- Alfalfa replies to SerenaConsumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

Regards to a check fraud case. We are scheduled on coming out to your place of residence to serve you as well as the other parties involved. You can contact the claim office directly prior to us getting out there. If you wish to make other arrangements or have any questions prior to delivery. Their number would be 877-877-0326. Case (deleted) Otherwise we will be there as scheduled. If you're not home at that time. We'll be escorted to your place of employment. All parties left to make themselves available for service and signature upon arrival. And I must advise you that this has been your legal notification. Thank you"

- theedaaI got a call from this 877-877-0326 comapny back in Janruary 2012 stating that they were going to serve me papers for check fraud. He also told me I had 30 minutes to find the money and call him back, which I did not. Then yesterday 3/5/12 I got another call from them but this guy was David Briggs or Bridge stating the same thing. He also called a friend of mine and left her a message. I am studying Criminal Justice and not one court or legal service calls to let you know that you are going to be served legal papers. A constable just shows up at your house to serve you. So with that I believe that this is truly a scam but someone needs to check into it, now.

- my reply to the god jerk replies to godget a life jerk there are scammers out there who call people trying to get money out of them. Ive never had a loan so I know its a scam and a scare tactic so u must have no life to go trolling around these blogs and making stupid comments to people who may have legitimate reason to suspect a scam. Unfortunately these people exist only to scam honest people out of their hard earned money so get a life.
- CBSC replies to KKBlue88Hey Blue that is the exact message they left me and they called from an Unknown number. Ive gotten these before so knew it was a scam. It amazes me that these jerks can sound so convincing. They even named a friend of mine that they were going to so called serve. How the heck did they get her name I will never know. Ive never been involved in any check fraud either so these jerks need to be stopped.
- LLReceived a call on my cell on 03/08/2012 identical to the one KKBlue88 received, except the caller (David Briggs) gave a case number. Don't know how this so-call David Briggs got my cell number. He was threatening my son and also called my son's employer. Neither my son nor I have any outstanding loans. I wish there was something that could be done about these scammers. Even if they are reported to the Attorney General's office, FTC, FCC, and Public Service Commission, those offices would probably be unable to do much since the scammers just start up with a different number. It is a shame that such people can prey on unsuspecting people in order to scare them into sending money.
- Caller: County Legal Services?? What county??
- christie replies to Karii received that same message today how do we stop them
- Pam replies to LizJust received this same call yesterday. Called them because I don't have checks nor have I written a hot check. It appears to be a collection agency. They said if I wouldn't send them money to get an attorney and they will be serving me. I told them I will wait to receive the service from who ever is bringing the papers.

They also wanted my debit card number, social security number, and routing number from my checking account. I said I wanted an email or letter from them on letterhead and still have not gotten it. I am calling the Attorney General and the FBI.
- JoeThis David guy called my cell phone, listing me and my mother as parties in a check fraud case. Then he called my mother's cell, listing her and me in a check fraud case. My mother called back... my name wasn't in the file all of a sudden... then he said the last 4 of the social was 0531. Thats not the last 4 digits of my mom's social. He said, "Well do you know your own social security number!?" (attitude).. my mom said yes but you aren't getting it. He said Forget It and hung up. I'ma keep calling these ppl until they block me. I'm off work today, so I got time. LOL
- JaneMy mom recieved a phone call today naming me, my brother, and my boyfriend from Thomas Hooper Legal Services regarding check fraud. He said he needs to have us served at home and we are on his list to be served and they will go to our place of employment to be served. They had our dates of birth and our middle names. At the end of the call, he says, "Good Luck!"
