- Kathy replies to VeritasI just called the B of A number on the back of my card, and the fraud department confirmed that these numbers were legitimate. I am not a part of the fraud. Anyone can check for themselves, as I did.
- Mojorisn replies to BanksVerified. I called BoA to check and it turned out a fraud alert was triggered when I bought something for $600 with a shipping address to a different city.
If you get this alert, think through a very recent big purchase that could trigger an alert.
Mine was totally legit. - NotMyRealNameThis appears to be legitimate. (in my scenario)
Text from 35422 Read:
"FREE TEXT: Bank of America has temporarily restricted the use of debit card ending in XXXX. Cal 1.877.248.6278 to verify. To opt out of text alerts reply STOP."
Note I also received an email from Bank of America stating "We detected unusual activity on your Bank of America debit card on 07/30/2014. For your protection, please verify this activity so you can continue making debit card transactions without interruption."
The email it came from was onlinebanking@ealerts.bankofamerica.com
Sure enough I logged into the BOA website and my card was not active. (sorry didn't grab the text, but it said something about fraud and whatnot blah blah)
I had made 3 purchases yesterday. A gas station in one town, a grocery store 30 miles away, and bought some tickets to a festival online. The only piece of information the guy asked for was my BOA online userID. That seemed shady so instead of providing it I asked how do I know this call is legit. He said hang up and call the number on the back of my card, with that being said I provided my userID. He validated my last 3 purchases, and said he would be cancelling my card and sending a new one.
I was informed that they have been notified by law enforcement that a vendor's credit card database had been compromised and my card was one of the numbers. Another poster was told this also.
The guy even validated my home address to which he would ship the card. Like others said, either this is a VERY well thought out scam or it was legit. I vote legit. Since it's near the end of the month and bills are coming up I asked if the card could be activated again until the new card arrives. They extended it out 5 days and the new card will arrive in 2-3 days. Once they said they would extend it I refreshed my BOA page and the card was active again.
Moons aligned and I feel safe that this whole thing was legit. Most likely brought on by my purchases in different locations. Oh well, all is good. - LCI got a text from BoA and called the number 307-224-4954 and it asked for my card number and info. I called BofA and theyy said it was a phishing number. I called the # back and there's an automated message saying this was a phishing trick. Don't fall for it!
- Eric replies to KatyI received the text and called BoFA @ 800-432-1000 which is the number on the back of my debit card and the rep I spoke with confirmed that the 877-248-6278 is in fact their Fraud Protection hotline number. So no, Chairman is not a scam. You can call BoFA directly yourself and confirm.
People on this site really need to do research before throwing the word "scam" at people. - 8772486278| 1 replyI got the following text message on my cell on 9/1/14 -- "FREE TEXT: Bank of America has temporarily restricted the use of your debit card ending in ----. Call 1-877-248-6278 to verify. To opt out of text alerts reply STOP."
Then I went to the 7-11 store and used my Bank of America debit card so it's obviously not a real text from BofA.
Although the phone number they left does seem like a real BofA business number, it's probably just a data phishing scheme, perpetrated by someone who has my cell number.- Caller: 8772486278
- 8772486278 replies to 8772486278Update on 9/1/14 at 9:55am -- I called the number ON THE BACK of the BofA debit card to double check if they actually sent the above text message to me. It turns out BofA DID send it to me. It was NOT a data phishing scheme. After I verified the recent activity they lifted the restriction on the debit card.
- RianThis happens to be a legitimate call. But instead of calling the number from the txt you must have gotten, call the number at the back your card. It should be safer and lesser nuisance.
When I called the number, a representative with very thick foreign accents was trying his best to communicate with me, asking all kinds of informations. Not only I couldn't believe him, I didn't sound right that he's asking from my name to SSN. He simply hung up after he said "call the number on back your card when you are ready."
Turns out my credit card information was part of a compromised database, and they want to replace it just to be sure. This time the representative did not ask all the informations, instead she gave me ones and asked me verify them. No need to read my SSN out loud anymore.
I don't know anything about anti-fraud policy in BoA, but seriously though they need to make themselves look less shady.- Caller: BoA

- bobthis is a legitimate call/text, although as others have said, always call the number on the back of your debit or credit card. i actually had called the number listed from the text and later called the number from the back of my card and they both had me end up in the same place. although the first person forgot to actually take the restriction off of my card, and the second (calling the number on my card) had said that i had for sure spoken to a BOA fraud representative. there system had documented that. they never asked for any identifying information specific to being able to access my banking information from a criminal point of view, so it calmed my nerves knowing that so in the end, yes, legitimate number, although i would use the 1 800 432 1000 number instead.

- Katy lies replies to KatyIt's not a scam, katy, you dolt. There are a lot of scams out there, but this is not one of them. A healthy dose of skepticism is a good thing, but katy is a glutton.
- BobGot a text listing the -6278 number. Ignored that and called the BOA main customer service #. They confirmed that my debit card had been reported by either law enforcement or a retailer (but they didn't know who), and they gave me a direct number into their fraud department of 877-833-5617. My card would only be good for another 20 days while a new card was being mailed to arrive in 7-10 business days. It was explained the -6278 number is a direct extension from a BOA fraud agent. HOWEVER, don't believe me or take this post as an OK: I would never respond to such a text with any phone number, instead I logged onto BOA's web site and started with a valid customer service number.

- irol relohsI received a text. It said Bank of America had currently restricted the use of my debit card. I don't have a Bank of America account. I use a local bank that call me immediately if I have any suspicious activity. I'm going to call the # and see what's up and repost tonight or tomorrow. If anyone has had something like this recently. Please post your experience

- NancyI was going to call the number that was sent to through a text however I opted out and called my Bank of America. They sent me to the fraud department how ever my call was dropped. So I called the number on the back of my card and Im currently talking to Gil, a specialist on the department and he's just asking me questions.

- common senseIf you say this is legit, why are you on a site regarding spams from that number? it doesn't make any sense!
They want you to call the number on the back of the card, but I can't figure out why!!!!!! - AlshouseThis is legitimate. Of course you should be skeptical of calls and texts but I can tell you that this is quite legitimate. BofA somehow decided that my attempt to use my debit card at a gas station was suspicious so they locked my account and sent me a text message saying I had to call the number to unlock it. I called it and got right through. A man asked me about my attempt to use my card at the gas station and I said yes it was me, so he unlocked the account and I was able to fill up. This happened within seconds of my swiping my card, rather than just out of the blue, which would have really made me skeptical.

- A Customer 2 replies to VeritasI get daily SMS messages from BOA. Depends on your account with them and the settings on your profile. And yes, I too got a text as described by the others here, from 354-22 saying my card had been temporarily restricted and to call 877-248.6278 'to verify'. I called customer service instead. Getting a replacement card. I have had text message scam attempts in the past from different banks. You just have to be cautious, and call the bank fraud department to check up on it.
- wendy jrec'd a text that had 3 transactions and two were fraudulent. i went to boa website and in fact these charges were on my account. i froze my card and called the number on the boa website not the one texted to me just in case.

- KingIt's a total scam. How do I know? I DO NOT HAVE A BofA ACCOUNT! Never have!

- TerryI don't have Bank of America, so it's not them!
