    HIGHLYirritated
I received a "private number" call on my cell phone from a woman claiming to be a summons officer who told me that I needed to call this 888 number and reference a "case" number that she gave me when I called. The 888 number was answered "corporate" and when I asked what this was in reference to, the man said it was in reference to a citibank credit card that I paid off back in 2004. He said that they had no record of the payoff and that I was going to be sued by Citibank for the balance due. I told him to send me that summons in writing ASAP otherwise I thought this was fraud. He said this was not fraud and he would get me the paperwork ASAP, I asked him when that would be, he said ASAP, and I asked if there were someone else that he works with that could do it sooner so I would know when to expect the summons and he hung up on me.

I did get that he works for attorneys with LM Associates in CA, supposedly.

I asked him his name, he told me Ron D.

These people can kiss my white ass if they think they can out-smart me.

DO NOT GIVE ANY OF THESE A$$HOLES ANY OF YOUR INFORMATION. THEY ARE TRYING TO STEAL YOUR IDENTITY.

I have already contacted Citibank's Fraud and Security department and my local police.

I recieved a call telling me I was going to be served papers on a debt that started out from an overcharge in 2004 of less than $20.  At that time I attempted to settle the debt because of a work injury and loss of my job. Perhaps because they were adding about $100. a month to the bill they wouldn't work with me.  Now I get a ph call saying I was served notice by Phone to appear in court in a state I haven't lived in for almost 4yr. When I asked what court he said he didn't have that info. So I called the district and municiple court where they said I Had to go and wes told it is not legal to serve papers on the phone.  I notified the Att. Gen. in CA. where there office is supposed to be, the Att. Gen. in the state where I live, and the Att.Gen. in the state they named.  I have recieved corespondance back from all three saying this is not legal. They never said they were a debt colection company. they did sat there roll was to inform me of the summons and appear the next day in court or pay the bill.  So that $20. has become $5,000.

ok so i get a phone call from a 909-212-6675 today and all it says is riverside ca.  I picked up because i was waiting on an insurance quote.  Well they didn't ask if I was the person they were asking for.  they said that "she " needed to be home within the next hour cause "she" was getting summond to court and so on and so forth.  i said what is this about, and they said it's in a sealed envelope we don't know but here's a phone number and a case number. i said well what address do you have, and they told me, i never.......i mean "she" never lived at that address, in fact the address they gave me doesn't exist on the that road anywhow.  so i said ok and hung up the phone.

so i said since they gave me a case number i called the court house and told them about the conversation and gave them the case number.  they said that's not even a case file number they would use and it's def. not there.  hmmmm, that'

THIS IS SUCH A JOKE!!! The first time they called me several months ago a woman with a heavy accent (Middle Eastern maybe?) just started screaming at me that "I was in a huge legal mess!" I laughed at her and she hung up. They called again today and when I returned the phone call I immediately told the man who answered that I had to make him aware that I was recording the call. He asked me to hold. Several minutes later the SAME man picked up and said "Legal Department". I laughed and asked "Aren't you the man I just talked to?" He said "No this is the legal department. How can I help you?" I told him that I was returning their call but I legally had to make them aware that I would be recording the conversation. He said he didn't give me permission to do that. I told him that only a scam would deny permission and to stop calling me. He hung up. WHAT A BUNCH OF LIARS! DON'T FALL FOR THIS! Immediately tell them that you will be recording the conversation and I guarantee that they won't want to talk. They certainly don't want to give you any legal evidence to give to the Attorney General. CREEPS!

How do you sleep at night? If I worked for a company that lied and used such see-through scare tactics...well never mind, I'D never work for a company like that! You should be ashamed of yourself, I'm sure your parents are.

This also happened to me, i got a note  from my human resource manager stating a man called my work from 1-888-541-8058 and a sherriff would be out that night to serve me  a warrant, when i returned the call a very angry voice picked up the phone and would not reveal the company's name or address and demanded to set up payments, i called the number back 10 times to get a name or address and different people answered but only become more threating.

