lamet-most of your information is correct. However, a person's request for validation is not limited to within the first 30 days after the debt collector first sends their dunning letter stating you have 30 days to respond.

If you read the applicable law, it only states that 30 days after the initial letter, the debt collector may consider it valid. Just because the debt collector considers it valid does not make it so. You can request validation at any time that you first become aware of the debt. Unless the debt collector has a signed return receipt confirmation showing you received such contact, no time frame is valid.

You might run your credit reports and find debts listed you know nothing about. You can request validation at that point. Or you might not be aware of said debt until you are actually served with a summons and complaint to appear in court. You can request validation during those proceedings. And if you handle your requests in a certain manner, you could even turn the table on the debt collector and sue them for fraudulent credit reporting and/or debt collection practices.

An excellent website which has a wealth of information on debt collection and credit reporting in plain english, as well as explaining exactly how to proceed with debt validation is located here:

Just got a call from this number and it's almost 9 p.m.  They asked for someone named Diane Clark.  I have no idea who that is and told them to remove our number from their list.

I have been receiving calls from this number for weeks and have not answered!  They don't leave a message.  Today they called at 8:20am!  I answered to tell them not to call that early again!  Turns out it was a wrong number.  They asked for someone I have never heard of.  I told them to remove my number from the list and he asked, what list?  I told him the person he is looking for does not live here an not to call again! I plan to file a report with FTC if the calls continue!

Answered the phone and nobody was there.  Normally don't answer my phone because it's nothing but debt collectors.  Don't owe any past due debts but I've been getting calls for 7 years for this individual Diane Jenkins who has been using my phone number which I assume used to be hers (moved into new construction 7 years ago).  For a while I thought they would stop and now I've had this number for so long, I don't want to change it. You would think in this day and age of Google, these [***] would be able to figure out that the phone number is no longer Diane Jenkins.  She's a real slug...once I was getting collection calls form the local supermarket where she had written a bad check.  I had to tell the cops sorry not me....

They weren't rude, but they've called at least twice today.  They keep asking for Diane Jenkins.  Diane Jenkins is apparently a scammer who is giving out her (now mine) old phone number even now.  A simple google of my phone number would show these idiots that we are now the owners.  Seven long years of daily phone calls and messages left for Diane Jenkins.  I waited because who wants to change phone numbers that all their family, friends, businesses, doctors have?  Thinking it would all go away after a year or two...nope...and now my life is even more defined by that one number.  These latest idiots bought her bad debt which she must have a ton of and rather than using automation they actually make the calls.  The last call was from a woman who wanted to verify MY name...Ahh..... I don't think so.  I have to be careful because sometimes I think I'm at work and answer, Hello, this is so and so speaking....even if someone writes off her debt...she continues to get more debt...doesn't anyone run a credit report anymore before lending someone money or extending credit.  Shouldn't her 7 year old debt die by now....

    Concern
Just received a strange call from this number, he was very hard to understand.  I believe he is from India; he gave me 4 numbers and asked if it was the last 4 number of my social security.  I asked him why is he asking me about social secuirty numbers and what is this call about.  Like I said he was very hard to understand and did not get much out of him.

After he hang up with me, I called the number back and spoke to a young lady.  I asked her what company just called me and she told me the call was from a PRIVATE number; she also stated that they handle several companies.

I then called my local Police Department and told them what I experience, and they told me it sounded like a scam.  They advise me to check my Credit Report to see if there has been any questionable activity on it.  They also said it was good that I did not give then any information.

The Only Way To Stop These Kinds Of Calls Is To Make Them Pay. Always Answer - They Have To Pay For Completed Call.  Keep Them Talking As Long As Possible With Fake Info So They Have To Pay More.

    US PS Certified Mail number  7010 1870 0000 7104 3900

At 8:37PM CST today, I received a call from you at XXX-XXX-XXXX from the number 888-226-1843 and did not leave a message. I called back and I asked who this was and what they wanted. She mumbled her name and company then didn't ask what phone number I was calling from, then she asked my name. I said, "I'm not telling you who I am, YOUR company called ME, tell ME who YOU are". She yelled, very rudely, "I already told you..Angela from VSC! What is your name?" (she still never asked for my telephone number). I figured it was irrelevant since it was probably a wrong number, so giving my name would turn up nothing. Even if this is a legitimate debt (which I doubt) this was still very rude and unprofessional behavior.

This letter will serve as your legal notice under provisions of federal law, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), to cease telephone communication with me in regard to this debt. I also want an explanation of the debt and to whom it is owed sent to me by postal mail and/or email to the contact information above.
If you fail to heed this notice, I will file a formal complaint against you with the Federal Trade Commission who is responsible for enforcement, the States Attorney General office and/or the American Collectors Association or local State Bar Association.
You are also notified that should any adverse information be placed against my/our credit reports as a result of this notice that appropriate actions will be taken. Give this very important matter the attention it deserves.

    Sincerely,
