OMG, I cannot believe there are still people out there in boiler rooms trying to scam people this way. When I was a receptionist all the way back in 1999 I was warned that I would get calls of this nature and not to fall for for them. My only call was from a young girl who tried her very best to sound businesslike. She used a lot of "business-speak" like, "Kindly provide the number affixed to your copier." Since I was expecting the call I said "OK" and started to read off a string of numbers and letters. The excitement over the phone was palpable--I suppose the phony rep was just drooling after my sale. Soon the attitude turned to "Huh?" as I just kept reading off letters and numbers. Finally the rep cut me off with a giggle and said, "That's not your copier number!" and hung up. Strangely enough, I never received any more calls. I actually regretted it as I would have enjoyed messing with them again and again.

Number comes up as "Unknown" for me Get calls from these people about 1-2 a month...they always start out by saying that they don't need "a count today" (they pose themselves as someone you have spoken to before when you have not) that they are going to send me something, and bla bla bla, they just need "something" from my copier (I don't really listen too closely) because as soon as I say I cant get to the copier, they just hang up on me. No "good bye", no "thank you for your time", nothing, just click- which tells me this is just a big scam, OR one of the most poorly trained customer service companies EVER.

There is another scam about light bulbs. My friend was dept manager and they had a list of places they had bought bulbs from to never buy from again because they were cheap crap. One guy called and was told they weren't buying his bulbs anymore so the guy asked why. So my friend hung up and called a different company and asked for the same guy by name. When he came on the line my friend said, that's why.

Well its been a year and no peep from these scammers until today. Erin sounded sweet as can be and acted as though she was my rep for my copiers. Oh wait it would be believable if we had copiers!! I didnt even get into the frivlous argument and just hung up on her.

Used to get these all the time - they'd try to make it sound like we have a service contract with them but just need to verify the model # of our copier. Asking them for our (non-existant) account number always mades them hang up! On the rare occasion that someone would push it and say they don't have our account number I'd ask them to explain how it is that we have a service contract with them but they don't even know the model of the copier they are supposedly servicing. That definitely made them hang up!

This is a scam! They want you give them the model number so they can create an invoice and send you a bill for a thousand dollars. They call my current company DAILY and ask for the "number on the copier" which is total crap because as soon as I ask what company they are calling with they hang up! It works everytime, just start asking them questions and they will hang up.

Old company funny tactic

What we would do at an old company I worked was this; we would transfer the call from one user to another (about 5 of us) and see how long we could keep them on the line. One catch though, we had to use odd accents when talking to them. Our record was 26 minutes.

mrah!
these idiots have me on speed dial. a few weeks ago our new receptionist gave one of them my name, not knowing about what they were wanting. whenever they ask for a serial number i just say "sure, it's F-U-C-K-Y-O-U.." and they usually hang up. well, now that this skid has my name he is on a rampage to harass me. he keeps calling back telling me "not to threaten him with a good time" - yeah buddy, i'm sure you are quite the catch, sitting in some basement with your ear piece cold calling people. please come marry me now.
i'm trying not to let them get under my skin but i would love nothing more than to punch him in the head multiple times. sigh. i really wish there was a way to track down a phone number that actually goes through to them...

Oh, yeah right...
I've been filling in for the receptionist at my job while she's on vacation. I got one of these calls today and the lady, "Amy," had the lamest sounding script ever. "Hi this is Amy, I need the model number off the front of your copier"...oh okay Amy, that's some credibility. At least attempt to make it believable! The only other time I've gotten this call, the guy at least tried to pretend he had spoken to somebody else at my company before and "was verifying the info." Of course it was still faker than a $3 bill, but he tried! Lol I'm sitting here laughing at some of your experiences though, especially the air horns...classic!

Just give them a fake brand name and model number.
Right, then these crooks will send you some overpriced crap.
Just hang up. It's so freaking simple.

Fed up!
John with Customer Service on the Copier keeps calling our office. We've also had Ashley and Steve call. One of the guys or both have cussed me out multiple times and told me to F myself. These guys need to be put in prison along with their employers. I get several calls a day from these guys some days, and then I won't hear from them for about a week or so, then they start up again. This has got to be one of the biggest scams out there right now.

We receive these calls all the time at the office. One time the man on the other line said "oh aren't you just a real charmer sweetheart" when I asked what company they were calling from. So unbelievably irritating.