While there is a bill that you once owed this company is still acting illegally in how they collect it. The actual account is legit, but their practices are not. They are not allowed to add money to your original balance (which they do), they are not allowed to say that you are being sued if they have no intentions on actually doing it, they cannot call you and tell you that they are serving you with papers (because they are not it's a threat tactic). They will give you a number to call the company that is "taking you to court" so called, but it is still the "process servers dept" you are just taking to someone else. I agree with people in the fact that if you owe money you should pay it, but the fact that this company is collecting illegally it just BS... They should be sued themselves for their illegal practices!!!!!!!!

A legitimate company would follow federal and state laws and this company by far does the complete oposite. I dont even know how they are still in business!!!!

    The bill is yours.
    They bought it.
    You still owe it.
But they are trying to scare you.
They have no intensions of taking you to court.
They do have intentions on scaring you so bad that you pay the bill!
These people work off of commission only!

April they are just trying to scare your son! There is really a bill, they really bought it, and they are really trying to collect it illegally. I am sure that your son did have a checking accout that he does owe money on, but this company adds money to bill. So maybe your son owed a couple hundred dollars. This company may have added $500-$1k to the balance. While the bill is probably on his credit and it is his decision to pay, I would talk to your attorney general or an attorney to let them know about this company's illegal practices. As parents we say to our children to pay their bills and I am a firm believer in paying what you owe, but a legitimate agency would not practice this way. There are laws and pocedures in place for bill collectors, process servers, and legal offices (attorneys, legal aids, paralegals), none of their practices fits the bill!

I keep getting calls from this number. They claim to be LM partners and they are a debt collection company. They said I have to pay a certain amount or they will serve me with a summons. I have only had a call from them. Nothing in the mail. This is from a credit card supposedly in 2006. I haven't moved so why not contact by mail explaining what its for. I have gotten nothing from the credit card company at all. How do I know that this is legit

Uh, ALL legal agencies would want a toll-free number (and they are real numbers) to make it easier for you to call them.  Most collection companies operate in many states as well, and would want to have the same number for all states.

Moreover, collection companies are forbidden to lie - which includes making threats which they don't intend to carry out.  However, if they plan to sue you for all you're worth, they can say "We'll sue you for all you're worth."  If they plan on putting a lein on your home, then they can say "We'll put a lein on your home."  However, if they have no plan to do anything more than send letters and make phone calls, they can not say these things.

Really?  You know for sure that they bought the debt?  You're sure they're not for real?  I hope you're sure because some people will rely on your information.

I agree that the BBB, Chambers of Commerce, and Attorney General's Office should be contacted.

Yes, please forward the law on this.  I've never know of any such law.

In fact, federal law has no 4-year limitation on the time it take to collect a debt.  The law may limit certain activities, and a court may throw out a case based on time passed, but there is no limit.  States may have other laws which govern specific actions and time-frames in collection law.

However, acknowledging a debt may re-start the 6year 9 month clock on your credit bureau report again.  Consider that the collection company must endure costs in order to sue you.  The smaller the debt, the less likely they are to sue.

And don't be too comfortable if "they can't get blood out of a stone", because someday you may not be a stone and they may collect decades later.

Also, consider the type of debt.  Some retailers made you agree by contract that they can impose fees, have no end term to collection, and that you can not go bankrupt against the debt.  Taxes, student loans, and other debts are also not subject to bankruptcy and other laws.

They MIGHT be unlicensed.  Constables, Sheriffs and Process Servers don't TYPICALLY collect money - but they can; they are also the trustees of said collections as well.  Bottom feeding debt collectors, as rare as they are, do collect money from people who don't know better, and from people who do know better.  More ofter, upstanding bill collectors perform this much needed task.

Wrong.  Not paying a debt is a crime.  It is a breach of contract; a contract is a legal document.  Many people are in jail right now because they didn't pay their debt; those people are typically the exception, and the debt involved is typically a government debt, but it can, and does, happen.

Debt collectors are not permitted to leave the reason for their call on an answering machine or with anyone except the debtor and spouse (not the spouse in MA), or a third party as previously authorized only.  If they're told not to call, most will stop calling; if they are informed in writing, they must stop.
