempt). Thanks all for the warning, otherwise I may have been naive for a second. - crazo"toll-free"
is simply another all-americant way of dialing for dollas
we never answer them
and do not offer them a choice of leaving a voicemail
forgetaboutit - confusedI received a call from this number twice today, I searched the number, was brought to this sight, at which time I called progressive, since we do have a policy with them. Now, when I called, the representative did mention that they do have automated calls go out, and that there was (sort of a problem) with my policy. We live in one state and have vehicles registered in two states (my husband is in the military, one in the state we live in and one in his home of record). We both carry drivers licences from his home of record (which is also where I am from). She did say that it is possible that the call could have been in regards to that. The reason I calle them is because we also just moved, (only a few blocks) and I failed to update our address.

- TaylorI CONFIRMED WITH PROGRESSIVE. THIS NUMBER IS LEGITIMATE. I received a call from this number. Did not answer. No message was left. I decided to call back. An auto message instructed me to call 1-800 Progressive to update my DL info. I called Progressive and a representative explained that this is a courtesy call prior to the renewal period to make sure information is up to date so as not to create any renewal issues. My license state and the state where my insurance comes from are different; therefore, I received this call to see if anything had changed.

- Joe866-840-4246 is a legitimate call from Progressive. I just got the call. It was an automated message saying something like, "This is Progressive... you may have a driver's license in a state other than..." Then it directed me to a customer service rep. She asked for my first and last name, then asked for my birthdate. She then asked for my new driver's license number. I gave it to her, because I do have a new drivers license. After hanging up I thought, "That's weird, she never asked for my policy number."
I called 1-800-progressive to confirm that they did just change my license number in their system. This new customer service rep was even abel to tell me the name of the other rep that I had talked to. So if this is a scam, it's pretty damn sophisticated. They would have to make fake robo call recordings, have multiple women posing as service reps, and hijack progressive's phone number (1-800-progressive). I kinda doubt that. This is a legit call, but Progressive should always ask for your policy number to identify you.- Caller: Progressive Insurance
- SteveGot a call @ 1021 & left no message. No clue who it was.
- AnnoyedI got the same phone call listed above on my voicemail. I called back, and when I did, it had me press "1" to speak with a representative. They somehow knew the state that I had a Drivers license in a few months prior, and when I asked why they wouldn't have my new info (since I had originally signed up with progressive with it), the woman explained that sometimes when their system reloads, your old State's DL # will appear. Like an idiot, I gave my new DL#.
Then she said it looked like they didn't have my profession in their system, but that she could could get me an additional discount depending on what my profession is. I said I would do that at a later time, though she tried convincing me that it would only take a moment - I said no thanks.
When I got off the phone, I thought the last part seemed a little odd, so I emailed progressive to see if they called me and they said:
I am not showing that we've called you regarding your drivers license number.
If we need anything in the future we will email you or send you a letter.

.... So lesson of the story - dont give people information and check the website's information before calling random numbers like that back.- Caller: "Progressive"
