I know that 800-555-1212 was used for directory information for toll free information, however I do not believe the number is still use in use today.

At one time calling any number starting with the 555 prefix was answered by directory information (411 & 555-1212). I discovered this after calling a number I heard on TV. Being a kid I think I tried other numbers with the 555 prefix and they all went to directory information.

Asked him to take me off of his list and he told me it wasn't going to happen.

Got a call from this number, which I recognized as the number used years ago for directory assistance along with the area code for the state you wanted a phone number listing for.  I picked up the line, but all I heard was a dial tone.  No way to report them since this is not a good phone number.

I received a phone call from this number today and, of course, there was no message on my answering machine.  I always say, if it's not important enough to give me your name and phone number and the reason you called then, you get blocked. But, I am going to tell you all one more bit of information....back in the days before we had clocks that set themselves, we used to call a number to find out the exact time.  I remember that the last 4 numbers were 1  2  1  2 but, I don't remember the first 3 number of the phone number.  When I saw this number on my caller ID, that was the first thing that I thought of.  And, if you all think about it, on TV whenever anybody gives a phone number to call them at, it's always starting with 555....remember?  It's got to be a total scam so, along with hundreds of other numbers, this one will also be blocked.  It obviously does no good to register with the DoNotCall list because, nobody is afraid of getting caught so, look the number up, if it's listed on this site, I would trust others that it must be spam.  If they don't leave a message, block the number...simple.

It is still in use by AT&T. Try it. :o)

CALLER ID: UNKNOWN NAME  Machine answered and a dude, thinking he had a real live victim, called out my name twice and then hung up after no response.  Very loud call center background noise.

Live person with lots of background noise claimed to be offering free estimates of home repair; mentioned the street the phone account was registered to.

Caller didn’t leave a message on my machine and the caller id said “Out of Area” which probably means scammer/telemarketer since every legitimate business I know leaves a message. Also, this is a Toll Free 888 phone number so why wouldn't caller id say that unless this is a fake. So I ran 3 reverse traces using 3 types of traces and all were completely blocked. No person or business name, no general location(City, County, State, Country etc.) and no service providers showed up. A legitimate business would never hide their identity and location by blocking a trace. This is the worse kind of scammer that is probably operating from a foreign country that is either spoofing dead phone numbers and/or using a Voip system while phishing for personal information and running some type of scam(s) (i.e. Microsoft or Mac Tech or Rep claiming you have a virus etc.). This is an extremely high tech scammer so beware.  DO NOT ANSWER AND DO NOT CALL BACK FOR ANY REASON. Block and report to the proper authorities.

Called, no message left, number blocked.  Caller ID shows caller as "Tsc Testing Profile" from Seattle; googled that name, nothing came up.

Left different phone number and said we were being prosecuted by the Treasury and said call back immediately so he could help.
