received letter from MAC stating we owed 769.44 also said they'd give us a break of 50% off if we paidd ASAP. The company they " bought" debt from has been out of business for a couple years. We were never sent outstanding account letter from that company. When we cancelled our contract we assumed all was done. Then 3 years later MAC Financila Company sends us letter. Spoke to Chris by phone he stated " pay what you can" which I thought odd. By the time our conversation ended he rudely threatened that within 1 month they would send account to be listed with credit reports. Can the company do this? Should we pay at all? I'm am very upset with these people. Just plain old bullies.

DO NOT PAY these guys a single cent unless you want them calling you for next 6 or 7 years because you will renew debt by paying. They will not sue you unless your debt is massive, still on your credit bureau, AND you have property in your name. They almost never take debtors to court because it's such a long and expensive process, and there is no guarantee they will receive their money.

    Hey Lindross
Every month I get at least one phone call from these guys. I saw in your post that they will not pursue court unless it's a large amount. The letter they first sent me stated I owed an amount of nearly $8000 on a very old debt. I do not own a home or have anything else they could take. Because of the amount however I'm afraid they may try. Do you think they will keep pursuing me. I have not responded to them however just today they called me on my cell and also called my work. Not sure what to do I think the debt comes off my equifax report next year. Any advice, thoughts?

If the account is more then 2 years old they can not fight you in court. If the account they're trying to collect on is not older then 2 years old; then yes they can. Also they are only allowed to call your Work place once. anything more then that is a breach and can be report to the BBB.

Just cut a deal. These knuckleheads will usually take 25-50% of the balance to get it off their backs.

    Hey Jazz,

According to what everyone else has to say, calling these people back and admitting to the debt is the worst thing to do as it opens up the window (time frame) for them to keep collecting. The way I see it, Equifax told me that it will be coming off my report sometime next year. Since my last post they have not called me back but I assume they will. Note: When I received the first letter from them it stated that I had a set amount of time to get in touch with someone at their office or it would be going to court. This was months ago and yet nothing. I will keep posting on here until this is resolved somewhat.

My partner received the same letter over a year ago. They quit calling for a while and just started calling again this week. No legal action and the debt is out of statute.

So Im a bit confused. I spoke to someone at Equifax today and they told me the debt does not come off your report in Ontario for 6 years. Meaning I will still have this debt until 2018. However I know the account I had with original company "___________" is over 2 years old. So what happens??????

Ryu...No, you've received poor advice that window only re-opens if you actually pay them (4 more years i think?). Verbally admitting to a debt doesn't do anything to you. At the end of the day, they hate calling you as much as you hate being called by them. Just throw a number at them, claim financial hardship and hope they will take a low percentage to get it off their books. GET EVERYTHING ON PAPER. Some of them are slime balls.

I want people to know that Rogers sells your mobile phone number to anyone.  I'm sure this is an invasion of my privacy.  I have not given Rogers permission to give my number to anyone.

What was the outcome?  We got the same letter at work from Mac Financial.  Not going to respond.  I don't think they'll sue.

They are coming after my husband for 5 grand stating last activity/payment was June 2010, I went through all bank statements from there and there is nothing. I reported them to service alberta for violations of the fair trading act. We asked in August for a statement of account etc as we have no idea who Pinnacle is or was... They have yet to provide it but just reported it to equifax...

My ex used to work at Mac financial so I heard about their tricks a long time ago. Do not pay a single penny. There is almost a zero percent chance of you getting sued. They are a collection agency that buys old debt for pennies on the dollar, and then uses fake legal threats to collect as much as possible. Most of the time the debts have already fallen off of your credit report, and most people don't pull theirs to on check. They love to claim they are not collectors, and that they are working for a lawyer, and that they happen to come across  some paperwork that says you are about to be sued unlss you pay this ridiculous amount because of interest. But hey they can offer you a 50% deal if you pay right away lol

Lindross was correct in stating that any paymemt, no matter how small, will renew debt statute of limitations. Therefore DO NOT PAY A CENT. Also, the ONLY way to stop them from harassing you is to send them a cease and  was as
desist letter but it HAS to be sent by registered maii. For the guys here getting calls, ignore the legal threats and send the cnd letter.c

You should note that paying off your account with them will not fix your credit rating. The damage is already done so in most cases, you are better off waiting for debt to fall off report if it hasn't done so already. So the first thing you must do is pull your current credit report. I hope I helped some you guys out there.

This is a tactic that is used at every collection agency an is taken from law enforcement. Bad cop vs good cop. Don't fall for the ploy, you'll end up paying because the good cop was so much nicer to you.
