Luckily my receptionist intercepted the call from this loser (Ed) of bookwhirl.com. Same slick attempts to try to get to speak with me. That is, first pretending to show interest in my book. Only when my secretary insisted (and insisted) did he divulge that he wants to market the book. And even then he didn't indicate it was for a fee (made it seem free). Bottom line: stay away from Book Whirl or Book World or whatever they call themselves. Comes across as a pretty unethical/shady organization to me. Stay away from them ...

I live in California.  When I heard the phone ring at 7:45AM with a garbled message about a book I had written, I figured this was too good to be true, and sure enough...after checking this website, it certainly was a scam call.  Most companies connected with publishing asking you to PAY for their services, along with this 877 number, are scam-artists to the max.  Thanks for this informative site.

So glad I checked on this number, which led me here, before deciding if I should call back: I have my answer: no bloody way! Thanks to all who posted on this site.

I also got a call from 18772071679 ext. 337 to my home number a few minutes ago. They were asking for my father and had me confirm that he wrote the book. I couldn't understand the guy's name he sounded oriental and when he said the number it was like one-uh eight-uh zeven zeven two oh zeven one sixuhhhh seven nine. The accent was very extreme. After seeing these posts I called the number from my cell phone (*67'd) and the man's voice was not as heavily accented at all, just barely, but it got stronger every time he said his name, which I made him repeat a few times. It sounded like zed or ed.
Basically, the whole thing's very sketchy. Don't trust Book World.
side note- I called back seconds after the first call, he seemed to have no recollection of the call until I gave him a first and last name... of course.

THANK you everyone for posting your info regarding this scammer. I love sites like this and I so appreciate people who take the time to add their voice. Truly helps uncomplicate silly stuff like people who call with fake deals. :)

My daughter took a message yesterday (12/13/2010).  I was to call Shan Daniels at 877-207-1679, ext 332, about my book Moving a Puddle.  I do have such a book, but it's six years old and I have a newer better book.  I tried to call, but figured it was to late in the day.  Got a message to try again later.   Decided to look and see whether it was someone I could just e-mail, and found this page.

I have to agree with the above posts. They were very helpful. When I got the message, I could barely understand the person let alone the website address. When I called, I got a very unclear recording. I then checked the number and came to this site with these posts. I have since refused to take any more calls from them; it appears they are scam artists who are seeking to prey on people's hopes and aspirations. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!

I just received the same message.  This time from a female with an oriental voice and garbled message about a book I had self published.  I can't understand how she got its name as I have never marketed it.  Clearly a scam.  Thank you for the above posts.  They called themselves McCall.com with the same phone number and extension 332.

I've received 4 calls from "Jen Daniel" at ext 332.  Tried returning calls twice, unsuccessfully.  Will be very, very wary.

Slurred message but the name was clearly Melissa Adams.  After checking this site, I won't try to contact them of course.  Surprising that a sales/scam organization uses such garbled messages.

    Thanks Guys,

Book Whirl is still in business. They called me around 6:30 pm EDT yesterday evening (6/01/2011) and left a message requesting a call back. You SAVED me a great deal of time. Report a phone call from 877-207-1679.

    Thanks for sharing,

Same story extension 332. I called to inquire and I got to listen to beautiful new-age music after pressing 0 for information on the company.
Eventually I decided to play a  new age cd of my own on my cd player and hung up (better stereo quality of the music).
    God Bless!

Thank you to all who posted here. I googled the phone number and it brought this up. I'm so glad I didn't waste my time calling them back. Shame on these people who try to take advantage of others.

Thanks to all of you for the info. At first it sounded like someone was questioning the title I used in the book and challenging it. My call was from Melissa Adams and the extension was 323. That's about all I understood from the message. I remember a few years ago hearing about them on another site.

Thanks so much for all these responses. I had a message today from Jen (I think) Daniels, asking for me by name as the author of Second Death, which is indeed my book. She mentioned BookWhirl (although I wouldn't have known that without others of you saying that). Her extension was 332. That company really should get better quality headsets. :) It sounded like she was talking through cheesecloth.

Same thing!!!  Website and person's name completely unintelligible on the message.  If this company were legit, why would they need to make it so you couldn't hear the name of the website???

I received a call very similar to everyone else. This was from a lady named Melissa Adams. My series of books, A Redneck's Guide, is available on the internet and I assumed she was a potential customer. Before calling her back, I did a general search for her number and came across this page. Glad I did - saved me hours of listening to a scammer. Thank everyone for posting.

Just received a garbled call from a young woman.  Couldn't really understand any of it but the number was fairly clear so did a reserve number look up and found these other calls......also the call came with "Private" caller ID and I don't  answer calls with that designation and let it go to voice mail.

Just got a garbled call with this number as a call back with ext 332 noted.  Thanks for the background.  I will not be expecting anything good from these people.
