Have been getting calls from  (818} 661-6256 for a couple of months now.  I got a message once which stated he (hispanic accent) needed my name regarding an urgent matter and wanted to talk to me about my PG&E gas bill.  Didn't identify himself or explain the urgent matter.  Since I have gotten calls from this number almost every day, sometimes 1-3times a day, I do not answer this number which I immediately recognize.  Caller ID shows "unknown name" and I don't believe PG&E would have that caller ID.  Too many scams here in Fresno, CA and people coming to the door requesting personal information without introducing themselves or why they want that information.  Are these disgruntled employees?  Whats the deal.

    too busy
Me: Good Afternoon (name of business)
Caller: May I speak to the owner?
Me: He is with a customer, may I take a message?
Caller: I'm with the Florida Highway Patrol, I can speak to you also. May we send a package to your address for donations for families of fallen officers?
    Me: My husband already donated.
Caller: Our records don't show we've sent out a package to you.

Now when did I tell him my or my husbands name so he could check any records???

Don't try to figure out who's calling; just hang up and get them off your line ASAP.  No need to trace the call; don't waste your time and energy, just hang up.

For the week that my cellphone has been Mexico I've been getting a higher quantity of "Unknown" calls (most likely better blocking techniques by the carriers in the United States). Even if the telemarketer scum don't follow the Do Not Call Registry in the U.S., I don't get calls at 1:30 AM! Who would think that business model would work?

On Memorial Day, my husband received a call on his cell from a private number. I answered it.  An accented gentleman started his monologue when I interrupted him and asked  how he got this phone number.  Well, I apparently threw him off course, because he stuttered and stammered for about 10 seconds, before stating that was a very good question.  He then proceeded to tell me that friends and family gave them the number.  I knew that was a lie as the only people who have my husband's cell number besides me is the doctor's offices that he needs to be able to reach him with test results.  I informed the gentleman that there was no way he got that number through family and friends and to immediately remove the number from his system.  I then hung up on him.  My husband doesn't answer numbers unless he recognizes them.

The calls are coming in displaying no name and no number. The last call left a message to select an 8 or 1 to select a choice of options. The phony call was about zerelto or similarly named drug warning. "They" are fishing for a live number.

I just received a call from a private number.  The person was obviously not from this country (thick accent).  When I simply asked to have my name taken off the list, they asked why.  I told then they don't get to ask why, the just need to comply with my wishes.  The caller then stated that if I hung up she would call back again and again!!  After that the caller got rude and started using foul language.  There should be a way to stop this!

For some reason I'll probably never understand, I just sat and read about 12 pages of this thread (yeah, yeah, I know... get a hobby, right?).  Suddenly in the middle of it all, I was hit with (1) a fit of complete rage and (2) a question that I don't think I've ever seen asked and/or answered here (or maybe I'm just looking at the wrong threads).

    (1) Regarding my fit of rage, the BBB and other consumer protection organizations are supposedly in place to protect consumers - you and me - from shoddy workmanship, noncompliance with regulations, and outright lies and fraud.  That being the case, why oh why is there not SOME governmental body on some level of some variety that has suggested suing the telcos for breach of contract or, at the very least, substandard service?  We pay them for their service, and frankly their service sucks!  If your garbage company showed up every Wednesday or Friday and dumped half of the can in the truck and the other half on the street, would you not go after them?  The telephone service providers are SERIOUSLY falling down on the job!  Yes, they provide us with a means of communication, land or cell or otherwise, but we are essentially paying them to make ourselves prisoners.  We have no freedom, we have no peace!  All we have is harassment, unwanted callers, and no avenue for recourse!  And you can bet your bottom dollar that if you stop paying them, your service will cease.  This is just a watered-down version of what is going on in American politics these days... it's all lies and BS aimed at getting what THEY want with no thought or regard for what We The People want.  Maybe a few well-placed class-action lawsuits are the answer.  Sue Century Tell, AT&T, Verizon and any other telco that refuses to take the measures necessary to stop all the nonsense!  I grew up in the day when there were no answering machines, for crying out loud, and this kind of ridiculousness never went on!

(2)The thing I think has never been asked and/or answered:  I see over and over again the advice to "just ignore them" or "don't answer any call if you don't recognize the number".  I'm not saying that's not good advice, because I practice it myself and I'm no hypocrite, but I think an underlying issue exists that no one is talking about.  So Joe Blow has a landline.  Joe receives numerous unwanted, unknown number, or unknown caller hits to his phone every single day.  Joe, following some sound advice, does not answer these calls.  Many of them he has added to his blocked callers list, but as we all know, new numbers show up every day.  So Joe goes on ignoring them, as his blocked list is full.  The problem here is that Joe has an answering machine or voicemail service.  The advice is that many of these calls are simply trolling for "live" numbers and all they want is a pickup.  Guess what, folks... JOE'S ANSWERING MACHINE OR VOICEMAIL COMPLETES THE CIRCUIT!  He doesn't have to answer the phone himself, because his voicemail does it for him, thus indicating to the creepy caller that the line is indeed live... and apparently making them believe that if they try long enough, they'll actually get Joe on the line.

The moral of this story, gentle readers, is that no matter what you do, you cannot and will not make these idiots leave you alone.  Unless you are willing to go completely off the "leave a message after the tone" grid, four rings is all they need to find out what they want to know.  And the beat goes on...

Please refer to (1) for my ultimate answer to this mind-boggling quagmire of insanity.

Thank you for your time.  You are now returned to your regularly-scheduled programming.  Have an amazing day, gang!  :D

So what exactly does this have to do with the subject of this thread?

Footnote to any previous postings I may have posted: Over the  past several days, numerous times every day, from numbers from mostly three specific area codes, I have been inundated with "private number" and "unknown name" calls.

It seems that these calls are presently targeting senior citizens; this has been confirmed by comparing notes with seniors who participate in the center where I volunteer. The names that have come up are "Hodges Directory", "Navient Solutions Corporation", "Stratos Offshore Services Company", and even "Oracle_Sun Microsystems" -- just to name a few.

A possibly real person's name that has shown up is "Jeff Hodges" who at one time worked for Sun Microsystems, Inc. This Jeff Hodges at one time had a connection to PayPal, and allegedly developed RFC3377 - Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (v3). I tried sending an e-mail to him, and the addresses given for him by Oracle America have all turned out to be useless.

My whole take on this entire scenario is that this is an immense hoax using spoofed numbers, and is an attempt to phish for "live" numbers. I have reported this with names and numbers to the FCC. Ultimately, I think there are people who are mean and hateful, and who think it is fun to harass other people.
