I was referred to this number as the "collections" department.  The outgoing message says they are Suntrust, but I'm dubious.

This is card member services for suntrust credit cards. I usually ignore them but lately someone has been leaving messages with a voice machine like in scary movies with this number. They need more supervision very childish! I actually called back to see who it was and they asked if I had a card and what phone number but didn't care about the prank so I lied to get off the phone! Ha Ha!!!

JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, YES THIS IS SUNTRUST AND IF YOU GET A CALL FROM THIS NUMBER IT USUALLY MEANS YOU OWE ON A SUNTRUST CREDIT CARD, UNLESS OF COURSE THEY HAVE THE WRONG NUMBER AND ARE TRYING TO CONTACT SOMEONE ELSE,

USE A CALLED ID ON YOUR PHONE SO YOU CAN SCREEN YOUR CALLS FROM CREDITORS, BECAUSE IF YOU HAD THE MONEY I AM SURE PEOPLE WOULD PAY THEIR DEBTS, THINGS HAPPEN AND SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO PRIORITIZE AND PAY THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS FIRST LIKE A MORTGAGE BEFORE A CREDIT CARD BILL, BECAUSE THAT CREDIT CARD WILL NOT KEEP A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD....

Same story, they wanted my name, phone number and credit card number. I hung up on the guy after reading half of my card number and realizing what I was doing. I don't know what this is, but a reputable company won't ask this info, they should have it.

I got a telephone cal this morning from an individual identifying themselves as Suntrust Bank.  When I asked why Suntrust Bank was calling me on a Saturday morning I was told that it was about a "personal bank matter".  I said that I could not talk to them as I thought it was a scam.  They then gave me the telephobne number of 888-893-1773 to telephone them back.  Still being suspicious I put that telephone number into google and came up with this site!

    a SunTrust Bank employee

I am a SunTrust bank employee and I can assure you this number is a legitimate contact for my department. When placing outbound telephone calls, federal law prohibits us from releasing any sensitive information regarding the reason for the call, etc to any person without sufficiently verifying their identity. This is done for protection of private information. We usually ask to confirm ONLY the LAST FOUR digits of the social security #, but can use full name with address, etc.

I understand the hesitation when you receive an unexpected phone call and someone asks you for personal information. Look at it this way, when you place a call to a company you do business with - be it SunTrust or the cable company or your cell phone provider or what-have-you - you will be required to verify your identity and account information. Same thing goes for outgoing calls.

If you call 1-800-SunTrust or go into a branch they can verify this number for you. If they are unfamiliar with that number off the top of their head - as it is a large bank with many employees and many departments - have them call us at that number for you. I can promise you this is SunTrust bank.

Legit number. I called Suntrust customer service and they verified that the number was for their collections department and that the correction to my information that the caller had requested had now been made in the system.

Again, it is a large bank. Most people will not have every number on our contact sheet memeorized. Have the STB employee call the number and ask the rep for their employee ID so they can verify it. The branch can do that as well.

We are open Saturday and Sunday. We do not work in a bank branch, we work in an office, so we do not keep branch hours. If we were only available 9-5 M-F how would we ever reach people who work during those times? :)

Same thing, a man called (on a Sunday) claiming he was with Suntrust and had an important banking matter to discuss, and needed me to verify my identity.  After refusing to give any identifying information, he told me if I was more comfortable I should stop in to a branch and discuss it.  I said, sure, I would do that.  I then proceeded to call Suntrust proper, and inform them of the scam attempt.

THE BANK DOESN'T CALL YOU ASKING FOR IDENTIFYING INFORMATION.

    Stay alert!

What if you can't pay it? My husband has the card and it pretty much got maxed out when he lost his job. Next went the house. I suppose bankruptcy might be next.  I know in bankruptcy they only charge a penny on the dollar and roll it into the total. Would STB take 3-5 cents on the dollar or would they just prefer to write it off?

BTW, we KNOW it is STB and it IS a legitimate bill.  The call is not a scam.  We know the number and just don't answer anything that is 800 or 866 or 888.

I just got a phone call from this number - woman on the other end asked me for the last four digits of my social.  Said she needed it to confirm a banking issue.

None of this makes any sense unless it was phishing.  The call was at 5:05 EST, the local bank had already closed.  Convenient.

    I will call Suntrust tomorrow.
