- JB replies to JMThis is not true; if this were the case, no one would ever had an incentive to pay their outstanding bills once they reach collections. Ask the credit bureaus, they will tell you the same.
Once you pay the bill, you can ask them to update your credit bureau to show that it has been settled or paid in full. This will cause your credit rating to improve. - Calvin replies to LisaI have been going through the same thing. They are trying to collect $2402 from an old account which I had with HSBC which I paid off in 2011. I even received a letter at my work. They are scammers. They will try anything to get money from people. I reported them to the BBB.

- BrianOut of the blue I received a letter a work. Looked official. It stated I had 7 days to reply or a garnishee would be placed on my wages at 30%. I called to find out what the "F" was going on. They proceed to tell me I owe a Best Buy card to the tune of $8800 but will cut me a deal if I pay by Friday the 20th. How much I asked? They guy tells me $2400. I questioned how they could do that so he got his manager. Upon telling his manager what he had offered me the guy flipped right out. Swearing at the first guy saying he had no authority giving me that deal. I laughed and said to late. He then wanted to make it official and send me a letter with the settlement deal outlined but because they were in Toronto he wanted to email it. I smelled something fishy and googled them when I got home. I also called equifax to find out if anything was on file. Nothing with Equifax. I sent them a reply stating that and sorry about there luck buying old files and trying to collect by intimidation and harassment.

- nh replies to JBSome people run into hardships and simply can not pay back, having said that the original company has written off that debt as a loss which they can claim when filing taxes
- JMPlease take 2 minutes and read my other comments. The best advice has already been stated. If you have received a letter or are getting calls, pull your credit report and check if the debt is active. They will only sue you if the debt is still on your recent credit report and you also own property (a house or condo). For those that are too lazy too read my advice in the previous pages, just pay your debts and you won't be in this position again. If you are not the person they are looking for, send a cease and desist letter by registered mail.
- Joe CollenMost of the case, after two years, all debts can't be after because it passed the two years time limited as long as you never reply or paid any amount of money to the credit card. Your record will be keep six years and clear again.

- MJG replies to ERIC| 2 repliesSince the letter was mailed, take it and the envelope to the post office & forward it to the postal inspectors. They may have a regulation to deal with that.
- BigA replies to MJGCanada has extensive debt collection laws that sort of mirror out FDCPA. It varies by Provence however.
- BigA replies to ERICI would take the time to research debt collection laws in the Province where you live.

- BigA replies to craigToo bad your advice is 2 years too late.
- Burned replies to craig| 10 repliesNot true, they sued me for a bill that was originally only $4500 but by the time it got to court it was over $19,000! And then when I went to sell my house, they had a lien on it and I had to end up paying the whole amount. I was gutted.
- Burned replies to MM| 39 repliesI thought they were bluffing too until they obtained a judgment against me for over $19,000! When the original bill was $4500??? They put a lien on my house and when I went to sell it, I had to pay the whole amount. So I ended up losing money on the house sale.

Sorry but that is one whopper of a fairy tale. You just failed at trying to scare anyone with that lie. But at least your screen name speaks the truth because your are now BURNED AS A STUPID SHILL! - Yoda1725 replies to BurnedSo, you received a judgement against you without any court proceedings. Too bad you never finished high school, now, you cant find a legitimate job. You now have to "work" for a criminal enterprise.
