"GRESHAM, Ore. – Scammers have found a sneaky new way to get to you through Facebook.
They take over your friends' identities. Then they start chatting with you as your friend. And soon they're trying to trick you out of your money.
The scam is pretty elaborate. The scammers have to do a lot of work to get to you, but it is paying off for them. Vicki Christiansen sent them $500, and you can be sure there are more victims out there."

"The reason is simple: The most profitable way to perpetrate crime on the Web is to catch average netizens, people like yourself, off guard.
As Facebook use has increased across all age groups and nationalities, cyber criminals have emerged with equal ferocity to take advantage of it. Facebook has a uniquely social quality that makes it particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks; that is, you don’t expect any trouble from your “friends.” When a Facebook friend request is accepted, unless privacy settings are specifically adjusted to restrict access, that person can view all of your personal information, including your dearest friends and associates."

In short, Facebook is NOT an ideal way to make new friends! If you know someone in real life/the non-cyber world that also happens to have a Facebook account ... stick with them, don't except some stranger 'friending' you! Instead be suspicious as more likely than not they will only be out to clean you out! No one out of the blue is ever going to suddenly want to be your friend especially out of the blue like that on FaceBook, they are usually up to no good. Stick with those you can know and trust! - jack| 11 repliesi am currently talking to a woman who says she worked with Unicef. she is very pretty in the pics and says she has five yr. old son and wants ne to send money so she can fly over to be with me should i just bkock her and stop talking to her??? can you buy a pkane ticket and get your money back if its not the right person gettingon the flight???
- not Michael replies to jackYes, you should just block her and stop talking to her.
No, you cannot get a refund if the wrong person used a plane ticket you paid for.
Its a scam. She does not intend to fly to the US to be with you. She does not want a plane ticket. She wants money and she'll lie to get it. That pretty picture isn't her. She is probably a he, not a she.
Stop all contact with this scammer. - jack| 1 replyoh yeah i have pics and address on this one and another one i had talked to before. the one in the above post has a facebook page. should i put them on here?
- not Michael replies to jackNo. We don't need to see fake pictures of your scammer girlfriend.
The pictures are fake. Anybody can have a facebook page that shows anything they want to show and says anything they want to say. My facebook picture is my cat.
I think you don't want real information. You want your girlfriend to be real. You want us to tell you to send her money. That's not gonna happen. None of the regular posters here will tell you to send money to someone you've never met.
Its your money. You can do anything you want with it. But don't come crying here when your girlfriend vanishes with your money. - SrCitizenI can believe how desperate this people are to send money to others they never met and/or don't know, why dont you send me money? I'm an American Senior Citizen 67 yrs old, that lost everything thanks to the economy in our Country, and I'm driving a 23 years old clunker car that's falling apart.
- FraudBuster replies to ClaudiaYou can't fix [***].
- No Way!To SrCitizen, Only in America!
- ghettobillyjust a note. from my extensive internet experience take a close look at the emails these scammers of all types 99 percent of the time never include your name in any of the emails. also never open any attachments unless you are expecting them from some one and never follow or click on any links in the emails or you can get viruses or malware and be vulnerable to identity theft or worse. most of all a good rule to follow is no one in these time is going to give you any money of any type for free or a fee... it just dont happen.. hope this helps someone.. God Bless...
- D Nguyen replies to PaybackI agree, my situation however they deposit the money to my credit card, then tell me get the cash to send money to WU. It is some kind fake dating pretended my girl friend...
- Kellie replies to jackYou have to make connection with people within 100 miles or so, so you can visit whenever you want, to check who they are, to meet...doesn't make any sense, to have boyfriend or girlfriend in other country or continent...sending money for any reason is the stupidest thing, well, there are very stupid things and this is one of them...if you loose money, that's OK, but if you loose self esteem, that's bad...
- jack| 1 replyi havent sent no money. and i think if we post pics and names then other people can be more aware but it dont matter i cut off all communication with her or him or whatever is on the other end. tks for info.
- not Michael replies to jackThere is no way to post pictures on this board. And many of us won't click on a link. So you don't have a way to show those pictures to us.
Congratulations on not letting her/him scam you. - Interesting| 4 repliesFirst of all, not all of Nigeria is bad. Most but not all.
Western Union are the scammers if you ask me.
I have sent plenty of money thru western union and on occasion it gets picked up by someone that says they are my contact person (receiver) and are not.
Regardless of the situation, you never ever get your money back from Western union.
There is a lawsuit against western union just for this purpose.
